Treats women during the nursing period who suffer from deficiency of the Middle Jiao (Middle Burner), presenting with symptoms of mental restlessness, nausea, and vomiting. This formula stabilizes the Middle Jiao and supplements the healthy Qi.
Sheng Zhuru (Raw Bamboo Shavings) [Bambusae Caulis in Taeniam]
Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum) [Gypsum Fibrosum] - each 2 fen
Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig) [Cinnamomi Ramulus]
Baiwei (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) [Anemarrhenae Rhizoma] - each 1 fen
Gancao (Licorice Root) [Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma] - 7 fen
Grind the above five herbs into fine powder. Mix with jujube flesh to form pills the size of a bullet. Take one pill at a time, administered with warm water. Take three times during the day and twice at night. If there is heat, increase the dosage of Baiwei. If there is mental restlessness and panting, add Baishi (Platycladi Semen) by 1 fen.
Song says: Vomiting accompanied by mental restlessness occurs due to Qi deficiency and excessive Fire during nursing, causing internal disturbance and upward rebellion. Use 2 fen of Shigao and 2 fen of Sheng Zhuru. Use 1 fen of Baiwei and 1 fen of Guizhi, along with 7 fen of Gancao. Form pills with jujube flesh and take with water; the effect will gradually manifest.
Addition and Subtraction Song says: Baiwei has miraculous effects in clearing heat; if heat is present, double the dose, remember this well. Baishi possesses dense and deep Metal Qi, with leaves facing west, returning to its original position. The kernel within Baishi calms the mind; for mental restlessness and panting, add 1 fen to take.
Note by Nan Yuanxi: Blood is generated in the Middle Jiao. Milk is transformed from blood. Although blood originates in the Middle Jiao, it particularly relies on the Qi of the Jueyin and Shaoyin meridians to transform into milk. "Deficiency in nursing" refers to weakness caused by excessive loss of milk during breastfeeding. When the Middle Jiao is deficient and lacks blood to nourish the Heart, vexation arises. When the Heart Spirit is unsettled, chaos ensues. When Yang Qi rises, vomiting occurs; "rebellion" refers to severe vomiting. The reason for using Zhupi Da Wan (Large Pill of Bamboo Peel) is that Sheng Zhuru descends rebellious Qi and stops vomiting; Baiwei clears heat and relieves vexation; Shigao unblocks milk flow and stabilizes mental chaos; heavy use of Gancao stabilizes the Middle Jiao to generate body fluids. Blood cannot circulate without the movement of Yang Qi. It is ingenious to use Guizhi alone to promote the circulation of Qi and Blood to nourish the Heart and unblock milk flow. Thus, vomiting and rebellion cease, and the Middle Jiao becomes tranquil; mental restlessness recedes, and Qi is replenished. It reiterates the original intent of the prescription: "Stabilize the Middle and Benefit Qi." Zhupi Da Wan is truly divine.
For postpartum diarrhea with extreme deficiency, this decoction is the primary treatment.
Baitouweng (Pulsatillae Radix) [Pulsatillae Radix]
Ejiao (Donkey-Hide Gelatin) [Colla Corii Asini]
Gancao (Licorice Root) [Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma] - each 2 liang
Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome) [Coptidis Rhizoma]
Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex) [Phellodendri Cortex]
Qinpi (Fraxini Cortex) [Fraxini Cortex] - each 3 liang
Take the above five herbs. Add seven sheng of water, boil to obtain three sheng. Strain the dregs. Add Ejiao, and simmer gently over low heat until the gelatin melts. Obtain two sheng of liquid. Take one sheng warm. If not cured, take another sheng.
Song says: Baitouweng San is mentioned in the Shanghan Lun songs. Here, 2 liang of Ejiao and 2 liang of Gancao are harmonized. Postpartum diarrhea leads to extreme Yin deficiency. Ejiao nourishes Yin, and Gancao moderates urgency.
Note by Nan Yuanxi: After childbirth, excessive blood loss combined with diarrhea leading to fluid loss undoubtedly results in Yin deficiency. The term "extreme deficiency" here implies a need for substantial tonification. However... [Text cuts off]. The term "deficiency" here refers to Yin deficiency, synonymous with the condition where Yin Qi is about to perish in Shaoyin syndrome. In Shaoyin syndrome, Dachengqi Tang is used urgently to purge and save Yin; similarly, this condition uses Baitouweng Tang, characterized by great bitterness and coldness, to save Yin. This method cannot be understood by practitioners like Xue Lizhai, Zhang Jingyue, and Li Shicai, who prioritize sweet-warm methods and caution against bitter-cold ones. What is particularly ingenious is adding the sweetness of Gancao to combine with the bitterness of the other four herbs, forming the method of "bitter-sweet transforming into Yin." Moreover, prolonged diarrhea depletes essence and marrow, leaving collaterals empty; the moisturizing properties of Ejiao... [Text cuts off]
