Secrets and Applications of the Twelve Meridians in the Huangdi Neijing
Daoist Physician from Wudang Mountain: Zhu Huaying
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Author Biography
Zhu Huaying is a Daoist physician affiliated with the Daoist Association of Wudang Mountain, bearing the Daoist name Dazhizi. He was born into a farming family in Beizha Township, Gong'an County, Hubei Province. As a child, Master Zhu suffered from frequent illnesses; upon reaching adulthood, he resolutely self-studied Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). During his study and research of the ancient medical classic *Huangdi Neijing* (Yellow Emperor's Inner Canon), he was led into a vast and obscure realm by the intricate routes and branch pathways of the Twelve Meridians (Twelve Primary Channels), Jingjin (Musculoskeletal System), meridians and collaterals, and the Eight Extraordinary Vessels. In order to explore and verify the profound mysteries of the "Twelve Meridians," Master Zhu began cultivating his nature and body in the 1960s, contemplating methods for longevity. He gradually integrated national medicine with Xianxue (Daoist Immortal Studies), finally attaining enlightenment on the subtle movement laws of the "Twelve Meridians" within the state of "Fetal Breathing" (Tai Xi, a deep meditative breathing state). He revealed the true essence of the "Twelve Meridians," which had been lost for thousands of years, and meticulously analyzed and clarified the hidden parts of the ancient sages' teachings to complete the whole picture.
Master Zhu Huaying is currently sixty-eight years old. Due to his family background, he only received primary education. Later, seeing that many clansmen suffered from diseases, he resolved to self-study TCM. For over forty years, he has practiced medicine without accepting any payment. Having lived as a monk at Wudang Mountain for more than twenty years, his meridians have long been unblocked through decades of cultivation. According to his theory of the Twelve Meridians, his diagnostic and treatment effects are excellent. Besides local mountain residents, many people travel from other regions, provinces, and even abroad to seek his medical care. I often say that if you wanted to get rich, you would have had tens of millions long ago. This is Master Zhu's new book.
A few years ago, Master Zhu published his *Revealing the Secrets of the Twelve Meridians in the Huangdi Neijing* by purchasing an ISBN. It cost over ten thousand yuan. Five thousand copies were printed, but he did not know how to sell them, so most were transported from Beijing to Wudang Mountain to be sold personally. When friends from out of town ordered books by mail, Master Zhu had to run down the mountain to mail them. The postage fees were often irregular, meaning he lost money on every copy sent. Living in the deep mountains for a long time with few social connections, it was truly difficult for him to publish books. This new booklet was self-published, with some funding provided by friends. Master Zhu spent one or two ten-thousand yuan and was still cheated.
The Twelve Meridians are the richest and most critical foundation of the meridian theory in TCM, and also the core of the *Huangdi Neijing · Ling Shu* (Spiritual Pivot). Because understanding this requires a foundation of spiritual cultivation and realization, and the reality of the invisible part of the meridians' operation has historically been regarded by Daoists as heavenly secrets kept confidential, discussions in medical books throughout history have either been erroneous and inappropriate or vague and unclear, with few accurate and perfect explanations. Master Zhu Huaying of Wudang Mountain studied medicine fervently in his youth and practiced Quanzhen Internal Alchemy. Reaching the state of Fetal Breathing during practice, he discovered and verified the subtle operational laws of the human Twelve Meridians. Master Zhu discovered that the operation of the human Twelve Meridians is bidirectional regarding Yin and Yang, and opposite regarding left and right. However, the *Su Wen* (Basic Questions) and *Ling Shu* only briefly described the "positive operational mechanism" of one side, while remaining silent about the "negative operational mechanism" of the other side. This caused later scholars to be unclear about the ultimate truth, leading to a rigid and dogmatic "Meridian Theory." Master Zhu applied his discoveries to clinical practice, greatly improving curative effects. Many cases that famous large hospitals found helpless could often be miraculously cured under Master Zhu's hands.
Master Zhu is calm and indifferent to fame and wealth, chivalrous and righteous. He practiced medicine to save the world for over thirty years without taking any money, enjoying high prestige in the Daoist community and among people in Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan. In recent years, he has lived in seclusion, focusing on writing, and completed the grand work *Revealing the Secrets and Applications of the Twelve Meridians in the Huangdi Neijing*, revealing all the mysteries of the Twelve Meridians. Commentators say this book reveals three-quarters of the wonders of meridian theory that have never been shown to people before; given its value, it might be included in the *Daoist Canon* to be passed down to future generations.
Content Summary
The essence of the *Huangdi Neijing · Ling Shu* is the "Twelve Meridians"; the most fundamental and important principle in meridian theory is also the "Twelve Meridians." Thus, the "Twelve Meridians" are both the basic knowledge of TCM theory and the deepest core theory for learning and researching TCM. However, to avoid generalizing from partial information, various editions have rarely provided complete discussions throughout history. Furthermore, because the creation and understanding of this theory possess the特殊性 (special nature) of "realization/experience," for thousands of years, the "Twelve Meridians" have been almost a "secret," with few obtaining knowledge solely from books. This poor Daoist had the affinity to discover and verify the subtle movement laws of the "Twelve Meridians" when reaching the state of Fetal Breathing during practice. Afterwards, he gradually delved deeper and clearly grasped their profound secrets, using the mechanism of the "Twelve Meridians" to diagnose and cure many difficult and complicated diseases.
This book provides a detailed discussion on the theory of the "Twelve Meridians." Regarding pulse diagnosis, it mostly describes pulse images based on the pulse diagnosis methods in the *Ling Shu Jing*. Combining personal insights into pulse diagnosis, it particularly focuses on the differences in the flourishing and declining states of Yin and Yang pulse images at the Maikou (Radial Artery Pulse Position) and Yingying (Carotid Artery Pulse Position), and pays attention to the strength differences between the Cun (Inch) and Chi (Cubit) positions of Yin and Yang arteries. This is used to confirm whether the positive and negative movements of Yin and Yang meridians are excessive or insufficient. Therefore, these pulse images cannot be discussed together with those in other pulse studies.
Medical terms related to the theory of the "Twelve Meridians" in this book, such as "mechanism," "pulse wave," "Jing Qi" (Meridian Qi), "function," "left-right Yin-Yang positive-negative movement," "entering-exiting ascending-descending," etc., are specifically defined by the author based on the formless yet actually existing energy of human activity within the body.
This book makes public the results of this poor Daoist's decades of research on the "Twelve Meridians" and contributes his therapeutic experiences and clinical summaries in pulse diagnosis, acupuncture, massage, and prescription medication. It is intended only for reading and reference by professionals in the fields of TCM and Chinese materia medica, researchers in human science, and enthusiasts of health preservation and natural therapies.
Preface One
I have heard that in ancient times, the Way of Medicine was connected to the Way of Immortals. Harmonizing operations and transformations, aligning heaven and earth, was done only by those cultivating the True Dao. Although medicine is a minor art, its principles are profound and mysterious, thus concerning the spirit of all living beings in the world and matters of life and death.
Master Zhu Huaying suffered from illness in his childhood. After becoming an adult, he read many medical books and received guidance from eminent experts, treating many people in his hometown with excellent curative effects. After years of practical exploration, he ultimately could not break through the constraints of ancient and modern medical principles. Later, he became a monk at Wudang Mountain, contemplating methods for longevity, and received guidance from many high Daoist masters. He gradually integrated medicine with immortal studies, especially conducting unique research on the theory of the "Twelve Meridians" in the classic work *Huangdi Neijing*. In the clinical process of using acupuncture, massage, and drug therapy to treat diseases, he felt that the ancients had not comprehensively discussed the principles related to the "Twelve Meridians" in literature. Through thirty-plus years of diligent study, combined with personal cultivation experience and exploration, and after years of repeated clinical trials, he obtained practical experience.
To promote the clarity of medicine, with a moral heart, Master Zhu meticulously analyzed and clarified the hidden parts of the ancient sages' teachings to complete the whole picture. Now organized into a book, it represents the research achievements of *Revealing the Secrets and Applications of the Twelve Meridians in the Huangdi Neijing*, capable of benefiting countless people for ten thousand generations. After the publication of this book, colleagues and gentlemen in the TCM field can verify it, promoting the research of meridian theory.

Commentary on the Preface
Daoism is the only religion indigenous to China and the unique health-preserving religion in the world. It is the systematization of the Chinese people's belief in immortals and thoughts of longevity, making the permanent preservation of life, i.e., immortality, its basic doctrine and highest pursuit.
"A Daoist person is one who possesses the Dao and techniques." Yan Shigu of the Tang Dynasty annotated the *Book of Han · Biography of Jing Fang*: "Those who walk the Great Dao are called Daoists." Their bodies and minds follow reason, they follow only the Dao, and engage in affairs according to the Dao, hence called Daoists (*Tai Xiao Lang Shu Jing*). Later generations referred to Daoist persons as those possessing miraculous prescriptions and unusual skills, i.e., the Immortal Masters of the Pre-Qin period.
Zhu Tongyu, a Daoist physician of the Wudang Mountain Daoist Association in Hubei Province, is such a person with miraculous prescriptions and unusual skills. In the true meaning of the phrases in his work *Revealing the Secrets and Applications of the Twelve Meridians in the Huangdi Neijing* regarding cultivating nature and body, he stated that during the practice of swallowing saliva and ingesting Qi, he experienced prenatal breathing (Fetal Breathing). After years of cultivation, he finally realized the true mystery of the operation of the Twelve Meridians. And through refining essence into Qi and operating the Small and Large Heavenly Cycles, he achieved the effect of unity of heaven and humanity in cultivation. This involves the relationship between Qigong and meridians. Traditional Qigong practitioners believe: The discovery and development of meridian theory may be related to Qigong cultivation practice. Because through cultivation, Yuan Qi (Original Qi) is enriched and strengthened; as part of Yuan Qi, Jing Qi circulates within the meridians, appearing lively and powerful, thus perceived by cultivators; some methods further achieve this by concentrating the mind into the Qi Gate, combining reverse observation and inner vision of the body's internal condition—referred to as "inner scenery" in Qigong—which is easier to perceive. Therefore, it can be said that Qigong practitioners discovered and perfected meridian theory through acupuncture and massage. Those holding this view include Li Shizhen of the Ming Dynasty, who emphasized in *Kao Ji Jing Ba Mai* (Examination of the Eight Extraordinary Vessels): "Inner scenic tunnels can only be illuminated by those who reverse-observe; his words must not be erroneous." Recent scholar Yu Chun also advocated in *Zhen Jiu Zhi Nan* (Guide to Acupuncture and Moxibustion): "Those studying acupuncture and moxibustion must first voluntarily practice... static sitting and dynamic methods, then there will be a solid basis for the circulation of meridians and the opening/closing of Qi transformation in the human body, and only then can acupoints be selected along the meridians, with clear vision and understanding." The talk by Doctor Zhu regarding realizing the operation of the Twelve Meridians through cultivating nature and body is undoubtedly correct. It can also be said to have clear vision and understanding.
Furthermore, traditional TCM theory believes that blood, Qi, fluids, and juices circulate in the meridians like a ring without beginning or end, flowing smoothly in cycles. But Li Shizhen quoted Zhang Zi yang's *Ba Mai Kao* saying: "All these eight vessels (Eight Extraordinary Vessels) display Yin Spirit, closed and not open; only immortals (cultivators) use Yang Qi to rush them open, thus achieving the Dao." This refers to the fact that after birth, humans belong to the Post-Heaven stage, where the Post-Heaven Eight Extraordinary Vessels are closed (including the closure mentioned by Zhu regarding Fetal Breathing). Only when cultivators have vigorous internal Qi can they make them pass again. It is believed: If a person can open these two vessels (Ren and Du), then all hundred vessels will be open, naturally circulating throughout the body: "There will be no stagnation or obstruction diseases, and the way of long life and clear vision lies here." The Zhou Tian (Great Cycle) method of Daoist doctors, or perhaps referring to Dan Shu (Alchemical Arts), likely points to this. Generally, the circulation of internal Qi around the Ren and Du vessels is called the Small Zhou Tian, and expanding it to the other Twelve Meridians is called the Large Zhou Tian. Through years of cultivating nature and body, quieting the mind and body, and practicing the Zhou Tian method, Doctor Zhu personally realized the true meaning of the operation of the Twelve Meridians. First, emphasizing that the Twelve Meridians are the functional movements of Yin and Yang opposing each other left and right, or that the movement of the Twelve Meridians presents a "bidirectional positive-negative running rule" opposing left and right, similar to the rotating movement of Taiji Yin and Yang in the Daoist school. The Ren and Du vessels are directly connected and merged, also having different ascending/descending and round-trip functions on the left and right respectively. The Du vessel runs opposite to the Foot Three Yang Meridians, and the Ren vessel runs opposite to the Foot Three Yin Meridians, proving that the movements of these two vessels and the Twelve Regular Meridians are entirely repulsive and attractive reactive forces, supporting the view of the root-knot and flow-injection of the Twelve Meridians.
Second, emphasizing and advocating the combined use of Yingying and Maikou dual pulse diagnosis and its somatic diagnosis operation, aiming to enrich the accuracy and reliability of pulse diagnosis. Third, emphasizing the observation and syndrome differentiation guidance of the bidirectional positive-negative operation of Yin and Yang in the Twelve Meridians for prescription, acupuncture, massage therapies, and clinical case records, and regarding this as the true energy path of life vitality within the human body, etc. These are experiences of advanced age, subject to individual perspectives.
Nowadays, research on meridian theory, and even acupuncture and Qigong disciplines, has actually been devotedly researched by scholars and gentlemen of different nationalities, cultures, and disciplines from ancient times to the present. There are no lack of those who devote their entire energy to one task. For example, in modern research on Qigong principles, there are physiological effects of Qigong, respiratory physiology, cardiovascular physiology, and nervous physiology of Qigong; psychological effects of Qigong, where the sensation of De Qi is a comprehensive effect of psychology and physiology, and Yi Shou (mind focus) is a self-feedback process of the human body; spontaneous Qigong is a psychological compliance and psychological amplification effect; research on group field practice and power-leading reports, and psychological suggestion in external Qi therapy. And biochemical and immune effects of Qigong; as well as biophysical and physical effects of Qigong. Including human infrared radiation, human sound waves, human magnetic fields, human optics, and radiation field effects during the practice process, etc. Exploring the profound and retrieving the sunken is indeed not easy.
Doctor Zhu can use the insight of Daoism to cultivate nature and body, quieting the mind and body. Internally possessing the Zhou Tian method, externally combining traditional medical theory. Observing closely, viewing internally the trajectory of meridians, insightful views on nourishing life, prolonging longevity, and saving the world, these are truly the true words of one school, hoping to be printed.
Respectfully following the poem of Lü Chunyang of the Tang Dynasty:
"Nourish the spiritual root with Essence, nourish the Spirit with Qi;
The principles, methods, formulas, and drugs have true meaning and interest;
Immortals indeed speak clearly.
Opening up to help thousands and millions of people."

Foreword
This poor Daoist was born into a farming family in Beizha Township, Gong'an County, Hubei Province. Because relatives at home were ill, he resolutely self-studied TCM. In the early 1960s, during the process of studying and researching the ancient medical classic *Huangdi Neijing*, he was led into a vast and obscure realm by the intricate routes and branch pathways of the Twelve Meridians, Jingbie (Branch Meridians), Jingjin, meridians, Eight Extraordinary Vessels, etc. According to the text, Huangdi and Qibo were both people who attained the Dao and connected with heaven, thus inventing meridian theory, and the most profound mystery in meridian theory is the "Twelve Meridians." This poor Daoist believes that only through self-cultivation and enlightenment can one understand the truth of the "Twelve Meridians." Therefore, he studied while devoting himself to Daoist cultivation. Not long after cultivation, due to coincidental opportunities, the Ren and Du vessels communicated, and after the Small and Large Zhou Tians opened and operated, he subsequently reached the state of "Fetal Breathing," at which point he finally understood that the human "Twelve Meridians" are functional movements that are bidirectional regarding Yin and Yang, and opposite regarding left and right. Since then, researching "meridian theory" became effortless, and previously difficult problems encountered in study were all solved readily.
To understand the mystery of the "Twelve Meridians" more precisely, he later devoted himself to becoming a monk and cultivating Dao at the holy land of Daoism, Wudang Mountain. While spending over thirty years in concentrated study, he combined the obtained "Twelve Meridians" theory with exploration in clinical diagnosis and treatment, repeatedly applying it to clinical verification, achieving extraordinary curative effects.
Meridian theory is the theoretical core of our ancient sages' profound anatomy, physiology, pathology, and diagnostics of the human body. It is the basic knowledge guiding TCM clinical diagnosis and treatment, and the essence of national medicine. Although many later physicians utilized the Twelve Meridians theory, playing a certain role in clinical application, this poor Daoist believes that if the principle of the "Twelve Meridians" is not understood, the highly efficient regulatory and therapeutic effects possible through the "Twelve Meridians" cannot be exerted, and mistakes are inevitable.
Due to the profundity of the classical Chinese in the *Huangdi Neijing*, coupled with the conservative thoughts of ancient sages and physicians, the truth of the "Twelve" meridians was lost, so the mystery of the operation of the "Twelve Meridians" in the human body remains unsolved to this day. The *Ling Shu Jing* once said: "He who knows the essentials ends in one word; he who does not know the essentials scatters infinitely." This shows that the operation of the "Twelve Meridians" is a very regular and simple principle. Now, in order to dialectically discuss the simple principle of the "Twelve Meridians," this poor Daoist narrates the processes of learning, exploring, diagnosing, and experimenting with the "Twelve Meridians," and reveals all the discovered mysteries and secrets.
Regarding the truth of the Yin-Yang principles of the formless "Twelve Meridians," it is regarded by Daoists as a heavenly secret that cannot be leaked. Therefore, the ancient sages who wrote the *Su Wen* and *Ling Shu* did not explain the principles of the "Twelve Meridians" in detail, only briefly expounding the "positive operational mechanism" of one side of the human body. While hiding the "negative operational mechanism" of the other side, this led many later scholars to be unclear about the complete mechanism of this left-right circular "Twelve Meridians," resulting in a rigid and dogmatic "Meridian Theory." To promote the prosperity of national TCM, enabling it to cooperate with modern high technology for clinical diagnosis and treatment in the future to relieve patients' suffering, this poor Daoist dares to violate the taboos of our Daoist school, contributing the results of discovering and researching the "Twelve Meridians" unreservedly to the cause of human health.
Because the cyclical movement of the "Twelve Meridians" is formless and imageless, the principles described are the "spiritual consciousness experiences" obtained by this poor Daoist over thirty-plus years. Although the principles are concise, the meanings are extremely profound, hoping readers will also carefully observe, silently recognize, and spiritually comprehend. With the limited knowledge level of the author now, it is feared that describing this "truth of the Twelve Meridians," which cannot be seen with eyes nor heard with ears, is difficult. However, what this poor Daoist expresses is a description of "subtle entities of spiritual consciousness." It can only approximate the "truth" of the Twelve Meridians, indeed carrying the regret of being understandable only by intuition but indescribable in words. It is hoped that readers can use the mechanisms and vibration frequencies of the positive and negative movements of the "Twelve Meridians" described later by this poor Daoist as formulaic guidelines to grasp the flourishing and declining energies of the "Twelve Meridians," thereby expanding their practical value in clinical diagnosis and treatment.
