Lei Gong said: When using (Antelope Horn), do not use the roots of Tianlan or Banzhou, as the shape and taste of their roots are similar; using them may lead to errors.
After harvesting, finely chop the material, then cover it with leaves of Polygonum cuspidatum (Huzhang) for one night, take it out, dry it in the sun, and use it.
Lei Gong said: When using, first select and clean it, soak it in wine overnight, drain it, wait until it is dry, then mix it with honey to moisten it, and steam it from Mao hour (05:00-07:00) to You hour (17:00-19:00). Take it out and dry it in the sun. Repeat this process of mixing with honey and steaming three times, then dry it in the sun again before use.
For every liang (approx. 37g) processed, soak it in eight liang of wine until the color changes, then steam it with half a liang of honey.
This herb was originally named Xiaojinhua (Little Brocade Flower).
Lei Gong said: It is best to use horses that are healthy, with tender flesh as white as silver, harvested in spring.
When ready for use, split it into seven pieces with a copper knife, mix it with fresh sheep blood, and steam it for half a day. Take it out, dry it in the sun, wipe off the skin and dried sheep blood with coarse cloth, finely chop it, and use it.
Furthermore, meat from a horse that died naturally is inedible. Do not consume it in the fifth month, as it damages the spirit.
Lei Gong said: When preparing Deer Antler Velvet (Lurong), first grind Tianlinggai (Human Calvaria) into powder. Then saw the deer antler velvet into slices, mix good mutton fat with the Tianlinggai powder, and apply this mixture onto the deer antler slices. Roast slowly over low heat until both inside and outside are yellow and crisp. Wrap it in a piece of deer skin and place it in a room overnight to allow the medicinal properties to return. The next morning, bake it slowly over low heat until crisp, then grind it into powder for use.
For every five liang of deer antler velvet, use three liang of mutton fat, roasting until fully absorbed.
Another preparation method: Soak it in the natural juice of Polygonatum sibiricum (Huangjing) for two days and nights, drain it, bake it until dry, finely grind it, and use it. This method prevents thirst in patients.
Lei Gong said: The use of Deer Antler (Lujiao) is superior to that of Elk Antler (Mijiao). The horn should be yellow, dense, heavy, and have a fine tip, because this deer feeds on spiritual herbs, distinguishing it from other common deer.
Lei Gong said: Among those used, there is also Shenyangjiao (Divine Sheep Horn). This divine sheep horn is long, has twenty-four nodes, and contains a naturally formed wooden core within. This horn possesses divine power, equivalent to the strength of a thousand oxen.
During processing, do not use single horns alone, as they will lose efficacy; it is necessary to use unseparated original pairs. Tie them with rope, file them with an iron file, and take them gradually, avoiding exposure to wind. Once filed into powder, wrap it in three layers of paper to prevent the loss of potency. After filing, pound it separately until completely pulverized, sieve it heavily in a windless location, and then add it to the medicine. If ground ten thousand more times, its efficacy is even better, preventing irritation to the intestines.
