The seven-month-old infant surnamed Gu suffered from summer-heat turbidity and food stagnation, presenting with diarrhea and fever. A formula was prescribed using fresh Huoxiang (Agastache Herba), fresh Heye (Nelumbinis Folium), Xiyangshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma Rubra), Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix), Chuanlian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Tiaohuangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Guya (Hordei Fructus Germinatus), Huafen (Trichosanthis Radix), Jineijin (Galli Gigerii Endothelium Corneum), Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma), Yiyuan San (Yi Yuan Powder), Wugu Chong (Bombyx Batryticatus), etc., modified as needed. The condition resolved after regulation. During summer and autumn, many children suffer from diarrhea, ten out of ten cases being due to summer-heat turbidity and food stagnation. I generally apply this method, achieving immediate efficacy in all cases. However, if the cause is spleen deficiency injured by raw or cold fruits and vegetables, this method should not be used as a standard example.
The four-year-old son of Chen Weihe from Jixiang Alley in Hangzhou suffered from diarrhea in mid-autumn, lasting nearly a month. He had not taken any grain for five or six days. Symptoms included abdominal pain, thirst, uncontrolled diarrhea, fever, and coughing, progressing towards Manpi Feng (Slow Spleen Wind) or Shu Zhai (summer-heat consumptive disease). The condition was critical. Upon consultation, I prescribed herbs to clear summer-heat and resolve stagnation: fresh Heye (Nelumbinis Folium), fresh Lugen (Phragmitis Rhizoma), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Muxiang juice, Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Juhong (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Rubrum), Laifuzi (Raphani Semen), Jineijin (Galli Gigerii Endothelium Corneum), Cheqianzi (Plantaginis Semen), and Yiyuan San (Yi Yuan Powder). After two doses, symptoms greatly subsided; diarrhea occurred only two to three times a day, stomach function recovered allowing food intake, and playful behavior returned to normal. However, undigested food remained in stool after meals. Thus, a formula to tonify and regulate the spleen and stomach was adopted, including Xiyangshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma Rubra), Heti (Nelumbinis Petiolus), Fuling (Poria), Jiao Gancao (Carbonized Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Jupi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix), Dongzhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Chao Biandou (Vigna Radiata Seed Prepared by Stir-frying), Shihu (Dendrobii Caulis), Guya (Hordei Fructus Germinatus), Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma), and Wugu Chong (Bombyx Batryticatus). This aimed to nourish stomach yin and raise spleen yang. After several doses, all symptoms resolved. Several days later, re-exposure to summer-heat caused recurrence of diarrhea, fever, cough, and shortness of breath. Treatment focused solely on clearing summer-heat using Heye (Nelumbinis Folium), Lugen (Phragmitis Rhizoma), Bianduanhua (Faba Flos), Xianglian (Coptidis Rhizoma with Aucklandiae Radix), Guya (Hordei Fructus Germinatus), Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma), Yiyuan San (Yi Yuan Powder), and Lüdoupi (Phaseoli Volubilis Testa). After several doses, the patient recovered.
A certain person from outside West Gate of Dinghai, arriving from Shanghai, contracted summer-heat. Heat toxin accumulated internally, causing intense fever, extreme thirst with desire to drink, pulse appearing surging, rapid, full, and large. Tongue coating was thick, yellow, turbid, and greasy. Diarrhea occurred over one hundred times daily, with no food intake. The condition was critical. I stated that summer-heat toxic pathogenic factors were bound in the Yangming channel. Fortunately, the severe diarrhea provided an exit for the pathogens; otherwise, intestinal rotting and gastric corruption would have led to death earlier. Although critical, there was no danger, but astringent or antidiarrheal drugs must not be used. Following Yu Jia Yan’s principle of "treating obstruction with purgatives" (Tong Yin Tong Yong), I prescribed Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) 5 qian, Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) 4 qian, Sheng Gancao (Raw Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) 3 qian, Yinhua (Lonicerae Japonicae Flos) 5 qian, fresh Zhuye (Bambusae Folium) one handful, fresh Heye (Nelumbinis Folium) one leaf, Sheng Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) 5 qian, Yuanmingfen (Natrii Sulfas) 3 qian, and Huafen (Trichosanthis Radix) 4 qian. Decocted in Dijiang water (earth slurry water). After one dose, diarrhea significantly decreased. The next day, it occurred only a few times, and fever subsided. The original formula was administered again, removing Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) and Yuanmingfen (Natrii Sulfas). Such a critical condition was cured in just two doses, with fever receding and diarrhea stopping. Subsequently, the patient recovered through self-nourishment with millet porridge without further medication.
