In treating convulsions (Jing Feng), one must not recklessly use acrid-aromatic agents or cold-cooling medicines, because acrid-aromatics can dissipate Yuan Qi (Original Qi). Cold-coolants instead damage Spleen and Stomach.
If infants cry at night, eyes look upward, and are slightly calm during the day, this is Neidiao (Internal Hooking). It is due to cold pathogen invasion causing abdominal pain, leading to extreme pain where eyes become fixed. Burn Dengxincao (Juncus Effusus) to ash, mix with boiling water and administer Lizhong Wan (Regulate the Middle Pill), pain stops and disease recedes.
If infants cry day and night, stare fixedly at objects, and arch their backs, this is Waidiao (External Hooking). It is due to food stagnation causing pain, body stiffness, and fixed eyes. Use Zaoxintu (Furnace Heart Earth) soaked in boiling water to send down Dingxiang Pi Ji Wan (Clove Spleen Accumulation Pill), disease recedes and pain stops.
If infants suddenly have rapid breathing and rattling phlegm, mouth and eyes normal, limbs not twitching, body without fever, this is sudden exposure to wind-cold, Lung Meridian affected. Take Xiongxie San (Szechuan Lovage and Scorpion Powder) once to resolve.
If infants have abdominal distension, wheezing and fullness, rapid breathing in chest and diaphragm, flaring nostrils, sunken intercostal spaces, open nares, restlessness, cough with thirst, hoarse voice, copious phlegm obstruction, constipation and urinary retention, this is Mapi Feng (Horse Spleen Wind). If not rescued urgently, or if symptoms are unrecognized, death occurs within the day. First use Niuhuang Duoming San (Calculus Bovis Snatching Life Powder) to purge, then use Baihu Tang (White Tiger Decoction) to pacify.
If infants rotate fingers, eyes slightly staring straight, this is Baihu Syndrome (White Tiger Syndrome). But body is not hot, limbs not spasming, take earth from the "White Deer Formula" of the current year, soak in water to make soup, swallow Suhexiang Wan (Styrax Pill).
If infants spit yellow-white foam, face changes color, rapid breathing and abdominal pain, rolling and spasming, appearance similar to convulsion, but eyes do not roll up, this is caused by weak spirit and sleep, external pathogenic qi, sudden contact. Named Ke Chu Syndrome (Guest Pestle Syndrome). First examine left and right sides of the upper palate for small blisters, break them urgently. Then dissolve Suhexiang Wan in ginger soup and take externally fumigate with Jiangxiang (Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum) and Zaojiao (Gleditsiae Fructus)! Next, take Dan Dou Chi (Prepared Soybean) 3 he, soak in water, mash into a ball the size of a chicken egg, rub on infant's fontanelle and both soles five to six times, then rub umbilicus for a long time, pat open any hair, and discard.
If infants have chronic cough, abdominal distension with wheezing, high chest and rebellious Qi, eyes looking upward, limbs pulling, this is named Guixiong (Turtle Chest), a Heat syndrome. But body has no fever, treat with Tingli Wan (Descurainia Seed Pill) (formula see Cough section).
The above symptoms all resemble convulsions. Do not treat uniformly. Mistreatment may endanger life.
