The flesh area is where the Qi of the Foot-Yangming channel originates; moxibustion is strictly prohibited, and needling is also not advised. This constitutes the first primary prohibition; therefore, if a carbuncle or ulcer (Yongju) develops here, it is fatal.) The calf muscle area, secondly; ("Fei" sounds like "fei". Chengjin acupoint is also known as Changzhong or Zhichang. The vessel lies in the central depression of this point, where the Qi of the Foot-Yangming and Foot-Taiyang channels originate. Needling is prohibited here, making it a critical area; if a carbuncle or ulcer develops, it is fatal. Ping An: In *Jia Yi Jing*, "Fei" is written as " ", and the four characters "Fei zhe ye" are absent. In *Ling Shu*, " ye" is written as " ye".) The back, thirdly; (From the Shu points at the waist upwards, there are twenty-one vertebrae on both sides called the back. This area is very close to the Zang-Fu organs, with extremely thin skin and flesh. If a carbuncle or ulcer develops and becomes sunken, death is inevitable.) The Shu points of the Five Zang organs, fourthly; (There are twenty-five Shu points corresponding to the Five Zang organs across the Hand and Foot Yin and Yang channels. If a carbuncle or ulcer develops at these Shu points, it is fatal.) The neck region, fifthly; (The anterior part of the neck is called "Jing", and the posterior part is called "Xiang". The Three Yang channels and the Du vessel traverse the Xiang. Therefore, if a carbuncle or ulcer develops in the Xiang, it leads to death.) If a carbuncle or ulcer develops in any of these five areas, it is fatal. (Carbuncles and ulcers cause severe harm; developing in vital areas for sustaining life leads to death.) When the disease begins in the arm, first select the Hand-Yangming and Hand-Taiyin channels to induce sweating; (The following discusses the sequence of selecting vessels for treating febrile diseases. Febrile diseases typically originate in the limbs and head. Thus, when the disease starts in both hands, one may select Shangyang (Jing-Well point of Hand-Yangming), located medially between the thumb and index finger, about the width of a leek leaf from the nail corner, because the Gu Qi of the Hand-Yangming channel is abundant; and Kongzui (Xi-Cleft point of Hand-Taiyin), located seven cun above the wrist crease.) When the disease begins in the head, first select the Foot-Taiyang channel at the neck to induce sweating; (For febrile diseases originating in the head, one may select Tianzhu (Foot-Taiyang) at the neck. Tianzhu is located in the depression lateral to the large tendons behind the hairline at the nape.) When the disease begins in the foot, first select the Foot-Yangming channel to induce sweating. (When the disease starts in the foot, one may select Zusanli (He-Sea point of Foot-Yangming), located three cun below the knee on the lateral aspect of the tibia. Ping An: In *Ling Shu* and *Jia Yi Jing*, " " is written as "Ting".) The Hand-Taiyin channel can be used to induce sweating, (The Hand-Taiyin channel governs Qi, so selecting its points induces sweating. Ping An: In *Ling Shu*, "Chu Han" is written as "Han Chu", same below.) The Foot-Yangming channel can be used to induce sweating. (The Foot-Yangming channel governs water and grain, possessing abundant Qi and Blood, so selecting its points induces sweating.) If excessive sweating occurs after needling Yin channels, stop it by selecting Yang channels; if excessive sweating occurs after needling Yang channels, stop it by selecting Yin channels. (If needling Yin vessels causes unceasing sweating, select points governed by Yang vessels to stop it; if needling Yang vessels causes unceasing sweating, select points governed by Yin vessels to stop it. Ping An: In *Jia Yi Jing*, the two instances of "Yu" are absent.) The harm of needling lies in two aspects: if the needle hits the target but is retained too long, essence and Qi will be depleted; if the needle misses the target and is withdrawn quickly, pathogenic Qi will accumulate. Depletion of essence leads to worsening disease and timidity; accumulation of Qi leads to the formation of carbuncles and ulcers. (The critical dangers of acupuncture are limited to two types: First, if the needle strikes the disease site but manipulation (tonification/reduction) is inappropriate and the needle is not removed promptly, human essence and Qi are drained. Second, if the needle does not strike the disease site and is immediately withdrawn, healthy flesh is injured, causing pathogenic Qi to gather. Depleted essence increases deficiency, leading to severe illness and timidity. , means timidity. Accumulated Qi that does not disperse forms carbuncles or ulcers.)
