Sanxiao Wan (Three-Consumption Pill): Treats mass-like pain in women caused by three conditions: dead blood (stasis), food accumulation, and phlegm knotting. The prescription consists of: Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) 1.5 qian (soaked in decoction of Wuzhuyu (Evodiae Fructus) 4 qian, strained; after soaking for an extended period, remove and stir-fry until dry; take half of the Huanglian and stir-fry with Yizhi (Alpiniae Oxyphyllae Fructus) until thoroughly fried, then remove Yizhi; add Laifuzi (Raphani Semen) 1.5 liang and stir-fry together), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Taoren (Persicae Semen [peeled and tip removed]), Heizhi (Gardeniae Fructus), Maipi (Wheat Bran), Qu (Medicated Leaven), Sanleng (Sparganii Rhizoma), Ezhu (Curcumae Rhizoma) each 5 qian (vinegar-processed), Shanzha (Crataegi Fructus), Xiangfu (Cyperi Rhizoma) each 1 liang. Grind all into powder, use steamed paste as a binder to form pills.
Wujin San (Black Gold Powder): Treats eighteen postpartum syndromes: 1. Dystocia (difficult labor); 2. Retained placenta; 3. Retained dead fetus; 4. Blurred vision; 5. Dry mouth and chest oppression; 6. Alternating chills and fever resembling malaria; 7. Cough with unstable chills and fever; 8. Stasis blood coagulating like liver tissue; 9. Stasis blood entering limbs causing edema; 10. Aphonia (loss of voice); 11. Blood-pathogen induced mania and delirious speech; 12. Heart and abdominal pain; 13. Soreness and pain in bone joints; 14. Dry tongue with depleted fluids, epistaxis (nosebleed), sores around the neck; 15. Lower back pain resembling opisthotonos (arched back); 16. Scanty and constricted urination; 17. Cicada-like sound in the throat; 18. Fullness of qi in chest and diaphragm, wheezing, inability to eat. Ingredients include: Wu Jin Zi (Soybean, Glycine max), Ziwei (Campsis Radix), Daji Gen (Taraxaci Radix), Xiaoji Gen (Taraxaci Herba), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex [bark removed]), Xueyu (Capillus Carbonisatus [hair from a healthy person, charred but retaining properties]), Puhuang (Typhae Pollen), Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix), Qingpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride), Chishao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), Zaojiao (Gleditsiae Fructus [non-borer, charred but retaining properties), Canchezi (Bombyx Batryticatus [charred but retaining properties]), and burnt ash.
Jikun Dan (also known Huisheng Zhibao Dan): Treats the same conditions as Wujin San. It takes effect very quickly, but its action is too harsh; it should not be used unless absolutely necessary. Ingredients include: Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Niuxi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix), Puhuang (Typhae Pollen [mixed with wine, stir-fried between papers]), Fuling (Poria), Taoren (Persicae Semen), Shudi (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata) each 1 liang (these herbs must undergo nine steamings and nine sun-dryings), Sanleng (Sparganii Rhizoma), Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) each 5 qian, Sumu (Sappan Lignum) 3 liang. Place these ingredients in good wine (3 bowls) and reduce/heavily simmer.
The above three prescriptions are all symptomatic treatments (treating the branch). If the condition allows for slight relaxation, one should still prioritize major tonification (treating the root). Even if absolutely necessary to use them, only take two pills at a time, followed immediately by tonic agents. Otherwise, while seeking temporary relief may yield quick results without immediate failure, disaster will follow swiftly, and regret will come too late.
