Ping An: The table of contents at the beginning of this volume consists of fifty-four lines. These are completely missing in the Yuan edition and the Japanese separate copy manuscript. I have supplemented them from thirteen sheets obtained by Yang Xingwu from the Ina-dera collection. There are two lines at the end of the directory. The first line contains the three characters "Chong Shen Bing" (Disease during pregnancy), written one indentation higher than the main text; the second line has three missing characters at the top and the four characters "Yu Qibo Yue" (To Qibo, it was said) at the bottom. From this, it can be inferred that the three missing characters at the top should be "Huangdi Wen" (The Yellow Emperor asked). Below the character "Yue" (said), one character is missing, followed by the two characters "You Zhong" (There is a heavy/pregnant body), then five more characters are missing, followed by the two characters "Ci Wei" (This is what), and then one more character is missing. According to the *Suwen · Qibing Lun* (Treatise on Rare Diseases) and the *Jiayi Jing · Furen Zabing* (Women's Miscellaneous Diseases) chapters, the missing character below "Yue" should be "Ren" (person), the five missing characters below "Zhong" should be "Shen Jiuyue Er Yin" (body for nine months and becomes aphonic), and the missing character below "Wei" should be "He" (what). Thus, this line should be restored as "Huangdi wen yu Qibo yue: Ren you chong shen, jiuyue er yin, ci wei he" (The Yellow Emperor asked Qibo, saying: A person is pregnant, and at nine months becomes aphonic, what is this?), which connects perfectly with the character "Bing" (disease) in the subsequent text of this book.
Ping An: This section, from its beginning to its end, appears in Volume 13, Chapter 47 "Qibing Lun" (Treatise on Rare Diseases) of the *Suwen*, and also in Volume 12, Chapter 10 of the *Jiayi Jing*.
The Yellow Emperor asked Qibo, saying: A person is pregnant (Chong Shen), and at the ninth month becomes aphonic (Yin). What is this disease? (This sentence was supplemented from the *Taisu* fragment.) Qibo replied: This is due to the obstruction of the collateral vessels of the uterus (Bao). The Yellow Emperor asked: Why do you say so? Qibo answered: The collateral vessels of the uterus are connected to the Kidney. The Shaoyin (Lesser Yin) meridian passes through the Kidney and connects to the root of the tongue; therefore, speech is impaired. The Yellow Emperor asked: How should it be treated? Qibo replied: No treatment is needed; it will recover naturally in the tenth month. (Note: Pregnancy is also called Chong Shen... [text missing]... belongs to the Bladder... does not specifically refer to women... Now it says the Bao collateral connects to the Kidney, and the Shaoyin meridian connects to the root of the tongue, because the female Bao collateral also connects to the Kidney. Thus, when pregnant for nine months, if the Bao collateral is obstructed, aphonia occurs and speech is lost. By the tenth month, after childbirth, it returns to normal. Ping An: Originally, six characters were missing after "Chong Shen," leaving six spaces blank. The Yuan edition inserted "Bao Luo Mai" (Uterine collateral vessels), which is incorrect. One character was missing after "Pang," leaving one space blank; it should be "Guang." The Yuan edition inserted "Guang Shen Fu" (Kidney and Bladder organs), which is incorrect. One character was missing after "Nvzi" (Woman); the Yuan edition inserted "Shen" (Kidney). The character "Zhi" (to) before "Shiyue" (tenth month) is missing in the Yuan edition. The characters "Jiu Ye" (old state) after "Fu" (recover) are missing in the Yuan edition.) The *Cifa* (Methods of Acupuncture) states: Do not damage what is deficient, nor tonify what is excess, lest you create a pathological condition. (Ping An: "Yi" (tonify/increase) is written as "Yi" (overflow) in the *Jiayi Jing*. "Yi Cheng Zhen" (to form a rash/disease) is written as "Yi Cheng Qi Zhen" in the *Suwen*. In the *Jiayi Jing*, "Zhen" is written as "Gu," with a note stating: "The *Suwen* writes 'Zhen'." The *Suwen* has four additional characters "Ranhou Tiao Zhi" (then regulate it) after "Zhen." The New Correction states: "The *Jiayi Jing* and *Taisu* lack these four characters; they originally belonged to Quan Yuanqi's commentary but were mistakenly included here and should be deleted.") What is meant by "deficient" is emaciation and thinness of the body; in such cases, bi-stone (Bianshi) therapy should not be used. What is meant by "excess" is the presence of palpable masses in the abdomen; applying purgation or draining methods leads to the loss of essence while the pathogenic factor remains dominant in the interior, thus forming a disease. (Emaciation and thinness of the body, further attacked by bi-stone, constitutes damaging the deficient. Palpable masses in the abdomen constitute excess; adding to this excess creates pathology, thereby harming the excess and causing disease. Tonifying excess leads to illness... it is known that excess syndromes are difficult to treat, hence the need for explanation. Ping An: "Zhen Cheng" (disease formed) is written as "Cheng Gu" in the *Jiayi Jing*.)
