Lei Gong said: After collection and refining, place raw Sichuan pepper (Zanthoxyli Pericarpium) in the vessel. For every jin (approx. 500g) of bear fat (Xiong Zhi), add fourteen raw Sichuan peppers. After refining, remove the solidified fat skin and peppers, store in a bottle, and use as needed.
Lei Gong said: When using elephant gallbladder (Xiang Dan), do not use mixed or impure ones. The dried specimen has green bamboo-like patterns on its surface, is smooth and fine, with a slightly sweet taste. Do not pound it together with other herbs initially. Pound this herb alone into powder first; after all other herbs are powdered, mix it into the prescription. This substance comes from white elephants killed by Hu people; the gallbladders are dried and transported to Hanzhong.
Lei Gong said: When using deer antler (Lu Rong), select those still attached to the head, saw off sections three cun long, and soak them in fast-flowing water in a container for one hundred days. Remove, shave off the rough outer layer with a knife, and wipe clean with cloth to remove scale. Then boil in alkali and vinegar for seven days, continuously adding vinegar without letting the fire go out. Do not apply heat during Xu hour (7-9 PM); cook only from Zi hour (11 PM-1 AM) to Xu hour. When done, the antler becomes white and soft like powder, then grind finely into powder. Subsequently, boil the gelatinous part with non-grain ash wine (Wu Hui Jiu), dry in shade, shave again, re-grind, and sieve for use. For every ten liang of preparation, use one yi (approx. 24 jin) of non-grain ash wine, boil until dry.
Lei Gong said: When using [herb name missing in original], first soak in pig lard (Zhu Zhi) overnight. The next morning, remove and roast over willow wood fire until blistered, then grind finely for use.
Lei Gong said: This is whey (Lao Zhi Jiang). When using, filter repeatedly through multiple layers of cotton cloth, boil two or three times in a copper vessel, and then use.
Lei Gong said: Regarding chicken eggs (Ji Zi), if urgently needed, do not break them casually. If incubation has reached twenty-one days, the embryo may have formed inside; breaking an empty shell renders it useless. Naturally ruptured eggs should also be discarded.
Lei Gong said: When refining honey (Feng Mi), one jin yields only twelve and a half liang or less. If the heat is insufficient or excessive, the result is unusable.
Lei Gong said: There are stone oyster (Shi Mu Li), stone fish oyster (Shi Yu Li), and true sea oyster (Zhen Hai Mu Li). Stone oysters have large backs, small shells resembling sand/stone, looking like oysters but round like turtle shells. Sea oysters can be used, but men must not take them as they cause loss of facial hair. True oysters are processed by roasting until white (Huo Pao Bai Pao) and tested with a touchstone; marks appear easily, confirming authenticity. Wan Nian Po (Mythical Amber/Polymer) is described as having miraculous effects. For processing, take twenty specimens, boil in running east-flowing water with one liang of salt for one fu shi (approx. 2-4 hours). Then, burn in fire until red hot. Finally, grind in a mortar into powder for use.
