In the 1970s, I treated a thirteen-year-old boy whose urticaria (urticaria) was widespread on his chest, back, and limbs. The symptoms were mild in the morning, worsened in the afternoon, and were most severe at night. He had been taking Western medicine for over a month, but the rash had not subsided. His parents invited me to treat him with acupuncture. Seeing the emaciated child, I felt compassion. Although I did not specialize in tuina massage, I reluctantly tried Master Ma Xiutang’s acupoint pressing massage method. I selected three acupoints: Quchi (LI11), Xuehai (SP10), and Zusanli (ST36). Using my thumb or index finger, I pressed firmly on each acupoint, applied appropriate pressure, and then rotated my finger clockwise or counterclockwise in place. Each acupoint was treated one hundred times, once daily. After two days, the occurrence of wheals gradually became sparse. After approximately one week of treatment, the rash disappeared and he recovered.
Discussion on Experimental Treatment of Diseases with Qigong
The rise of qigong in China has a long history. Its efficacy in health preservation, strengthening the body, preventing disease, and treating illness is significant. Today, qigong masters emerge in great numbers, responding to the needs of the times. Some can emit qi from thousands of miles away, instantly relieving pain; others apply their gong within a cup of water, instantly eliminating critical illnesses. With eloquent discourse, those present are influenced, benefiting through jumping and shouting; with slow manipulation of palms, patients are affected by their subtle mechanisms, knowing diseases through remote sensing and visualization. Thus, people are astonished, consider it miraculous, regard it as divine, and view it with wonder. However, in society and among academics, discussions are heated, with both praise and criticism. Having only slightly entered the realm of qigong without penetrating its depths, I am not qualified to judge its merits or faults. I merely recount my personal experiences, briefly outlining several points to record these events.
(I)
One day in early summer 1994, due to excessive cooling in my consulting room, I suddenly experienced head distension, nasal congestion, aversion to cold, and limb discomfort. I realized this was an initial contraction of cold pathogenic factors, with the evil still at the exterior level. If the pathogen could be expelled outward, the common cold could be avoided. Coincidentally, Mr. Shu, an expert in qigong education and practice, visited. I immediately asked him to regulate and treat my condition. Master Shu was deeply knowledgeable about therapeutic qigong methods. He formulated a qigong exercise plan for me and emitted qi. First, he applied the "Divine One-Handed Grab" technique to the Dazhu (BL11), Fengmen (BL12), and Feishu (BL13) acupoints to remove pathogenic qi. After dozens of grabs, he used his sword finger to strike up and down repeatedly to disperse residual pathogens. Following dozens more repetitions, he rubbed his palms until extremely hot and pressed them onto Feishu and Fengmen, a method called "Demon Palm Therapy." The entire process lasted twenty minutes. Upon completion, Master Shu was sweating profusely, while I felt that the exterior syndrome had resolved and my qi flowed smoothly.

One day, upon arriving home after work, my neighbor Mr. Zhang shouted loudly, urging me to come quickly. As soon as I entered his house, I saw his eldest son kneeling on the floor, crying out in pain. Inquiry revealed that since lunch that day, he had suffered from intermittent abdominal pain that gradually intensified, feeling like twisting and cutting. He went to the Labor Insurance Hospital for treatment, receiving a bottle of liquid medicine and several packs of pills, all analgesics. By midday, he had taken most of the medication, but the pain persisted. Curling up on the floor provided slight relief. The young man, nearing twenty years of age and of robust build, would not have acted this way unless the pain was severe. I instructed him to lie supine on the bed. After examination, I considered it left lower quadrant intestinal spasm and attempted treatment with qigong. First, I applied the "Divine One-Handed Grab" for five minutes. The patient's groaning gradually ceased, and he reported relief from pain. Then, I used the sword finger to dispel pathogenic qi, and finally used palm hovering to nourish his qi and blood. The total treatment time was ten minutes. The patient no longer felt significant pain, so I concluded the session. Hours later, the abdominal pain completely resolved.

Teacher Fang, a woman of intelligence and capability, served as manager of a secondary production unit in a government organ after retirement. Like an old warhorse stabled, or a martyr in his twilight years, she worked with double the usual enthusiasm and achieved remarkable results. Unfortunately, just as she was full of ambition, the demon of illness secretly invaded. When discovered, it was late-stage gastric cancer. There was obstruction in the throat, making eating difficult. Chemotherapy was ineffective. A tube was inserted into her intestine, and liquid diet was infused. Her epigastric region was distended, full, painful, and bloated, with frequent vomiting of phlegm-saliva and gastric juice. She was emaciated, with a dull and depressed demeanor. Visiting many famous doctors yielded no miracle cure. Reluctantly, she consulted me. She stated that if only her suffering could be alleviated and life extended, she would be satisfied. Seeing that the patient's primordial qi (Yuan Qi) was already damaged and the pathogenic evil rampant, I saw no possibility of recovery. Originally, I should not have offered help or medicine, but unable to ignore her intense desire to live and her pitiful pleading, I reluctantly prescribed a modified Xuanfu Daizhe Tang (Inula and Hematite Decoction). Fortunately, after taking it, her vomiting gradually stopped, the obstruction eased, she could take liquid food, and bowel movements resumed. Consequently, her spirit improved daily, and vitality increased. At this time, a qigong master came to Shanghai. Mr. Fang treated him with the courtesy of a distinguished guest and requested him to emit qi for treatment. Immediately after the first session, the patient suddenly felt qi flowing between the esophagus and stomach, descending step by step into the abdomen. Her upper epigastrium felt relaxed, and she could lie flat immediately. Truly, the disease retreated as the hand arrived; her skill was divine. A plan was formulated: emit qi twice daily for ten consecutive days, and stop all other medications. Naturally, taking my remaining herbs was prohibited. On the fourth day of qigong treatment, the patient felt unable to endure further, lay stiffly in bed, and refused to cooperate. After ten days of sessions, Fang was barely breathing, with only wandering qi remaining. Her husband urgently summoned me. Seeing this state, I was horrified. The patient's primordial qi had dissipated, and the situation was hopeless. Why use medicine! I told her husband directly: The patient is in the terminal stage and will pass away soon, likely within three to four days.
Commentary: The qigong emitted by this master indeed possesses the power to move qi, relieve depression, dissipate nodules, and direct rebellious qi downward. However, the patient's disease had penetrated to the interior organs (gao huang), her primordial qi had dissipated, and the pathogenic evil was rampant. The approach to treatment required boldness combined with caution, wisdom combined with integrity, adaptability, and careful conduct. The reason the practitioner's efforts nearly failed was ignorance of this principle. Thus, while acknowledging that qigong indeed has certain therapeutic capabilities, it is unfortunate that many practitioners lack adequate medical literacy. Often, they achieve the opposite of their intent, intending to save life but hastening death. Therefore, those aspiring to heal others must, besides practicing qigong, diligently study medical texts and deeply understand medical principles.
