Lei Gong said: When using (Psoralea corylifolia), which is inherently very drying and toxic, soak it in wine for one night, then drain. Subsequently, soak it in running water from the east for three days and nights, then steam it from Si hour to Shen hour. Take it out, dry it in the sun, and use it.
Lei Gong said: When using, grind it in a clay mortar with vinegar until completely ground, then dry it near fire, sift it again, and use it.
Lei Gong said: When using, first soak it in raw Licorice Root (Gancao) water for one shichen (two hours), then drain. Remove the head and roots, bake it dry, and it is ready for medicinal use.
Lei Gong said: After harvesting, dry it in the shade, and pound it in a stone mortar. Do not let it touch iron; this must be strictly avoided during use.
Lei Gong said: When using, after harvesting, remove the stem and wrinkled skin, soak and steam it in wine from Si hour to You hour. Take it out, finely pound it, and use as needed.
Lei Gong said: When using, select tender roots that are ten years old or older and grow towards the east. For processing, after harvesting, peel off the outer layer of greenish-yellow thin skin with a copper knife, retaining only the second layer which is white, tender, and contains greenish juice. Cleave it on a locust wood anvil with a copper knife, then bake it dry. Do not allow the juice on the skin to fall off, as the juice constitutes the medicinal efficacy. This herb is incompatible with iron and lead.
Lei Gong said: When using, first remove leaves, seeds, and impurities. Use a large basin to wash it with salt water one hundred times until the juice naturally disappears. Dry it in the sun, and it can be used in pills and powders. For processing ten taels of the herb, use two taels of salt, grind it into powder, add it to four dou of running water from the east, and wash it in one hundred portions. This method yields special effects. If boiling with vinegar, boil the vinegar more than thirty times first, then add Chinese Cornus Fruit (Zhu Yu). Wait until the vinegar is exhausted, then dry in the sun. For every ten taels of herb, use one yi of vinegar as the limit.
Lei Gong said: When using, select those that are solid, stable, hard-hearted, with textures like flowing water, and whose broken interiors resemble brocade patterns. Those that are half-white and half-black, or have hollow hearts, are not suitable for medicinal use. One must distinguish between "Bing" and "Lang". The round-headed, short-bodied type is Lang; the pointed-bodied, coarse-purple-textured type is Bing. Bing has weak efficacy, while Lang has strong efficacy. To prepare for use, scrape off the bottom with a knife and slice it finely. Do not process with fire, lest it lose efficacy. If processed thoroughly (cooked), it is better not to use it.
