(1) Buckwheat is difficult to digest and may stir up internal heat and wind pathogenic factors. It should not be consumed in excess. [Meng Shen]
(2) Although buckwheat may induce various ailments, it can still suppress the effects of Dan Shi (mineral drugs). It can cleanse the turbid residues of the five Zang organs and replenish spirit. The leaves can be boiled as vegetables; they are very beneficial for the ears and eyes and help to direct Qi downward. Ash from the stems can be used to wash sores and scabies on livestock and the hooves of horses, with miraculous efficacy. [Meng Shen]
(Buckwheat)
(3) Buckwheat tastes sweet, is neutral and cold in nature, and is non-toxic. It solidifies the intestines and stomach, boosts energy and strength, but long-term consumption stirs up wind, causing dizziness. Consuming it with pork may lead to wind-heat disorders and loss of eyebrows and beard. Although it may trigger various diseases, it can also counteract the toxicity of Dan Shi (mineral drugs). It refines the turbidity of the five Zang organs and replenishes spirit. Eating it as rice is excellent for those taking mineral drugs. The method for preparing it: steam until the vapor penetrates, then dry under the scorching sun until the grains split open. Pounding them into flour for human consumption follows. Boiled leaves eaten as vegetables direct Qi downward and benefit the ears and eyes. Excessive consumption causes mild diarrhea. Burning the stalks to ash, leaching the lye, and washing livestock sores and the restless hooves of donkeys and horses is effective. [Chen Cangqi, Supplementary Notes]
(White Hyacinth Bean / Dolichos Lablab)
(1) It primarily treats vomiting and regurgitation; long-term consumption prevents hair from turning white. Those suffering from cold qi disorders should avoid eating it. [Li Xun]
(2) It treats cholera-like syndrome characterized by incessant vomiting and dysentery. Powdered bean mixed with vinegar and taken orally helps to direct Qi downward. [Chen Cangqi]
(3) The leaves treat Zhang masses (abdominal masses); boil them with vinegar. To treat muscle cramps (tetany), drinking the leaf juice with vinegar is effective. [Li Xun]
(4) Additionally, for muscle cramps following vomiting and dysentery, crush one handful of fresh leaves, soak them in a small amount of vinegar, extract the juice, and drink it; recovery is immediate. [Chen Cangqi]
(5) The beans resemble mung beans and can also be made into cakes. [Chen Cangqi]
(Fermented Soybean / Dou Chi)
(1) It can treat patients with chronic night sweats. Take two sheng of Dou Chi, lightly stir-fry until fragrant, and steep in three sheng of clear wine. After three full days, extract the liquid. Patients may take it warm or cold at their discretion. If symptoms do not improve, prepare two or three more doses, and the sweating will cease. [Chen Cangqi]
(2) Dou Chi juice from Shan Prefecture is superior to ordinary Dou Chi. Make Huang Zheng (fermented starter) from soybeans; for every dou of beans, add four sheng of salt and four liang of Sichuan pepper. Ferment for three days in spring, two days in summer, and five days in winter. When half-fermented, add five liang of fresh ginger. This method yields a product that is both clean and refined, surpassing the traditional method of burying in horse manure. Huang Zheng can be substituted with high-quality Dou Chi hearts. [Li Xun]
