The syndrome of Kidney Labor (Shen Lao) is characterized by a dark complexion, cold feet, deafness, weakness in the knees, lower back pain, tightness and discomfort in the lower abdomen, and difficulty in urination. It is primarily treated with Shengdi Huang Wan (Eight-Ingredient Rehmannia Pill). This condition arises from insufficiency of the Kidneys, leading to internal generation of cold. As Wang Bing (Wang Taipu) stated: "When the Kidney Qi is deficient, cold moves within the center."
Formula for Shengdi Huang Wan (Eight-Ingredient Rehmannia Pill):
Prepared Rehmanniae Radix (Shu Di Huang) [Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata] (8 liang), Corni Fructus (Yu Rou), Dioscoreae Rhizoma (Shan Yao) [Dioscoreae Oppositae Rhizoma] (each 4 liang), Moutan Cortex (Mu Dan Pi), Alismatis Rhizoma (Ze Xie) [Alisma Orientale Rhizome], Poria (Fu Ling) [Poria Cocos] (each 3 liang), Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata (Zhi Fu Zi) [Aconitum Carmichaelii Lateralis Radix Praeparata], Cinnamomi Cortex (Rou Gui) [Cinnamomum Cassia Bark] (each 1 liang).
Grind the above ingredients into powder, mix with refined honey to form pills the size of tung tree seeds. Take 70–80 pills per dose, swallowed with boiling water on an empty stomach. Adding Schisandrae Fructus (Wu Wei Zi) and Cervi Corium Colla (Lu Rong) [Cervi Cornu Colla] to this formula creates Shibu Wan (Ten-Nourishing Pill). Removing Zhi Fu Zi [Aconitum Carmichaelii Lateralis Radix Praeparata] and adding 2 liang of Wu Wei Zi [Schisandrae Fructus] creates Jiajian Shengdi Huang Wan (Modified Eight-Ingredient Rehmannia Pill).
Shuyu Wan (Dioscoreae Pill): Used to tonify various ailments in men; specific conditions are too numerous to list.
Formula for Shuyu Wan (Dioscoreae Pill):
Dioscoreae Rhizoma (Shu Yu) [Dioscoreae Oppositae Rhizoma], Lycii Fructus (Gou Qi Zi) [Lycium Barbarum Fruit], Dipsaci Radix (Xu Duan) [Dipsacus Asper Root], Poria (Fu Ling) [Poria Cocos], Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix (Niu Xi) [Achyranthes Bidentata Root], Cuscutae Semen (Tu Si Zi) [Cuscutae Chinensis Seed], Morinda Officinalis Radix (Ba Ji) [Morinda Officinalis Root], Eucommiae Cortex (Du Zhong) [Eucommia Ulmoides Bark] (each 1 liang), Cynomorii Herba (Cong Rong) [Cynomorium Songaricum Herb] (2 liang), Schisandrae Fructus (Wu Wei Zi) [Schisandrae Fructus], Corni Fructus (Shan Yu Rou) [Corni Fructus], Cnidii Fructus (She Chuang Zi) [Cnidii Monnieri Fruit] (each 1 liang).
Grind the above into a powder. Mix with wine to take one fangcun bi (a square-inch measure) at a time, three times daily and twice at night. Avoid vinegar and garlic during treatment.
Formula for Treating Kidney Labor with Essence Degeneration and Dark Complexion:
Cynomorii Herba (Cong Rong) [Cynomorium Songaricum Herb] (4 liang), boiled in water until soft, sliced thinly and ground. Use high-quality mutton meat divided into four portions, cooked with five condiments and rice to make porridge. Eat on an empty stomach. (From Xu Shuni's *Ben Shi Fang*. Zheng Guoxiang of the Tang Dynasty stated: When I served as the Military Governor of Nanhai at age seventy-five, the low and damp climate of Guangdong caused internal and external injuries, triggering multiple diseases and causing Yang Qi to decline severely. Medicines containing mineral supplements were ineffective. In the seventh year of Yuanhe, a shipowner from Heling presented this formula. After seven or eight days, its efficacy was evident. Since then, I have taken it regularly with miraculous results. In the second month of the tenth year, upon returning to the capital, I recorded this formula for dissemination. The formula uses Po Gu Zhi (Bulgariae Semen) [Psoraleae Fructus] 10 liang, cleaned and powdered, mixed with 20 liang of peeled walnut kernels pounded into paste. Combine with the aforementioned powder and blend well with refined honey until resembling maltose. Store in a porcelain vessel. Each day, dissolve one spoonful of the medicine in warm wine and take it orally. If one does not drink alcohol, dissolve it in warm water. Long-term use extends life, benefits Qi, brightens the mind and eyes, and strengthens bones and sinews. However, avoid eating rapeseed greens (Yun Tai) and sheep blood. People from foreign lands call this Boguzhi Wan (Psoraleae Pill).)
