The daughter of the Le family in Ning Commandery, just reaching the age of fifteen (Ji Ji), suffered from abdominal distension and pain during the transition between summer and autumn. She experienced mental confusion and oppression, nausea, and vomiting, unable to take food or water. Her limbs were cold with sweating, her body was hot, and she felt thirsty. Palpation revealed a floating pulse that was surging and rapid, and a deep pulse that was wiry and forceful.
This is pathogenic heat-toxins and turbid dampness (Shu Hui) absorbed through the mouth and nose, directly moving to the middle jiao, entering the Mu Yuan (sea of origin). It carries the fire of the Shaoyang Gallbladder upward, causing chest and abdominal pain with vomiting and rebellious qi. The prescription used juice of water caltrop, lotus root, watermelon, and radish, one cup each. Jinyin (Curcuma aromatica Rhizome), Zhishi (Immature Bitter Orange), Muxiang (Vladimiria Root), and Binglang (Areca Seed), each ground to five fen, were administered. After seven doses, she recovered.
The daughter of Wu Ziweng in Wulin, granddaughter-in-law of Lu Dianweng, suffered from latent summerheat disease in the winter of the Dinghai year. She suddenly developed jue ni (cold extremities and loss of consciousness), staring eyes, and unconsciousness. Dianweng urgently summoned me. Upon examination, the pulse was deep, rapid, and forceful, confirming internal closure by summerheat pathogens. As acupuncture could not be performed at night, I urgently pricked the Ten Fingers (Shixuan points) for bleeding, as well as Quchi (LI11) and Renzhong (GV26). The prescription included Shichangpu (Acorus Rhizome), Yujin (Curcuma Longa Rhizome), Zhuli (Bamboo Sap), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum), Huoxiang (Patchouli Herb), and Binglang (Areca Seed). First, eight fen of Zixue Dan (Purple Snow Pill) was mixed and administered. On the next morning, upon re-examination, symptoms recurred as before. Therefore, acupuncture was used: inserting from Yintang (EX-HN3) along the skin to penetrate both Shuaigu (GB8). The patient opened her eyes and perceived pain. I informed her there was no danger. In treating sudden jue (syncope) and pediatric acute convulsive wind, the outcome entirely depends on this point. Whether the needle obtains Deqi (arrival of qi) or not, and whether the patient feels pain upon insertion into the top of the head (Baihui GV20), determines life or death. If insertion into Yintang yields no qi sensation, feeling empty like inserting into tofu; or if insertion into the top of the head causes no pain, even Hua Tuo or Bian Que would find it difficult to revive the patient. After this acupuncture treatment, the patient could speak immediately. The herbal formula still focused on aromatic orifices-opening and spirit-unblocking agents. After several doses, she recovered.
A certain woman, around fifty years old, traveled from Shimen to Hangzhou. It was mid-autumn. Exhausted from the journey, she contracted wind and dew, experiencing slight chills and fever, chest tightness, nausea, constipation, abdominal distension and pain, and inability to eat. This was Yangming dampness stagnation transforming into fire, where body fluids failed to moisten and distribute, leading to failure of intestinal and stomach transmission. Treatment aimed at diffusing and unblocking the fu organs. The prescription used Jiegeng (Platycodon Root), Xingren (Apricot Seed), Huangqin (Scutellaria Root), Huoxiang (Patchouli Herb), Yujin (Curcuma Longa Rhizome), Kouqiao (Tsaoko Cardamom Shell), Shanzhi (Gardenia Fruit), raw Zhishi (Immature Bitter Orange), Yuanmingfen (Mirabilite), added with white honey. After one dose, all ailments resolved.
