Whenever the measles rash fails to erupt fully, accompanied by severe asthma approaching death, immediately use five he (approx. 50 ml) of Sesamum indicum L. (Zhimai, 芝麻), soak it in boiling water, and fumigate the head and face with the rising heat while hot. This is a miraculous method for reviving the dying.
Another prescription: Decoct millet (Setaria italica, specifically red-husked varieties) in water and take it at any time. It appears plain but has extraordinary efficacy.
Yet another prescription: Take four or five jin (approx. 2-2.5 kg) of Prunus pseudocerasus (Yingtao, 樱桃), seal them tightly in a porcelain bottle, bury it in the soil, and let it transform into liquid over two to three months. In critical cases of this disease, take one cup of this juice, warm it slightly, and administer orally. The effect of reviving the near-dead is unparalleled; do not neglect it. Those with benevolent intentions should prepare this in advance to help others, accumulating great merit.
Yet another prescription: Burn Agarwood (Agarwood, 沉香), Costus root (Aucklandiae Radix, 木香), and Sandalwood (Sandalwood, 檀香) in unspecified quantities in a fire basin. Hold the child above the smoke to fumigate, and the condition will improve.
Mix good white honey with water, and frequently dip and apply it to the affected area using a goose feather.
Wang Hongxu stated: Both carbuncles (Yong, 痈) and gangrenous sores (Ju, 疽) originate from the Heart, because the Heart governs blood and moves qi. When qi and blood stagnate, toxicity arises. The name depends on the location, and errors occur if treatment does not follow the meridian principles.
If the lesion exceeds one cun in diameter and is red and swollen, it is called a carbuncle (Yong, 痈), which arises from the Six Fu Organs. If the shape is only a few fen in size, it is called a small furuncle (Jie, 疖). If pressing causes depression that does not immediately rebound, and the top is warm but not very hot, pus has not yet formed. If pressing causes the tissue to rise with the finger, and the top is soft with severe heat, pus is mature. For lesions without pus, resolution is indicated; for those with pus, do not delay drainage. Xingxiao Yipin can immediately reduce swelling and relieve pain, serving as a sacred medicine for treating carbuncles.
White and depressed lesions are called gangrenous sores (Ju, 疽), which arise from the Five Zang Organs. Thus, Ju has deep roots while Yong has shallow toxicity. If the base is red and diffuse, it indicates Qi deficiency failing to constrain blood tightly. If the base is vibrant and glossy, it indicates Qi and Blood constraining the toxicity to expel it outward. If the exterior is red but the interior is black, toxicity is stagnant inside. If the color is purple and dark unclear, Qi and Blood are insufficient to transform toxicity into pus. Thick pus indicates robust Qi and Blood; thin pus indicates declining Qi and Blood. Before pus formation, Yong involves stagnation of Fire-Toxicity in the interstices, while Ju involves coagulation of Cold-Phlegm in the interstices. After pus formation, Yong requires supporting expulsion due to residual Heat-Toxicity, while Ju requires warming due to unresolved Cold-Coagulation. Even in intense summer heat, Cold-Ju still requires warmth; even in severe winter cold, Heat-Toxicity prefers cooling. However, treatments for Yin Deficiency and Yang Excess are vastly different. Ancient texts rarely detail this, so I establish these principles for reference.
All Ju presenting as white depressions are caused by Qi and Blood deficiency with Cold-Stagnation. Initially, when toxicity sinks into the Yin aspect, unless Yang-Warmth penetrates the interstices, how can Cold-Coagulation be resolved? After ulceration, if Yin-Blood is dry, unless Yin is nourished and Yang warmed, how can pus become thick? Generally, Qi forms the structure, and Blood provides luster. Therefore, for flat Ju unable to expel toxicity, once Yang-Warmth turns, the condensed toxicity in the Yin aspect naturally resolves. For Blood deficiency failing to transform toxicity, warming and tonifying to drain pus is especially appropriate. Thus, during the phase of draining pus with residual toxic vapors, herbs that open the interstices must not be delayed. Once tolerated and indulged, toxicity remains; once resolved and unblocked, toxicity dissipates. Opening interstices without concurrent warming and tonifying cannot transform Qi and Blood deficiency-Cold into pus, akin to cooking without rice. Tonifying without opening interstices merely supplements weakness, leaving no path for Cold-Coagulated toxicity to dissipate; moreover, severe toxicity may be aided by tonification, like feeding grain to thieves. Tonifying without warmth leads to Blood stasis and Qi stagnation, lacking the means to brew pus, just as wine cannot ferment without heat, nor rice cook without fire.
The world knows only to clear Fire generally to detoxify, unaware that toxicity is essentially Cold. Resolving Cold transforms toxicity; clearing Fire condenses it further. Toxicity transformation necessarily proceeds through pus; pus generation relies on Qi and Blood; Qi and Blood transformation relies on Warmth. How can cooling agents be used? Cooling formulas are only applicable to red-swollen Yong and Jie. For Ju in Yin-Cold dangerous locations, warming and tonifying are barely sufficient; how can one recklessly use clearing and resolving agents that damage Stomach Qi? This may lead to failure of Yang-Warmth to振奋 (revitalize), difficulty in ulceration and resolution, and toxicity attacking internal organs. Is this not fearful?
Since the Spleen and Stomach relate to life and death, pain relief is paramount, followed by strengthening the Spleen. When pain stops, evil Qi transforms; when the Spleen strengthens, muscle grows. As Yang-Warmth increases and muscles regenerate, use harmonizing formulas to tonify Qi and nourish Blood. Herbs with cold properties such as Rhinoceros Horn (Xijiao, 犀角 - note: banned, substitute available), Antelope Horn (Lingyangjiao, 羚羊角), and Forsythia (Lianqiao, 连翘) should strictly be prohibited throughout.
Yong and Ju are completely distinct paths. Yang syndromes are Yong; Yin syndromes are Ju. Treatment methods differ radically. The world often treats Yong and Ju together, causing endless harm. Although ancient and modern formularies distinguish Yin-Yang and Deficiency-Excess, their treatments are rarely perfect. Only Mr. Wang Hongxu (pseudonym Linwu Shanren) in his "Waike Quansheng Ji" (Complete Life Preservation in Surgery), a family secret text, analyzes Yin-Yang and Deficiency-Excess theories with extreme precision and completeness. It uses no ascending/descending herbs and employs no knives or scissors. Having practiced for over forty years, his prescriptions have never erred. The book is easy to understand upon opening, allowing learning without formal instruction. The book consists of only two volumes, priced cheaply, printed in Jiangnan provincial capital, and also sold in Hunan and Hubei. Everyone should purchase a copy, benefiting oneself and helping others. Surgeons paying attention to this should not neglect it.
