According to *Yu Heng* (Jade Balance): In the southeast, where the terrain is low and damp, Bian stone therapy (Bian Shi Fa, a surgical technique using stone knives) is suitable. This involves pricking the skin to release toxic blood, which constitutes the principle of applying Bian methods. In cases of Huoluan (Cholera-like disease with sudden vomiting and diarrhea) and Sha Zhang (Sha distension), when pathogenic factors have entered the Ying (Nutritive) level, it is essential to prick and release toxic blood. This allows the pathogens to be vented outward, after which medication can be administered according to the syndrome, offering hope for survival.
The first point to prick is Shao Shang (LU-11). During needling, support the patient in an upright sitting position. For males, use the left hand; for females, the right. Vigorously stroke the arm from top to bottom to guide stagnant blood to accumulate at the fingertip, then prick simultaneously. If the patient is comatose or unresponsive, and scraping or needling fails to relieve symptoms, it indicates that the pathogen has penetrated into the Pericardium Collateral. In this case, pry open the patient's mouth and inspect the underside of the tongue for three black veins. For males, select the left side; for females, the right. Use a bamboo chopstick to hold a porcelain shard (a sharp tool) and prick out a drop of stagnant blood. The creases of both elbows are named Qu Chi (LI-11). The creases of both knees are named Wei Zhong (BL-40). Dab these areas with warm water and pat them to reveal blue-green and red veins. In individuals with fair skin, purple veins may appear; these are all "Sha veins." Prick all of them with silver needles to release purple-black toxic blood. Do not prick the large tendons on the thighs; even if pricked, no toxic blood will emerge, and it may instead cause mental restlessness. Do not prick the upper part of the hard tendons on either side of the legs, as this may lead to tendon spasms. Historical accounts state: In the 16th year of the Chongzhen reign, epidemics such as "Geda Wen" (Nodular Plague) and "Yangmao Wen" (Wool Plague) occurred. Patients died immediately upon calling out their illness, without lingering. In August and September, millions perished. In October, a Fujian native understood the etiology, observing protruding veins behind the knee. Cases with purple veins were incurable, but those with red veins could survive if blood was rapidly released by pricking. The epidemic subsided only when frost and snow became frequent. I believe that although this plague was peculiar and caused rapid, massive mortality, it was nothing more than summer-heat toxic vapors penetrating deeply into the collaterals. Thus, mild cases could be saved by pricking, and the disease naturally waned with the arrival of heavy frost and snow. Examining Wang Gongzhen's *Yin An Suo Yu* from Jiaxing and Chen Songtao's *Zaihuang Jishi* from Tongxiang, both record: severe drought in the 14th year of Chongzhen, followed by continuous drought throughout the 15th and 16th years, causing nationwide famine and widespread epidemics. Synthesizing these three texts, it is undeniable that the pathogen was summer-dryness heat-toxin penetrating deeply into the Ying level. Therefore, the veins at Wei Zhong (BL-40) were already protruding and visible without the need for patting. These details are recorded to inform those concerned with public health.
*Yu Heng* further states: All needling techniques should involve only slight penetration of the needle tip into the flesh, avoiding deep insertion. Furthermore, since the locations of various acupoints cannot be clearly understood without personal observation, they are not fully documented here. However, it is reported that: For Sha syndrome accompanied by dizziness, prick Su Liao (GV-27). This point is located at the upper end of the nasal column, directly above the tip of the nose; insert the needle one cun. For headache, prick Feng Fu (DU-16). This point is located one cun above the posterior hairline, within the depression medial to the major tendon of the neck; insert the needle one cun. For unilateral headache, prick Feng Chi (GB-20). This point is located behind the ear, posterior to the temporal bone, below Nao Kong (GB-19), in the depression at the hairline; insert the needle one cun. For abdominal pain with vomiting, prick Shang Wan (CV-13). This point is located five cun above the umbilicus; insert the needle one cun. For abdominal pain with diarrhea, prick Xia Wan (CV-10). This point is located two cun above the umbilicus; insert the needle one cun. For abdominal pain with the urge to vomit but inability to do so, or the urge to defecate but inability to do so, prick Zhong Wan (CV-12). This point is located four cun above the umbilicus; insert the needle one cun to achieve recovery. For the above three points, the skin must be lifted vigorously by hand before needling (remember this well); for the above six points, bleeding is not required.
For spasms of the hands and feet, prick Shao Shang (LU-11). This point is on the medial side of the index finger, approximately the width of a leek leaf from the nail edge; release blood to stop the spasm immediately. For foot cramps, prick Li Dui (ST-45). This point is at the tip of the second toe, approximately the width of a leek leaf from the nail edge; release blood to stop the cramp immediately. To prick Cheng Jin (BL-57), located seven cun posterior to the heel on the lower leg; release blood to stop the condition immediately. To prick Cheng Shan (BL-57), located in the muscle gap below the calf; release blood to stop the condition immediately. For trismus (lockjaw), prick Ren Ying (ST-9). This point is located one cun and five fen lateral to the laryngeal prominence, where the carotid artery pulse is palpable; needling will immediately relieve the lockjaw.
Regarding Master Zhang's needling method, it must have been transmitted from a specific lineage. Rong Tang inherited this transmission, hence his needle treatment for Sha syndrome is extremely effective. Moreover, Rong Tang is benevolent and straightforward, not one of those who speak falsely for profit; thus, I trust him greatly. His work was previously published in medical books. Now, I reproduce this section in full so that remote villages can also treat patients according to their syndromes. Additionally, *Zhuanjin Zhengzhi* (Treatment of Tendon Spasms) states: At points such as Xin Kou (heart region), Yao Ji (waist and spine), and Shen Shu (BL-23), never heedlessly follow fools' advice to apply random needling. I personally witnessed one person who, after receiving a single needle at the heart region, instantly...
