3.又说:从春季到夏季发生鼻出血的,病位在太阳经;从秋季到冬季发生鼻出血的,病位在阳明经。

1. The pulse at the Cun Kou (radial artery) is agitated and weak. Agitation indicates Jing syndrome (palpitations due to fright), while weakness indicates Ji syndrome (palpitations due to deficiency).
2. The Master said: If the Chi pulse (distal radial pulse) is floating, and there is yellowish discoloration around the eyes, the epistaxis has not yet stopped. When the yellowish discoloration disappears and the eyes become clear and bright, it can be known that the epistaxis has now ceased.
3. It is also said: Epistaxis occurring from spring to summer is related to the Taiyang channel (Taiyang meridian); epistaxis occurring from autumn to winter is related to the Yangming channel (Yangming meridian).
4. Individuals who frequently suffer from epistaxis should not undergo sweating therapy. If sweating occurs erroneously, it will inevitably lead to sunken arteries on the forehead, tightness of the vessels, fixed staring gaze, inability to move the eyes, and insomnia.
5. A patient with a bloodless complexion and no aversion to cold or fever: if the pulse is deep and wiry, it indicates epistaxis; if the pulse is floating and weak, and vanishes upon heavy pressure, it indicates lower bleeding (hematochezia/hematuria); if accompanied by irritability and cough, hematemesis (vomiting blood) will certainly occur.
6. In cases of hematemesis, if there is rebellious Qi with coughing, a rapid pulse, heat sensation, and inability to lie down, the prognosis is fatal.
7. Patients with a history of alcohol consumption who cough will inevitably develop hematemesis; this is caused by excessive drinking.
8. The Cun Kou pulse is wiry and large. Wiry indicates decline (deficiency), and large indicates hollow (Kou pulse). Decline leads to cold, and hollow leads to deficiency. The interaction of cold and deficiency is named Ge pulse (Leather pulse). In women, this manifests as spontaneous abortion and continuous uterine bleeding (Lou Xia); in men, it manifests as loss of blood (Wang Xue).
9. Those who have lost blood should not be treated with exterior-releasing methods. Sweating will result in chills and tremors.
10. A patient presenting with chest fullness, withered lips, blue-purple tongue, dry mouth desiring to rinse with water but not swallow, without aversion to cold or fever, and with a pulse that is slightly large, slow in arrival, and delayed: although the abdomen is not distended, the patient feels fullness. This indicates the presence of Blood Stasis (Yu Xue).
11. A patient presents with symptoms resembling heat, irritability, fullness, dry mouth, and thirst, yet the pulse does not show heat signs. This is Yin depression (heat hidden within the Yin), indicating Blood Stasis, which should be treated with purgation.
12. For conditions caused by Fire Evil leading to palpitations and fright, Guizhi Qu Shaoyao Jia Shujie Muli Longgu Jiuni Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction minus Peony plus Clam Shell, Oyster Shell, Dragon Bone, for Rescue from Reversal) is the primary formula.
Guizhi Jiuni Tang Formula:
Guizhi (Ramulus Cinnamomi, 3 liang, bark removed), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, 2 liang, honey-fried), Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens, 3 liang), Muli (Concha Ostreae, 5 liang, calcined), Longgu (Os Draconis, 4 liang), Dazao (Fructus Jujubae, 12 pieces), Shujie (Herba Dictamni Cortex, 3 liang, washed to remove fishy odor).
Crush these seven ingredients into coarse powder. Add 12 sheng of water, first boil Shujie until reduced by 2 sheng, then add the remaining herbs. Boil until 3 sheng remain, strain, and take 1 sheng warm.
13. For palpitations below the heart, Banxia Mahuang Wan (Pinellia and Ephedra Pill) is the primary formula.
Banxia Mahuang Wan Formula:
Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae Preparata) and Mahuang (Herba Ephedrae) in equal parts.
Grind these two ingredients into fine powder, mix with refined honey to form pills the size of small beans. Take three pills per dose with water, three times daily.
14. For incessant hematemesis, Baiye Tang (Cacumen Platycladi Decoction) is the primary formula.
Baiye Tang Formula:
Baiye (Cacumen Platycladi), Ganjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Secati) in equal parts (3 liang each), Ai (Folium Artemisiae Argyi, 3 bundles).
Add 5 sheng of water and 1 sheng of Ma Tong Zhi (Jumentum Feces Juice) to the three ingredients. Boil together to obtain 1 sheng of decoction. Divide into two doses and take warm.
15. For lower bleeding where stool precedes blood, this is distant bleeding (Yuan Xue), treated primarily with Huangtu Tang (Yellow Earth Decoction).
Huangtu Tang Formula (Also treats hematemesis and epistaxis):
Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae), Dihuang (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata), Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae), Fuzi (Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata, processed), Ejiao (Colla Corii Asini), Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae) in equal parts (3 liang each), Zaotuhuangtu (Caulis Cineris, 0.5 jin).
Add 8 sheng of water to these seven ingredients. Boil to obtain 3 sheng of decoction. Divide into two doses and take warm.
16. For lower bleeding where blood precedes stool, this is proximate bleeding (Jin Xue), treated primarily with Chixiaodou Danggui San (Small Red Bean and Angelica Powder). (Formula found in the Huo Huo disease chapter.)
17. For insufficiency of Heart Qi leading to hematemesis and epistaxis, Xiexin Tang (Drain the Epigastrium Decoction) is the primary formula.
Xiexin Tang Formula (Also treats Huo Luan [Cholera-like syndrome]):
Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei, 2 liang), Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis), Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae) in equal parts (1 liang each).
Add 3 sheng of water to these three ingredients. Boil to obtain 1 sheng of decoction. Take in one single dose.
