Whenever a pregnant woman's spleen and stomach functions are robust and her qi and blood are sufficient, the fetus remains secure and delivery proceeds smoothly; why would medication be needed for regulation? Only when one lacks innate endowment, resulting in deficient qi and blood, or when the spleen and stomach are weak due to overexertion, leading to various symptoms, is it necessary to rely on medicinal power. In the past, Master Danxi formulated prescriptions for nourishing the mother to secure the fetus, focusing primarily on tonifying qi and blood, with regulating qi and clearing heat as auxiliaries. Ren Shen (Ginseng), Bai Zhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome), and Huang Qin (Scutellaria Baicalensis Root) are considered holy medicines for securing the fetus; Xiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome), Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis Radix), and Shu Di Huang (Rehmannia Glutinosa Root Prepared) are excellent agents for nourishing blood. Combined with Zi Su Ye (Perilla Leaf) and Chen Pi (Citrus Reticulata Peel), they form a main prescription for regular use. By the sixth month of fetal development, Fu Ling (Poria) has a descending nature and should not be used excessively. Huang Qin (Scutellaria Baicalensis Root) promotes fetal growth but should not be added frequently. Xiang Fu (Cyperus Rotundus Rhizome) although effective for moving qi and soothing the liver, if overused consumes qi without providing benefit. Sha Ren (Amomum Villosum Fruit) can stop vomiting and relieve pain, but excessive use may disturb blood and move the fetus. These are indeed the laws and warnings of former sages, and the standards for later learners. However, considering this insufficiently comprehensive, I analyzed various conditions during pregnancy and drafted dozens of prescriptions for reference during clinical practice.
Morning Sickness (E Zu): Whenever a pregnant woman experiences morning sickness in the first or second month of pregnancy, characterized by vomiting, nausea, mental restlessness, and lethargy, it is commonly known as "sickness of the child." This arises from the woman's constitutional weakness, irregular emotions of anger and joy in daily life, imbalance with cold and heat, and the presence of retained phlegm and fluid accumulation in the middle jiao (epigastrium). After conception, menstruation ceases, food interacts with internal pathogens, qi fails to circulate freely, leading to epigastric distress, dizziness, blurred vision, limb fatigue, vomiting upon smelling food, craving sour and fresh foods, preferring lying down over rising, and even severe vomiting preventing food intake. The treatment method should regulate qi and harmonize blood, resolve phlegm and guide out fluids, so that all symptoms will naturally disappear. Treat with Modified Ginseng and Tangerine Peel Decoction (Jia Wei Shen Ju Yin).
Modified Ginseng and Tangerine Peel Decoction (Jia Wei Shen Ju Yin): Ren Shen (Ginseng) 1 qian, Bai Zhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome) 2 qian, Sha Ren (Amomum Villosum Fruit) 3 fen, Hou Po (Magnolia Officinalis Bark) 1 qian, Ju Hong (Citrus Reticulata Pericarpium Rubrum) 4 fen, Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis Radix) 1 qian, Xiang Fu (Cyperus Rotundus Rhizome) 5 fen, Gan Cao (Licorice Root) 3 fen, Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger) 3 slices, Zhu Ru (Bamboo Shavings) 1 pill. If the patient is too weak to take Ren Shen (Ginseng), it may be omitted. Another version adds Ban Xia Qu (Pinellia Fermented Powder) 8 fen.
Pinellia and Poria Decoction (Ban Xia Fu Ling Tang): Treats spleen and stomach deficiency during pregnancy, inability to digest food, and incessant vomiting. Ban Xia (Pinellia Ternata Tuber stir-fried with ginger juice until yellow), Chen Pi (Citrus Reticulata Peel), and Sha Ren (Amomum Villosum Fruit) in equal amounts. (Note: Original text appears incomplete regarding dosage).
Bitter Pomelo Single Herb Prescription: Treats pregnancy morning sickness, vomiting, inability to eat, dizziness, and inability to walk. Bitter pomelo peel, any amount, decocted into a strong soup and drunk in several cups until cured. For severe vomiting, add a few drops of fresh ginger juice.
