A phlegm nodule forms in the neck and nape, hard as stone. Over time, it transforms into Scrofula (tuberculosis of cervical lymph nodes), discharging pus and blood. As one nodule fails to resolve, another grows; soon after, it ulcerates. It may appear under the ear, in the supraclavicular fossa, or on the shoulder, exhibiting a migratory and spreading pattern. Hence, it is named Rat Sore (Shu Chuang) or String Sore (Chuan Chuang), implying its ability to burrow like a rat. The common belief that this results from consuming food stolen by rats is incorrect.
Scrofula primarily originates from Phlegm accumulation, which arises from Qi Stagnation. Without Qi Stagnation, Phlegm cannot form; without Phlegm, Scrofula cannot develop. Treatment must focus on resolving Qi Stagnation and eliminating Phlegm. However, prolonged stagnation inevitably consumes Qi and Blood, leading to further deficiency. If one merely eliminates Phlegm without resolving Stagnation, or resolves Stagnation without eliminating Phlegm, the deficiency will only worsen, rendering treatment ineffective. I propose that for this condition, soothing the Liver and strengthening the Spleen is preferable, promoting the harmonious interaction between Wood (Liver) and Earth (Spleen) to achieve recovery. The prescription used is Qing Chuan Tang: Bai Shao (Caulis Paeoniae Albae, 1 liang), Bai Zhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae, 1 liang), Chai Hu (Radix Bupleuri, 2 qian), Pu Gong Ying (Herba Taraxaci, 3 qian), Tian Hua Fen (Radix Trichosanthis, 3 qian), Fu Ling (Poria, 5 qian), Chen Pi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae, 1 qian), Fu Zi (Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata, 1 qian), Zi Bei Tian Kui (Herba Basellae, 5 qian). Decoct with water and take orally. After six doses, the phlegm nodules gradually subside; after ten more doses, the Scrofula completely dissolves; continuing for one month leads to full recovery. For post-recovery care, several doses of Liu Jun Zi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction) can be taken to prevent recurrence. The brilliance of this formula lies in Pu Gong Ying and Tian Kui being divine herbs for dissipating string-like nodules. However, without Bai Shao and Chai Hu to soothe the Liver Wood, the Liver remains unbalanced; without Bai Zhu and Fu Ling to strengthen Spleen Earth, the Spleen remains weak. How could they withstand the harsh action of breaking down phlegm masses? Only through a combination of attacking and tonifying, properly balanced, and aided by Fu Zi to guide the descending properties directly to the core of the disease, can chronic ailments be cured in a short time.
Secret Formula:
Qing Chuan Tang contains one liang of Bai Shao and equal amount of Bai Zhu,
Two qian of Chai Hu, three qian each of Pu Gong Ying and Tian Hua Fen,
Five qian of Fu Ling, one qian each of Chen Pi, Fu Zi, and Gan Cao,
Five qian of Zi Bei Tian Kui boiled together.
Kang Le Tang is also effective for this condition:
Bai Zhu (5 qian), Fu Ling (5 qian), Xia Ku Cao (Spica Prunellae, 5 qian), Ban Xia (Rhizoma Pinelliae Preparata, 3 qian), Chao Xiang Fu (Fructus Cyperi Preparatus, 3 qian), Bai Fu Zi (Rhizoma Typhonii, 1 qian), Gan Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, 1 qian), Chen Pi (1 qian), Lian Qiao (Fructus Forsythiae, 2 qian), Bai Shao (1 liang). Decoct with water and take orally. Recovery occurs after ten doses.
Secret Formula:
Kang Le Tang uses five qian each of Bai Zhu, Fu Ling, and Xia Ku Cao,
Three qian of prepared Ban Xia and stir-fried Xiang Fu,
One qian each of Bai Fu Zi, Gan Cao, and Chen Pi,
Three qian of Lian Qiao and one liang of Bai Shao boiled together.
Some patients suffer from long-standing Scrofula, where both sides of the neck are completely ulcerated, spreading up to the chest and diaphragm. These are essentially phlegm masses that have ruptured and become putrid. This leads to fever and chills, emaciation, loss of appetite, spontaneous sweating, night sweats, palpitations, and mental confusion. Such conditions are originally difficult to treat, but if managed correctly, they can still be saved. Generally, early-stage Scrofula should be treated primarily by resolving Qi Stagnation and eliminating Phlegm, supplemented by tonifying deficiency to clear toxicity. In chronic stages, tonifying deficiency should be the primary method, supplemented by resolving Stagnation and eliminating Phlegm. If one focuses solely on expelling Phlegm and clearing toxicity without replenishing Qi and Blood, death is rarely avoided. The prescription used is Zhuan Bai Tang: Ren Shen (Radix Ginseng, 1 liang), Dang Gui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis, 1 liang), Tu Chao Bai Zhu (Earth-fried Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae, 1 liang), Yin Jin Hua (Flos Lonicerae Japonicae, 3 liang), Bai Shao (3 liang), Chai Hu (2 qian), Zhi Ban Xia (Prepared Rhizoma Pinelliae, 5 qian), Gan Cao (3 qian). Decoct with water and take orally. After four doses, chest congestion clears and Phlegm dissipates; after four more doses, ulcers heal. Reduce the dosage of the previous formula by half and take for ten more doses for full recovery. This formula emphasizes tonifying deficiency over eliminating Phlegm, incorporating Phlegm-resolving actions within Qi-moving strategies. This approach is unknown to most practitioners. If one relies solely on attacking toxicity, the condition will deteriorate further. This formula is truly an elixir for curing diseases and a divine product for saving lives.
Secret Formula:
One liang each of Ren Shen and Dang Gui, earth-fried Bai Zhu,
Three liang each of Yin Jin Hua and Bai Shao, two qian of Chai Hu,
Five qian of prepared Ban Xia, three qian of Gan Cao,
After eight doses, reduce the dose and take ten additional prescriptions.
Xiao Luo Tang is also effective for this condition:
Shu Fu Zi (Prepared Radix Aconiti Lateralis, 3 qian), Bai Zhu (1 liang), Mai Dong (Radix Ophiopogonis, 1 liang), Tu Si Zi (Semen Cuscutae, 1 liang), Bai Shao (1 liang), Tian Kui (1 liang), Ren Shen (5 qian), Fu Ling (5 qian), Gan Cao (3 qian), Bei Mu (Bulbus Fritillariae Cirrhosae, 3 qian). Decoct with water and take orally. Symptoms lighten after ten doses; full recovery occurs after thirty doses.
Secret Formula:
Xiao Luo Tang uses three qian of Shu Fu Zi,
One liang each of Bai Zhu, Mai Dong, and Tu Si Zi,
One liang each of Bai Shao and Tian Kui,
Five qian each of Ren Shen and Fu Ling, three qian each of Gan Cao and Bei Mu.
