Treats the syndrome of simultaneous involvement of Taiyang (Greater Yang) and Shaoyang (Lesser Yang), characterized by spontaneous diarrhea. This formula is indicated.
Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, 3 liang) Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, processed with honey, 2 liang) Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix, 2 liang) Dazao (Jujubae Fructus, 12 pieces).
Take the above four herbs, add one dou of water, decoct to obtain three sheng. Remove the dregs. Take one sheng warm, twice during the day and once at night.
Treats the syndrome of simultaneous involvement of Taiyang and Shaoyang, characterized by vomiting without diarrhea.
Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, 3 liang) Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, processed with honey, 2 liang) Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix, 2 liang) Banxia (Pinelliae Tuber, half sheng) Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, 3 liang) Dazao (Jujubae Fructus, 12 pieces).
Take the above six herbs, add one dou of water, decoct to obtain three sheng. Remove the dregs. Take one sheng warm, twice during the day and once at night.
The song states: Twelve Jujube fruits maintain the established principle; two liang each of Paeonia and Glycyrrhiza, three liang of Scutellaria. When utilizing this base formula for cases with added vomiting, add three liang of Zingiber and half a sheng of Pinellia.
Commentary by Wei: Zhang Zhongjing generally does not use Paeonia in cases of diarrhea. Only in this formula is it used provisionally to drain heat sinking into the interior. This is not a fixed rule.
Zhanglingshao stated: This treats simultaneous involvement of Taiyang and Shaoyang presenting with diarrhea and vomiting. "Simultaneous involvement" implies mutual coordination, unlike "concurrent involvement" where pathogens merge into one aspect. Taiyang governs opening, while Shaoyang governs the pivot. If Qi of Taiyang cannot reach the pivot to emerge outward, it instead sinks inward following the pivot, resulting in diarrhea. Huangqin Tang clears heat sinking into the interior and directs Taiyang Qi outward. In cases of vomiting, the pivot of Shaoyang desires to ascend via the opening function of Taiyang. Therefore, Pinellia and Zingiber are added to disperse and direct rebellious Qi, assisting the opening function of Taiyang.
Treats Cold Damage syndrome where there is heat in the chest, pathogenic factors in the stomach, abdominal pain, and a desire to vomit. This formula is indicated.
Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma, 3 liang) Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, processed with honey, 2 liang) Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma, 3 liang) Renshen (Ginseng Radix, 2 liang) Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus, 3 liang) Banxia (Pinelliae Tuber, half sheng) Dazao (Jujubae Fructus, 12 pieces).
Take the above seven herbs, add one dou of water, decoct to obtain five sheng. Remove the dregs. Take one sheng warm, three times during the day and twice at night.
The song states: Abdominal pain and vomiting rely on the pivot mechanism. (Shaoyang serves as the pivot.) Two liang each of Ginseng and Glycyrrhiza, half a sheng of Pinellia. Coptis, Cinnamon Twig, and Dried Ginger are each three liang; twelve Jujube fruits offer layered benefits. (Another version records Glycyrrhiza as three liang.)
Wang Jin-san stated: This is a modified form of Xiao Chaihu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction), using Cinnamon Twig to replace Bupleuri Radix, Coptis to replace Scutellariae Radix, and Dried Ginger to replace Fresh Ginger. The causes of heat in the chest, vomiting, and abdominal pain are entirely due to pathogenic factors in the stomach obstructing the mechanism of ascending and descending of Yin and Yang. Therefore, Ginseng, Jujube, Dried Ginger, Pinellia, and Glycyrrhiza are used specifically to harmonize Stomach Qi. After entering the stomach, they rely on the distribution of Stomach Qi to facilitate communication between Yin and Yang. Subsequently, Cinnamon Twig is used to disseminate Taiyang Qi, carrying Coptis to clear heat from the Upper Jiao Yang aspect, preventing it from sinking deeper into Taiyin, which would otherwise aggravate deficiency-cold abdominal pain.
