Bitter and fragrant in taste, non-toxic. Eliminates evil qi (pathogenic factors), warms the middle jiao (middle burner) and benefits the diaphragm, regulates qi to relieve pain, generates fluids to quench thirst, and makes the breath fragrant. (Grows in Huiai regions, said to be an extremely fragrant variety.)
Sweet in taste, neutral in nature, non-toxic. Primarily treats depression and accumulation of heart qi, and stagnant qi that does not dissipate; long-term consumption brings joy to the heart. (Refers to Honghua [Carthamus tinctorius] from Huiai regions, though it is unclear if this is accurate.)
Pungent in taste, warm in nature, non-toxic. Primarily kills various parasites, removes foul odors, breaks up zhengjia (abdominal masses), expels malignant pathogens, and resolves gu poison (poison caused by venomous creatures or toxins). (This is Asafoetida/Awei.)
Pungent in taste, warm and bitter in nature, non-toxic. Primarily kills parasites and removes foul odors. Its taste is identical to Awei. It is also said to be the root of the Awei tree; when used to marinate mutton, the fragrance is very delicious.
Pungent in taste, warm in nature, non-toxic. Primarily treats postpartum blood vertigo (xue yun), colic pain in the heart and abdomen, and can be applied externally to treat migratory swelling.
Bitter in taste, cold in nature, non-toxic. Primarily treats evil qi within the five zang organs, cures redness and heat in the eyes, and promotes urination.
Sweet in taste, neutral in nature, non-toxic. Treats cold-heat conditions in the heart and abdomen, promotes urination, and stops bleeding disorders.
Sweet in taste, cold in nature, non-toxic. Resolves toxicity from various medicines. Can be applied externally to treat heat-toxin sores and swellings.
*Yinshan Zhengyao* consists of three volumes, written by Hu Sihui of the Yuan Dynasty. It includes a memorial presenting the book by Chang Puxian in the third year of Tianli, and a preface commissioned by Yu Ji. It is likely an official dietary medical text of the Yuan Dynasty. It was reprinted in the imperial workshop during the Jingtai era of the Ming Dynasty. This copy is recorded in *Song Lou Cangshu Zhi* as a Yuan block-printed and Yuan printed edition. I previously saw a copy held by the Tieqin Tongjian Lou library of the Qu family in Changshu; although carved from the same blocks, its paper and printing quality are inferior. The presence of a Jingtai preface indicates this is a Ming edition rather than a Yuan one, specifically missing another Jingtai preface. The book details infant care, pregnancy, dietary hygiene, and food properties and contraindications. Although these contents may not align with modern medical truths, they allow us to observe the customs of the Yuan people. Old folk copies were extremely rare, and recent catalogues list mostly manuscript copies, which are ultimately less reliable than this printed edition. I sought this book for many years and finally encountered it at the Seikado Bunko Library in Tokyo in the winter of the seventeenth year, allowing me to borrow it for printing and dissemination, thus fulfilling my long-held wish.
Zhang Yuanji of Yanhai, October, the 19th Year of the Republic of China
The Jingtai preface was originally lost and could not be included in the first edition, which is a regret. Later borrowed from the Qu family, it is now being included at the beginning of the volume for this reprint. Readers please note.
Zhang Yuanji records again.
