This formula treats carbuncles, back sores, "duikou" ulcers (sores at the back of the neck), ding chuang (hard boils), and all types of erysipelas, tumors, and malignant toxins, characterized by local redness, swelling, heat, and pain, with a floating and rapid pulse. Taking this formula can disperse heat, resolve stasis, promote blood circulation, reduce swelling, detoxify, and unblock the zang-fu organs. It is a formula that treats both the exterior and interior simultaneously. Composition: Qianghuo, Yinhua (Jinyinhua/Flos Lonicerae Japonicae), Tianhuafen (Trichosanthis Radix), Guiwei (the tail of Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Zaocispina (Gleditsiae Spina), and Gancao jie (the jointed part of Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), each one qian; Shijueming (Concha Arcae), Chanshanjia (Pangolin Scale, calcined), Chenxiang (Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum), Rushi (Olibanum), Honghua (Carthami Flos), Baizhi, Lianqiao, and Fangfeng, each one qian.
For yang-toxin carbuncles located in the interior, presenting initially with fever, constipation, dry and cracked lips, dry tongue, irritability, thirst, vomiting, and belching, with a deep, rapid, and forceful pulse, this formula is used for purging. Composition: Huanglian, Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus), Lianqiao, Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba), Tiaoxin (Scutellariae Radix, specifically Huangqin), Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Jiegeng, Binglang (Arecae Semen), each one qian; Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix) and Gancao, each five fen; Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), two qian. When decocting and taking, add one or two spoons of white honey. Dahuang and Binglang should not be used recklessly unless the pulse is deep and solid. If the pulse is floating, rapid, and choppy, it indicates deficiency of both qi and blood, and they must absolutely not be used.
