Wang Zuan needled the Jiaoshu (Crossing Shu) points, and the evil spirits immediately vanished. By selecting Ganshu (Liver Shu, BL18) and Mingmen (Gate of Life, GV4), he enabled the blind to see the tip of an autumn hair; by stimulating Shaoyang (Lesser Yang) and Jiaobie (Connecting Vessel), he allowed the deaf to hear the sound of summer mosquitoes. This cites the immediate efficacy of the ancestors' acupuncture techniques to encourage students to practice with sincerity.
Alas! The distance from the sages grows greater, and this Dao gradually declines. Some, failing to grasp its essence, abandon their studies; others, lacking ability, violate contraindications. I am dull and shallow in wisdom, finding it difficult to align with profound words. The supreme Dao is deep and abstruse; how many can truly attain it? I casually record these words, not daring to show them to the enlightened and accomplished, hoping perhaps to open the minds of beginners.
(From *Zhenjiu Daquan*)
Whenever one wishes to perform acupuncture, one must carefully examine the acupoints and understand the principles of tonification, reduction, following, and opposing. The chest and back, left and right, are not identical; respiration, Yin-Yang, and gender distinctions apply. For Qi stagnation piercing both breasts, seek Taiyuan (LU9); if there is no response, reduce Lieque (LU7). Lieque treats headache and lateral or frontal headaches; heavily reducing Taiyuan yields effective results without exception.
For deafness and Qi distension, needle Tinghui (GB2); reducing Yingxiang (LI20) yields miraculous effects. Who knows that Tiantu (CV22) treats throat wind? For deficiency-type wheezing, seek Zusanli (ST36). When pain in the hand connects to the shoulder and spine, making it unbearable, needle Hegu (LI4) while also using Taichong (LR3).
For disharmony in both hands, use Quchi (LI11); when needling Hegu (LI4), be meticulous. For heart pain and hand tremors, locate Shaohai (HT3); to eradicate the root, seek Yinshi (SP15).
If deafness in both ears is caused by cold damage, Jinmen (BL63) and Tinghui (GB2) act swiftly like the wind. For five types of elbow pain, seek Chize (LU5); after needling Taiyuan (LU9), success is achieved.
For issues above and below the extremities, needle Zusanli (ST36); for food accumulation and Qi masses, treat based on this. Jiutui (CV15) can treat five types of epilepsy; if Yongquan (KI1) is needled, death is avoided. For gastric accumulation, puncture Xuanji (CV15); Zusanli (ST36) has great merit, though few know it. Yinlingquan (SP9) treats chest and epigastric fullness; upon needling Chengshan (BL57), appetite returns.
If Dazhu (BL11) connects with Changqiang (GV1), seek treatment; for Xiao Chang Qi pain (small intestine Qi pain), needle immediately. Weizhong (BL40) specifically treats lower back pain; for swelling in feet and knees, seek Zhiyin (BL67).
For Qi-stagnation lower back pain preventing standing, Henggu (KI11) and Dadu (SP13) are suitable for emergency relief. Qihai (CV6) specifically treats the five stranguries; additionally, needle Zusanli (ST36) coordinated with respiration.
Qimen (LR14) primarily treats cold damage patients; even after six days, if the meridian has passed but sweating has not occurred, needle between Rupgen (ST18) and the two ribs; it also treats difficult childbirth in women.
Cicada-like ringing in the ears and a feeling of waist breaking: Xia Sanli (below knee, likely referring to Zusanli ST36 or similar) is clearly present. If one can apply tonification and reduction at Wuhui (CV13), do not easily reveal this to others. When Jingming (BL1) fails to treat eye diseases, how can Hegu (LI4) and Guangming (GB37) be omitted?
Renzhong (GV26) has the highest efficacy for treating epilepsy; the Thirteen Ghost Points need not be spared. For edema, combine Shuifen (CV9) and Qihai (CV6); within the skin, following the needle, Qi dissipates naturally. For cold coughs, first tonify Hegu (LI4); then reduce Sanyinjiao (SP6). For toothache, lower back pain, and pharyngeal obstruction, Erjian (LI2) and Yangxi (LI5) cannot escape the disease. Furthermore, Sanjian (LI3) and Shenshu (BL23) are excellent for removing floating wind and labor in the shoulder and back. If needling Jianjing (GB21), one must use Zusanli (ST36); otherwise, Qi remains unregulated. Most notably, Yanglingquan (GB34): for knee pain, use needle moxibustion. Weizhong (BL40) treats lower back pain and leg cramps; obtaining blood from the meridian regulates it naturally. For foot pain and knee swelling, needle Zusanli (ST36); Xuanzhong (GB39), Er Ling (likely Yinlingquan SP9 and Yanglingquan GB34), and Sanyinjiao (SP6); additionally, guide Qi through Taichong (LR3), and numbness in fingertips will lighten. For muscle spasms and dizziness, needle Yufu (likely referring to a point near the heart or specific local point, contextually ambiguous but often associated with local relief); Chengshan (BL57) and Kunlun (BL60) eliminate symptoms immediately. For abdominal pain, Gongsun (SP4) is excellent; Neiguan (PC6) corresponds and ensures cure. For cold wind and cold bi syndrome difficult to heal, needle and moxa Huantiao (GB30) in the waist and hip. Fenge (GV16) and Fengchi (GB20), once located, eliminate hundred diseases of cold damage instantly. On the second day of Yangming stage, seek Fengfu (GV16); for vomiting, Shangwan (CV13) is required. For women's heart pain, Xinshu (BL15); for men's Pi accumulation (masses), Zusanli (ST36) is high priority. For involuntary urination, Guanyuan (CV4) is good; for constipation, burn Dazhun (LR14). For hip and leg pain, reduce Zusanli (ST36); for Fu Liu (KI7) Qi stagnation affecting the waist.
Fengfu (GV16) has always been the most difficult to needle; one must exert effort to measure depth. If Bladder Qi has not dispersed, seek Zusanli (ST36) again. If it is seven types of hernia with lower abdominal pain, needle Zhaohai (KI6), Yinjiao (RN7), and Ququan (LR8). If still ineffective, seek Qihai (CV6); combining with Guanyuan (CV4) and reducing yields divine efficacy.
Small intestine Qi pulling pain connecting to the navel: quickly reduce Yinjiao (RN7) without delay; after a long time, take Qi from Yongquan (KI1); the mystery here is known by few. For pediatric rectal prolapse lasting long, first moxa Baihui (GV20), then Jiutui (CV15). For chronic cold damage causing shoulder and back pain, simply needle Zhongzhu (TE3) to obtain appropriateness.
Shoulder pain connecting to the navel without cessation: seek Zusanli (ST36) in the hand. Upon needling, if numbness and heaviness occur, one must reduce; when Deqi arrives, do not retain the needle. Lower back connecting to hip pain urgent and severe: attack the blockage at Zusanli (ST36). Needle with one reduction and three tonifications; if Qi attacks upward causing choking, continue; if choking does not stop, moxa Qihai (CV6); definite reduction leads to immediate recovery.
Tonification turns the needle high from Mao South; reduction goes from Mao North, do not decline labor. Force the needle to expel Qi requiring inhalation; for tonification, follow exhalation for natural regulation. Pinch the needle left and right seeking Zi Wu (midnight and noon cycles); withdraw the needle to move Qi continuously. Clearly state tonification and reduction in needling; further investigate the root and branch. For most urgent throat conditions, first use Baihui (GV20); Taichong (LR3), Zhaohai (KI6), and Yinjiao (RN7). Students should study diligently; Xi Hong's healing reputation is the highest.
