7. Yu Malaria (Stagnation Malaria)
[Etiology] Initially caused by Qi stagnation. Over time, it inevitably leads to collateral blood stasis. In severe cases, it may even affect the Yangwei Vessel (one of the eight extraordinary vessels, governing the exterior of the body), all of which can manifest as malaria-like symptoms.
[Symptoms] Alternating chills and fever resembling malaria, occurring at regular intervals. Chest fullness and hypochondriac pain, worsening significantly at night. Fullness in the lower abdomen, loose stools with a sensation of incomplete evacuation. The tongue is purple-dark and moist, or the tongue edges are purple with a rough, white coating.
[Pulse] The left pulse is wiry (Xian) and choppy (Se). A wiry pulse indicates Qi stagnation; a choppy pulse indicates blood coagulation. This signifies collateral blood stasis in the Liver. Liver diseases tend to induce alternating chills and fever.
[Treatment] Initially administer Qinggan Dayu Tang (Clear the Liver and Unblock Stagnation Decoction) to soothe and regulate Qi. Subsequently use Jiajian Xiaochaihu Tang (Modified Minor Bupleurum Decoction) to unblock blood stasis. Once Qi and Blood are harmonized and flowing freely, the chills and fever will naturally resolve. Finally, employ Siwu Jiangfu Tang (Four Substances and Red Covering Decoction) to nourish Blood and moisten the collaterals for convalescence.
8. Tai Malaria (Congenital/First-onset Malaria)
Tai Malaria refers to malaria contracted for the first time by individuals who are young children or in their prime adulthood. It is particularly common in children. Colloquially, it is often referred to as "Kaixing" ("Xing" pronounced like "Hang").
[Etiology] Cases occurring in early spring or winter are mostly due to Wind-Cold. Cases occurring between summer and autumn are mostly due to Summer-Heat and Dampness. These conditions are frequently complicated by Phlegm and Food Retention.
[Symptoms] Chills precede fever, followed by sweating after the fever subsides, with regular intervals of onset. Gastric dullness and frequent vomiting. If caused by Wind-Cold, there is aversion to cold and absence of sweating, affecting the head and body...
