Lei Gong said: When using Dianthus superbus (Qumai), only the calyx and fruit shell are used; stems and leaves are not. If used together, it causes qi stagnation in the throat and urinary incontinence on an empty stomach.
Before use, Dianthus superbus must be soaked in Jin Zhu Li (Bamboo Sap from Dianthus) for one diurnal cycle (24 hours), then drained and sun-dried for use.
Lei Gong said: After harvesting, Dianthus superbus must be layered with cattail grass, steamed in a steamer for two diurnal cycles, then taken out, sun-dried, and the cattail grass completely removed before use.
During use, avoid contact with copper vessels. Ingestion after such contact causes throat obstruction and loss of vision.
Lei Gong said: When using Gentiana macrophylla (Qinjiao), identification must be made at the root texture. The left-textured variety is "Qin," which treats diseases; the right-textured variety is "Jiao," which induces Hong Kong Foot (podagra/foot swelling).
When using Gentiana macrophylla, first wipe off the yellow hairy coating with cloth, then soak in Huanyuan Tang (Restoring Origin Decoction) overnight. Take out the next morning and sun-dry for use.
Lei Gong said: When using Cibotium barometz (Gouji), finely chop it on a locust wood cutting board, dry by roasting, and pound in a wooden mortar.
Avoid contact with iron vessels.
Lei Gong said: When using Polygonatum sibiricum (Huangjing), first roast it in willow ash until yellow, break it open, and remove the small heart-shaped core about the size of a rice grain located in the internal mouth/nose structure. Then mix with glutinous rice and stir-fry together. When the rice turns yellow and cooked, remove the rice and take out the herb.
Those that are single round pieces, not split into two, and without wrinkles are called Dan Long Jing (Red Dragon Essence) and are not for medicinal use. If mistakenly ingested, it causes permanent flaccidity of sinews and vessels; this can be immediately cured by taking Polygonatum sibiricum combined with Indigofera tinctoria juice (Xiao Lan Zhi).
Lei Gong said: After harvesting, do not use those growing in clusters of four, known as Sangong Teng (Corpse-Abandoning Vine). Also, do not use Iris lactea (Malin); neither is used in medicine.
When using Epimedium (Yinyanghuo), scrape off the epidermis after harvest, finely chop, and also finely chop Polygonatum sibiricum. Cut both ingredients equally with a bamboo knife, steam twice for one diurnal cycle, then take out and sun-dry. Remove the Polygonatum sibiricum and use the Epimedium.
Lei Gong said: When using Epimedium, commonly referred to as Xianlingpi (Immortal Spirit Spleen), use shears to remove all flowers from the edges of the leaves, then finely chop. Stir-fry with sheep fat until the fat is fully absorbed.
For every jin (approx. 500g) of processed material, use 4 liang (approx. 200g) of sheep fat as the standard.
Lei Gong said: When using Smilax glabra (Tufuling), do not use Tou Shan Teng. Its Da Lang Gen resembles Tou Shan Teng but has a bitter taste at the tip and should not be ingested.
For processing Smilax glabra, finely chop, mix with wine, and steam from Si hour to Shen hour (approx. 9 AM to 3 PM). Take out, sun-dry, and use.
