First, perform the Xun method (circular rubbing along the meridian) five or seven times. If the needle feels immobile, like the tail of a dragon, indicating that Qi and Blood are neither deficient nor excess, one may use the Sheng Yang method (raising Yang) three times and the Sheng Yin method (raising Yin) three times, or use the Da Pan method (large plate manipulation) twice, downward She Ti (pulling up while pressing down) several times, perform Shen Ti (extending and lifting) three times, She Ti four times in each of the four directions, Xia Shun Yao (downward clockwise shaking) three times, Heng Yao (lateral shaking) four times, continuous downward She Ti seven times, Tan Fa (plucking/flicking) seven times, Xie Fa (draining method) three or four times, then withdraw the needle. If needling is performed at Wu hour (11:00-13:00), withdraw the needle at Wei hour (13:00-15:00). If bleeding does not stop, administer An Wei San (Stomach-Anning Powder) for three doses. If shaking causes Qi rebellion, shake the needle to follow the upward or downward flow of Qi, reverse the shaking direction, shake outward laterally, perform more She Ti and Gua Fa (scraping), counteracting Yin and Yang, and can use the circular downward method: Shun Yao three times, Heng Yao four times, continuous downward She Ti to sink Qi, Tan Fa seven times, Xie Fa three or four times, Xie Fa seven times. If needling is performed at Wu hour, withdraw the needle at Wei hour. If bleeding does not stop, treat with An Wei San. Unless one possesses the miraculous skills of an immortal, one must use frequent scraping and rubbing to harmonize evenly.
Question: What is the Xu (deficiency) Xun method? If Hou Qi (waiting for Qi arrival) fails, after performing Xun seven times and then another seven times, if Qi still does not arrive, what is the reason?
Answer: If repeating Xun seven times again results in no Qi arrival, the disease is incurable and will lead to death.
Question: For Shi (excess) patterns, the Xun method is not used. What constitutes a Shi pattern?
Answer: After three applications of Bu (tonifying) methods, the needle feels tight; this is a Shi pattern. If it becomes tight after just one application of Bu, it indicates Evil Qi. Instruct the patient to close their mouth and hold their breath. The practitioner should then search with the golden needle left and right ten times, rub/twist several times. If the sensation is loose, one can guide Qi upward or downward.
Question: What is Xu Ti (deficient lifting)? What do He Ti (combined lifting) and Bu Ti (not lifting) mean?
Answer: Perform Bu three times, then Xun three times. Only when Qi and Blood are neither deficient nor excess can Shen Ti (extending and lifting) be performed.
Question: When Qi and Blood are balanced, what is Ban Ti (half lifting)?
Answer: Perform Bu seven times, then Xun ten times. Only when the patient's Qi and Blood are deficient can Ban Ti be used, operating gently to avoid damaging Ying Wei (Nutritive and Defensive Qi). If Jin Zhen (golden needle) Shen Ti is used excessively, it may cause the patient to feel dizzy; needling should be avoided as it damages Ying Wei.
Question: Why does Shi Ti (excess lifting) fail to move, and why does Qi not flow up or down?
Answer: Evil Qi flows into the meridians, causing the skin and flesh to become rough and stagnant, leading to pain.
Question: Since Evil Qi is present, how can it be expelled?
Answer: Use Sou Fa (searching method): search upward and downward dozens of times, slightly drain three parts. Once Evil Qi is expelled, Zheng Qi (Upright Qi) returns to the meridians. Use Qi upward, Qi downward
