Treats pain between bones caused by sprains and dislocations, as well as conditions involving cold-dampness where the patient fears acupuncture. Use Chenxiang (Aquilaria Lignum), Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix), Ruxiang (Olibanum), Yincheng (Artemisiae Scopariae Herba), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma), Chuanshanjia (Manis Squama) each 3 qian, Shexiang (Musk) a small amount, and Aiyè (Artemisiae Argyi Folium) 2 liang. Using half a chi of soft cotton paper, first lay down a layer of mugwort fluff, then sprinkle the powdered herbs on top. Roll it extremely tightly and store for use. Press against the painful acupoint and mark it with a pen. Cover the acupoint with six or seven layers of paper externally. Take the rolled mugwort-herb bundle and ignite it using the true fire of the sun (a convex lens can be used). When it glows red, press it onto the acupoint. Leave it there for a considerable time, then remove, trim off the ash, burn again, and re-press. Repeat nine times for recovery. For every application of fire, recite the spell once. Hold the burning tip in hand and chant: "Generals of Thunder, Star Lord of Fire Virtue, may the medicine achieve miraculous efficacy, obtaining the spirits of the Three Realms and Six Fu-organs; the needle hides fierce flames, refined into immortality, entering the gate of nine transformations, eliminating pain and illness, sweeping away evil influences. I command by the order of the Southern Dipper Six Stars and Supreme Venerable Lord, swiftly as law dictates." After chanting, immediately apply the Thunder-Fire Needle to the acupoint for moxibustion. Maintain utmost sincerity and piety; do not let women, chickens, or dogs see it.
Formula: Airon (Mugwort Fluff) 2 liang, Taoshupi (Peach Bark), Ruxiang (Olibanum), Moyao (Myrrha), Liuhuang (Sulfur), Xionghuang (Realgar), Chuanshanjia (Manis Squama), Chuanwu (Aconiti Radix), Caowu (Aconiti Kusnezoffii Radix) each 1 qian, Shexiang (Musk) 3 fen.
Grind the above medicines into powder. Layer one sheet of soft cotton paper and one layer of powder, rolling tightly, or tie securely with thread. During moxibustion, place red cloth under the painful area. Ignite this needle on fire and apply moxibustion, similar to the Thunder-Fire Needle method.
Bencao states: Mugwort tastes bitter, has a slightly warm nature, belongs to yang within yin, is non-toxic, and treats all diseases via moxibustion. Collect on the third day of the third lunar month and the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, dry in the sun; aged mugwort is superior. It repels evil and kills ghosts. Furthermore, the method of collecting mugwort is on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, when moxibustion is effective. To prepare mugwort, it must first be dried properly, pounded finely in a stone mortar, sifted to remove dust and debris, with pure white material being the best grade. It must be baked until thoroughly dry so that moxibustion generates strong heat and ignites easily; if moist, it is ineffective. Tujing records: Old texts do not specify the origin, only stating it grows in fields; now it is found everywhere, but the variety from Qizhou has dense leaves and tall stems, possessing the strongest aroma and is particularly excellent for use. Zhu Danxi said: Mugwort is extremely hot in nature; when used in fire moxibustion, its action moves upward; when taken as medicine orally, its action moves downward.
