Turnip (Brassica rapa): Pungent in flavor, warm and neutral in nature, non-toxic. It resembles Artemisia annua (Sweet Wormwood) but is finer and softer. It primarily treats foul, rotten, and evil qi in the chest and diaphragm. It benefits the intestines and stomach, unblocks blood vessels, and replenishes deficient qi. Consumed raw, it slightly stirs up wind-qi; prepared as a soup, it is beneficial. It should not be eaten with Coriandrum sativum (Cilantro), as this combination causes sweaty odor. [Supplement from Jia You Ben Cao]
It primarily calms heart qi, nourishes the spleen and stomach, and resolves fluid retention. Additionally, it stirs up wind-qi, steams into the heart, causing abdominal fullness, and thus should not be consumed in excess. [Supplement from Jia You Ben Cao]
(1) Pungent in flavor, warm in nature, slightly toxic. It harmonizes the middle jiao, promotes digestion, eliminates foul qi, resolves fluid accumulation, and is suitable for raw consumption. Additionally, it treats rotting ulcers at the tooth roots; using it as ash is very effective. Excessive consumption obstructs the joints, causes stagnation of Ying and Wei (nutritive and defensive qi), and impedes blood vessel circulation. Furthermore, it stirs up wind and triggers gouty arthritis (Hong Kong foot). For those suffering from gouty arthritis, consuming half he of its juice can resolve the condition. In winter, use dried material to decoct. [Supplement from Jia You Ben Cao]
(2) Seeds: Primarily treat leukoma (cataracts/opaque cornea) and foreign bodies entering the eye. Placing three to five seeds in the eye will cause moisture and swelling shortly after, allowing the foreign body to exit along with tears. Additionally, it treats red eyes with discharge and tearing caused by wind-heat. [Supplement from Jia You Ben Cao]
(3) Roots: Primarily treat yellow, rotting sores in children; applying ash externally is excellent. People in the north call it "Lan Xiang" (Fragrant Orchid) to avoid the naming taboo of Shi Le. [Supplement from Jia You Ben Cao]
Centipedia minima (Go-Bu-Shi-Cao): Non-toxic. It unblocks nasal qi, benefits the nine orifices, expels wind-phlegm, but is not suitable for dietary consumption. It can also remove leukoma; when cooked material is inserted into the nose, the leukoma falls off naturally. Commonly known as "Go-Bu-Shi-Cao" (Grass that Geese Do Not Eat). [Supplement from Jia You Ben Cao]
(1) Promotes digestion, directs qi downward, treats jaundice, and promotes urination. The root primarily treats polydipsia (wasting-thirst syndrome) and heat-toxin wind swelling. Consumption causes abdominal distension and fullness. [Chen Zangqi's Supplement to Materia Medica]
(2) Its seeds: After nine steamings and nine sun-dryings, ground into powder, consumption promotes longevity. Pressed oil applied to the hair can change garlic-smelling hair to black hair. [Li Xun's Sea Drug Materia Medica]
(3) Additionally, grinding seeds into powder and adding them to facial cream is highly effective for removing wrinkles. [Li Xun's Sea Drug Materia Medica]
(4) Additionally, crushing seeds and taking them with water treats heat-type jaundice and solid obstruction; shortly after ingestion, all harmful substances, including sand, stones, grass, and hair, will be purged. It also promotes urination. [Li Xun's Sea Drug Materia Medica]
(5) Additionally, for women suffering from engorgement and swelling due to milk retention (jealous breast), take the fresh root, crush it, boil it with salt, vinegar, and sour gruel, then use the juice to wash the affected area. Five to six applications will cure it. Alternatively, crushing seeds and mixing them with egg white for topical application is also excellent. [Li Xun's Sea Drug Materia Medica]
