Tianxing Chiyen (Epidemic Red Eye) refers to toxic vapors circulating in heaven and earth that can be transmitted to humans; if one person suffers from eye disease, it spreads to the whole family, infecting everyone regardless of age. This is called Tianxing Chiyen. The eyes are swollen, painful, gritty, and difficult to open. Some recover within five days. This is a manifestation of the prevailing seasonal qi, and the illness will stabilize. Treatment method: For this condition, washing with water is strictly prohibited. Instead, use urine from an uncircumcised boy to decoct Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), leave it exposed overnight, warm it, and wash the eyes. Wash five times a day to resolve the malignant toxic qi. Additionally, mix Huxuan Erlian (a specific herbal preparation name, kept as is), Fan Xionghuang (Alumen and Realgar) into a fine powder, blend with ginger juice, and instill into the eyes to clear out malignant tears; the pain will stop immediately. Alternatively, take San (Powder) mixed with wine; two or three doses are harmless. This condition is merely an infection by climatic miasma and toxic qi. Although swelling and pain are severe, it ultimately does not damage the Heijing (Black Pupil/Cornea) and Tongren (Pupil).
Question: Why does one person's eye disease spread to the entire family? Answer: Due to the circulation of seasonal weather and the mutual transmission of miasma and toxic qi. Treatment should focus on resolving toxicity, cooling blood, and clearing heat. For severe pain, administer Xigan San (Liver-Washing Powder) and Qibao Xixin San (Seven-Treasure Heart-Washing Powder). For eye drops, use Qingliang San (Cooling Clarity Powder) added with detoxifying herbs. However, this condition causes no internal organ damage. Even in extreme cases, it heals spontaneously without treatment after fourteen days. One must absolutely avoid washing away the blood.
Xigan San (Liver-Washing Powder): Treats sudden onset of redness and swelling, and frequent eye pain associated with Tianxing Chiyen. Suitable for oral administration.
Ingredients: Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma).
Preparation: Grind the above ingredients (one tael each) into powder. Take two or three qian after meals, mixed with hot water.
Qibao Xixin San (Seven-Treasure Heart-Washing Powder): See the section on "Da Chi Mai" (Large Red Veins) for the formula.
Sheng Yi after Major Illness (Neovascularization/Pannus formation following severe inflammation): This shares similarities with Tianxing Chiyen, but why treat them as separate conditions? Tianxing Chiyen resolves within one pentad or seven days; although symptoms may be similar, there is no risk of pannus formation. In cases of major illness, the onset is abrupt with severe swelling, pain, grittiness, chills, fever, restlessness, photophobia, tearing like broth, runny nose, and eyes swollen like peaches. The patient groans day and night, loses appetite, and if not healed within fourteen days, a pannus resembling yellow purulent scabs forms on the Fenglun (Wind Wheel/Cornea), causing radiating headache. Treatment should use Huxuan Erlian, prepared as before with ginger juice for instillation. Fumigate and wash with Ku Tao Ye (Bitter Peach Leaf), Ce Bai Ye (Platycladi Cacumen), Ju Ye (Chrysanthemi Folium), and Liu Ye (Salicis Folium). Internally, administer Sishun San (Four-Obstacles-Passed Powder), Bazheng San (Eight-Righteousnesses Powder), or Daochi San (Guide Out Redness Powder). Although curable, the redness and blurred vision may persist for three months before full recovery. Neglecting proper care will inevitably lead to blindness. Question: Why does white pannus form after Tianxing Chiyen? Answer: Pathogenic factors severely damage the meridians. Severe external pathogens injure the Liver; when the Liver is injured, pannus forms. Treatment should use Sishun San and Xixin Tang (Asari Decoction). For eye drops, use Xiongdan Gao (Bear Bile Ointment); for thick pannus, use Jiuyi Dan (Nine-to-One Powder).
Sishun Tang (Four-Obstacles-Passed Decoction): Treats heat in the meridians and pannus formation after major illness. Suitable for oral administration.
Ingredients: Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Chishaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra).
Preparation: Equal parts. Take four or five qian per dose, decocted in water, taken after meals.
Xixin Tang (Asari Decoction): Treats wind-pathogen injuring the Liver, leading to eye pannus.
Ingredients: Chongweizi (Leonuri Fructus), Heishen (Polygonati Odorati Rhizoma - note: likely referring to a specific variety or typo for another herb, kept as transliteration/source term), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Cheqianzi (Plantaginis Semen), Mutong (Akebiae Caulis), Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma).
Preparation: Equal parts. Decoct in water, taken after meals.
