Lei Gong says: The efficacy of melon seeds (Gua Zi) does not lie in the extraction of oil, and its therapeutic effect is short-lived. If one wishes to extract the oil, pound the raw material into a paste using a mortar, wrap it in three layers of paper, press it with heavy objects, until no more oil exudes.
Lei Gong says: When processing Realgar (Xionghuang), do not use Black Chicken Yellow (Hei Ji Huang), Self-Dead Yellow (Zi Si Huang), or Admixed Greasy Yellow (Jia Ni Huang). The "yellow" that has an odor resembles realgar but is unusable due to its smell. People at that time washed it with vinegar three times; after two washings, the odor disappeared, but one must not mistake it for usable realgar. Next is the admixed greasy yellow, which also resembles realgar but consists of alternating layers of yellow mineral and stone, making it unusable. Then there is Black Chicken Yellow, which resembles realgar and looks like the comb of a black chicken. For usage, the best quality resembles the color of a partridge's liver.
For preparation, first take Licorice Root (Gancao), Purple-backed Tiankui (Zibei Tiankui), Ground Beetle (Dizhan), and Bilenghua, four herbs, all finely chopped, five taels each, along with three taels of Realgar (Xionghuang). Place them in a crucible with flowing water from the east, and boil for three "Fu" periods (the days following the summer solstice). Remove, pound into powder, process by water levigation (shuifei), clarify to remove black impurities, dry in the sun, and grind again before medicinal use.
There is a substance called "Iron-Corroding Stone" (Jie Tieshi) found within realgar, also known as "Arrow-Attacking Yellow" (Fushi Huang), which can corrode iron and is not used in medicine.
Lei Gong says: When processing Sulfur (Liuhuang), do not use those with blue-red colors, nor those that are half-white and half-blue, or half-red and half-black. The yellow variety that is internally crystalline and pure, resembling living matter, is the most precious.
When using, take four taels. First, mix one yi of natural juice from Dragon-tail Mugwort (Longwei Hao), three yi of flowing water from the east, one yi of juice from Purple-backed Tiankui (Zibei Tiankui), and one yi of juice from Millet Stem (Susui Zi). Stir well. Seal the bottom of the crucible with Liu Yi Ni (Six-One Mud). Crush the sulfur and put it into the crucible. Gradually add the prepared herbal juices, boil over fire until the liquid is exhausted. Afterward, take ten taels of Stemona Root Powder (Bubai Mo), two jin of Willow Bark Powder (Liu Pi Mo), and two jin of Yicugcao (Yicu Grass), chop them finely. Boil the sulfur together with these herbs and flowing water from the east for three "Fu" periods. When finished, discard the herbs, retrieve the sulfur, wash it with cooked Licorice Decoction (Shu Gancao Tang), place it in a mortar, and grind it twenty thousand times before use.
Lei Gong says: When processing Orpiment (Cihuang), do not mistakenly use Admixed Stone Yellow (Jia Shi Huang), Black Yellow (Hei Huang), or Po Shu. A piece of Orpiment weighs four taels. According to the *Ganning Ji*, the highest grade is that which can be split open by finger pressure into thousands of layers and feels soft like rotten gold. During preparation, avoid contact with women, chickens, dogs, individuals who have recently committed sexual offenses, patients, eunuchs, those who died unnaturally, and places that were sites of punishment or filth. These are all taboos; if touched, Orpiment will turn black like iron, become unusable, and reduce human lifespan.
For preparing four taels, use five taels each of Tianbi Zhi (Tianbi Branch), Heyang Cao (Heyang Grass), and Susui Zi Cao (Susui Zi Grass). Use double the amount if they are fresh instead of dried. Boil them in a porcelain crucible for three "Fu" periods. Upon completion, golden-colored liquid sediment will settle at the bottom of the crucible. Rinse vigorously with flowing water from the east, repeating this washing process three times. Discard the water, retrieve the substance, wipe it dry, then pound and sieve it in a mortar, grinding it into dust-like particles for use.
