Thirty-six Acupoints of the Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian on Both Sides
Zhiyin (BL67), two acupoints. Element: Metal. Located on the lateral side of the little toe, at a distance from the corner of the nail like the width of a leek leaf. Needle depth: 2 fen; Moxibustion: 3 moxa cones.
Tonggu (BL65), two acupoints. Element: Water. Located in the depression anterior to the proximal interphalangeal joint on the lateral side of the little toe. Moxibustion: 3 moxa cones; Needle depth: 2 fen.
Shugu (BL64), two acupoints. Element: Wood. Located in the depression posterior to the proximal interphalangeal joint on the lateral side of the little toe. Moxibustion: 3 moxa cones; Needle depth: 3 fen.
Jinggu (BL64), two acupoints. Located in the depression between the red and white flesh under the large bone on the lateral side of the foot, palpable upon pressure. Needle depth: 3 fen; Moxibustion: 7 moxa cones. *Mingtang* notes 5 moxa cones; *Suwen* notes 3 moxa cones.
Shenmai (BL62), two acupoints. Source point of the Yang Qiao Mai (Yang Heel Vessel). Located in the depression below the lateral malleolus, at the boundary of red and white flesh accommodating the size of a fingernail. Needle depth: 3 fen. *Qianjin Fang* states: Shenmai is located in the depression below the lateral malleolus. *Mingtang Shangjing* states: The two Yang Qiao acupoints are located in the depression one cun anterior to the lateral malleolus. Needle depth: 3 fen. Note in *Suwen · Qixue Lun*: The Yang Qiao acupoint is named Shenmai. The source of the Yang Qiao vessel is in the depression below the lateral malleolus. New Correction states: According to the note in *Ci Yaotong Pian*, it is located 5 fen below the lateral malleolus; according to the note in *Miao Ci Lun*, it is half a cun below the lateral malleolus, accommodating the size of a fingernail.
*Mingtang Shangjing* lists a Yang Qiao acupoint, but *Tongren* does not record this acupoint, listing only Shenmai (two acupoints) as the source of the Yang Qiao vessel, located in the depression below the lateral malleolus, which coincides with the position of the Yang Qiao acupoint, though the reason remains unknown. I have examined the note in *Suwen · Qixue Lun* regarding Yin and Yang Qiao acupoints: "The Yang Qiao acupoint is named Shenmai. The source of the Yang Qiao vessel is in the depression below the lateral malleolus." This aligns with the Shenmai acupoint in *Tongren*. Thus, Yang Qiao is Shenmai. Therefore, the Yang Qiao from *Mingtang* is appended after Shenmai.
Jinmen (BL63), two acupoints. Also known as Guanliang. Located below the lateral malleolus. Moxibustion: 3 moxa cones, cone size like a wheat grain. Needle depth: 1 fen.
Pucan (BL60), two acupoints. Also known as Anye. Located in the depression under the calcaneus, found by arching the foot. Needle depth: 2 fen; Moxibustion: 7 moxa cones. *Mingtang* states: 3 moxa cones.
Kunlun (BL60), two acupoints. Element: Fire. Located in the depression above the calcaneus behind the lateral malleolus. (*Suwen* note: Fine pulse beats against the finger.) Moxibustion: 3 moxa cones; Needle depth: 3 fen. *Mingtang* states: Upper Kunlun needle depth 5 fen; Lower Kunlun is located one cun below the lateral malleolus under the large tendon.
*Mingtang* records both Upper Kunlun and Lower Kunlun, while *Tongren* only records Kunlun without mentioning Lower Kunlun. Is *Tongren* incomplete? Or are the names different? It is uncertain. However, *Shangjing* states: Inner Kunlun is one cun below the lateral malleolus; *Xiajing* states: Inner Kunlun is five fen posterior to the medial malleolus. It is unclear which is correct. I believe that since it is called "Inner" Kunlun, it should be posterior to the medial malleolus. The acupoint in *Xiajing* is more widely accepted because Upper Kunlun is located at the lateral malleolus.
Fuyang (BL59), two acupoints. Located three cun above the lateral malleolus. (Same as Foot-Taiyang meridian points; *Qianjin Fang* agrees.) Yang Qiao and Taiyang are anterior, Shaoyang is posterior, in the space between tendons and bones where the Yang Qiao vessel resides. Moxibustion: 3 moxa cones; Needle depth: 5 fen; Retain needle for seven breaths. *Mingtang Xiajing* states: Fuyang is two cun above the lateral malleolus. (Perhaps "two characters" should be read as "three".) In the depression between the posterior tendons and bones. Moxibustion: 5 moxa cones. Note in *Suwen · Qifu Lun* regarding Yin and Yang Qiao: Yang Qiao refers to the Fuyang acupoint. Located three cun above the lateral malleolus, anterior to Taiyang and posterior to Shaoyang, in the space between tendons and bones where the Yang Qiao vessel resides.
According to the note in *Suwen · Qifu Lun* regarding the Yang Qiao acupoint: It refers to the Fuyang acupoint, located three cun above the lateral malleolus. I speculated that Yang Qiao is Fuyang. However, upon examining the note in *Qixue Lun* regarding the four Yin and Yang Qiao acupoints: "The Yang Qiao acupoint is named Shenmai. The source of the Yang Qiao vessel [is here]." This implies that Yang Qiao is Shenmai, not Fuyang. Thus, *Mingtang Xiajing* has Fuyang two cun above the lateral malleolus, and *Shangjing* has Yang Qiao one cun anterior to the lateral malleolus. Since one cun and two cun differ, Fuyang and Yang Qiao are distinct acupoints. It is merely unclear why the notes in *Suwen* contradict each other.
Feiyang (BL58), two acupoints. Also known as Jueyang. Located nine cun above the lateral malleolus. (*Mingtang* and *Qianjin Fang* both state seven cun.) Needle depth: 3 fen; Moxibustion: 3 moxa cones. *Mingtang* states:
Chengshan (BL57), two acupoints. Also known as Yufu, Ruzhu, or Shanggashan. Located in the depression between the muscle bellies below the gastrocnemius. Moxibustion: 1 moxa cone; Needle depth: 7 fen. *Mingtang* states: 8 fen. Discharge immediately upon obtaining Deqi, and remove the needle quickly. Moxibustion is inferior to needling; maximum 7x7 moxa cones. *Xiajing* states: 5 moxa cones. (One version says: below the muscle belly of the calf).
Chengjin (BL56), two acupoints. Also known as Chuanchang or Zhichang. Located in the depression in the center of the gastrocnemius. Moxibustion: 3 moxa cones; Needling is prohibited. *Mingtang* states: In the depression in the center of the gastrocnemius, seven cun up from the heel along the posterior leg. Needle depth: 3 fen. *Qianjin Fang* states: In the center of the gastrocnemius, seven cun up from the heel; do not needle.
Both *Tongren* and *Qianjin Fang* state that needling is prohibited, whereas *Mingtang* suggests a needle depth of 3 fen, which is questionable. It is advisable not to needle.
Heyang (BL55), two acupoints. Located two cun below the center of the popliteal crease. (*Qianjin Fang* states three cun.) Needle depth: 6 fen; Moxibustion: 5 moxa cones.
Weizhong (BL40), two acupoints. Element: Earth. Located in the center of the popliteal fossa, in the artery at the crease. Now appended here. Weizhong is the Blood Xi-Cleft point. For heat diseases with no sweat, hot feet with jue-ni (cold extremities), and inability to flex or extend the knee, draining blood from this meridian leads to immediate recovery. *Mingtang* states: Zhen Quan said, it is located in the depression between two tendons and two bones inside the popliteal fossa. Have the patient lie prone with abdomen flat to locate it. Needle depth: 8 fen; Retain needle for three breaths; Discharge method over five inhalations. *Jia Yi Jing* states: Needle depth 5 fen; Retain needle for seven breaths; Moxibustion 3 moxa cones. *Suwen* note: In the flexure behind the knee, in the center of the popliteal crease. Also, *Gukong Lun* states: Behind the separation of the knee, in the fold of the bent leg, accessed from the dorsal side.
Weiyang (BL39), two acupoints. The lower auxiliary shu point of the Sanjiao. Located posterior to the Foot-Taiyang meridian, emerging from the popliteal fossa, between the two tendons on the lateral side. Locate by flexing and extending the leg. Six cun below Fucheng. Moxibustion: 3 moxa cones; Needle depth: 7 fen. *Suwen* note: Between the two tendons on the lateral side of the popliteal fossa. *Qianjin Fang* states: Anterior to Foot-Taiyang and posterior to Shaoyang.
Fuxi (BL38), two acupoints. Located one cun above Weiyang, found by extending the knee. Moxibustion: 3 moxa cones; Needle depth: 5 fen.
Yinmen (BL37), two acupoints. Located six cun below the thigh muscle belly. Needle depth: 7 fen.
Fucheng (BL36), two acupoints. Also known as Rouxi, Yinguan, or Pibu. Located in the central crease where the gluteal region meets the posterior thigh. *Mingtang Xiajing* states: Moxibustion 3 moxa cones. *Qianjin Fang* states: In the central crease below the gluteal region and posterior thigh. (One version says: in the horizontal crease below the gluteal region.)
The above acupoints are compiled according to the sequence in *Tongren*. Acupoints recorded in *Mingtang Shangjing* and *Xiajing* but not in *Tongren* are also appended. Those acupoints that exist without specific names, numbering dozens, are not included. One should follow the descriptions in the respective meridians for needling and moxibustion, rather than refraining from treatment simply because an acupoint name is missing in this text. Bian Que’s thirteen acupoints for moxibustion to dispel ghostly pathogens are identical to those in *Tongren* and *Mingtang*, but their names differ, so they are not included. The acupoints in Xu Xi’s *Zhenjing* differ from those in other classics, and their names are also different, such as Xinglong acupoint. These are also not appended, to avoid letting one person’s private naming confuse the traditional acupoints of the classics and mislead later learners.
