Treats conditions of cold qi causing cold limbs and reversal (Jue-Ni).
Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata (Wutou, 2 liang, processed). Poria (Fuling, 4 liang). Asari Radix (Xixin, 1 liang). Pinelliae Rhizoma Preparatum (Banxia, 4 liang).
The above four herbs are ground into powder. Cinnabar (Zhenzhū) is added to color it red. Honey is refined and used to make pills, the size of hemp seeds. Taken before meals, washed down with wine, three pills at a time. Taken twice daily. If there is no effect after one dose, slightly increase the dosage. The treatment is considered effective when symptoms resolve.
Verse: When cold causes reversal, what is the precious cause? Four liang of Banxia and Fuling, one liang of Xixin. Inside, two liang of processed Wutou. Honey pills colored cinnabar red, wondrously effective like spirits.
Yuansi's commentary: Cold qi reaching reversal indicates an excess of yin pathogenic factors. In the formula, Wutou and Xixin are used to warm and disperse the predominant cold; Fuling and Banxia are used to descend and drain... [text cuts off]
Treats abdominal fullness with a wiry (Xuan) and tight (Jin) pulse. A wiry pulse indicates that defensive qi (Wei Qi) does not circulate, resulting in aversion to cold; a tight pulse indicates loss of appetite. When pathogenic factors and righteous qi struggle against each other, it forms Cold Colic (Han Shan).
Cold colic presents as pain around the umbilicus. If it attacks, clear sweat (Bai Jin) flows out, hands and feet become cold, and the pulse is deep and tight; this formula governs such cases. (Yuansi's commentary: Bai Jin refers to sweat that is pale and not salty.)
Aconiti Radix (Wutou, five large pieces, roasted, skin removed, not necessarily chopped).
Take three sheng of water, boil to obtain one sheng, remove the dregs. Add two sheng of honey, decoct until the water vapor is gone, obtaining two sheng. Strong individuals take seven he; weak individuals take five he.
Verse: Deep, tight, and wiry pulse, pain around the umbilicus. Bai Jin (name for sweat that is pale and not salty). Jue Ni (cold limbs). Cold and desolate (aversion to cold throughout the body)... [text cuts off]
Yuansi's commentary: The previous clause and this clause both represent syndromes of internal accumulation of yin-cold. Cold causes reversal, qi causes obstruction; this is long-standing yin pathogenic factors gathering and filling the middle jiao. Yin pathogenic factors... [text cuts off]
It is said that cold qi causing reversal implies pure yin functioning, with yang qi about to perish. The method should be to warm the middle and strengthen yang, greatly breaking the yin pathogenic factors. Without sweet-warm and acrid-hot substances, how can one save even a fraction of the situation?
Treats Cold Colic causing abdominal pain, as well as hypochondriac pain with a feeling of urgency inside. This formula governs these.
Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui, 3 liang). Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Shengjiang, 5 liang). Ovis/Capis Carcass (Yangrou, 1 jin).
The above three ingredients are boiled in eight sheng of water to obtain three sheng. Take seven he warm, three times a day. If cold is excessive, increase Shengjiang to one piece (note: text says "cheng yi pian", likely a textual error or specific measure); if pain is severe with vomiting, add Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi, 2 liang) and Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu, 1 liang). If Shengjiang is added, also add five sheng of water, boil to obtain three sheng and two he for administration.
Addition/Subtraction Verse: If cold is excessive, increase ginger to one jin. For pain and vomiting, consider adding Chenpi and Baizhu. Use one liang of Baizhu and two liang of Chenpi to dispel phlegm, stop vomiting, and tonify the middle.
Yuansi's commentary: In the formula, Danggui moves stagnation in the blood level to relieve pain, and Shengjiang disseminates stagnation in the qi level to relieve pain; this is commonly understood by people. The wonder lies in the mutton's... [text cuts off]
