Treats latent heat in the Lower Jiao (Lower Burner), qi rebellion with interrupted flow, obstruction of urination and defecation, and uncontrollable vomiting, named Zoubu (Running to Feed).
Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Weirui (Polygonatum Rhizoma), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Fuling (Poria), each 3 qian; Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Jupi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Sheng Lugen (Fresh Phragmitis Rhizome), Zhizi Ren (Gardeniae Semen), each half liang; Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum) 1 liang.
The above are cut into coarse powder. Take 4 qian per dose, add 1.5 zhan of water, decoct to 0.7 portion, remove dregs, and take warm.
Treats dry heaving, vomiting without belching/reversal, less heat and more cold, preference for spitting clear saliva and white foam, belching with acid regurgitation, caused by obstruction of the Upper Jiao (Upper Burner).
Noupo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex, ginger-processed), Bai Fuling (Poria), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Xuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix), Wuzhuyu (Evodiae Fructus, washed with hot water), each half liang; Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix), Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, roasted, skin and umbilicus removed), Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Jupi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), each 3 qian 3 fen.
The above are cut into coarse powder. Take 4 da qian per dose, add 1.5 zhan of water and 5 slices of fresh ginger, decoct to 0.7 portion, remove dregs, and take warm.
Treats vomiting where the pathology is located above the diaphragm; desire for water indicates that the disease is about to resolve.
Zhuling (Polyporus), Bai Fuling (Poria), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), in equal proportions.
The above three ingredients are powdered. Administer one fangcun bi (a square-inch measure) with water.
Those who vomit first and then feel thirsty indicate that the disease is about to resolve; those who feel thirsty first and then vomit have water retention in the heart region, belonging to Yinjia (Fluid Retention Syndrome). Additionally, if vomiting occurs after recovery from Shanghan (Cold Damage) due to residual heat in the stomach, treat according to post-Shanghan patterns; if weakness in the legs and spleen pain accompany vomiting, this is Xianggangjiao (Beriberi) attacking internally, and urgent treatment should follow the Xianggangjiao category; furthermore, nausea and vomiting during pregnancy (Ezu) should also be treated according to their respective categories. If vomiting is caused by poisoning, use detoxifying herbs; if a wine drinker vomits, use antidotes for intoxication. As for Zoubu vomiting caused by leakage of qi from the Three Jiao (Triple Burner), see the preceding section; for diarrhea, see the Xieli (Diarrhea) section, each following its own category. However, do not lightly use purgatives for vomiting; only when abdominal fullness is present, observe which orifice (anterior or posterior) is obstructed, and unblocking it will lead to cure.
Yue (Hiccups) refers to hiccuping, called Yue in ancient formulas. It often occurs after vomiting and diarrhea. Generally, excess in the Stomach leads to belching, while deficiency in the Stomach leads to Yue. This is due to deficiency-cold in the Stomach and heat above the diaphragm. Sometimes it continues for eight or nine sounds, with inability to retrieve breath, even startling observers. If this occurs in prolonged Shanghan disease, it is very ominous, referred to as Huai Fu (Damaged Viscera) in the Neijing. Yang Shangshan explained: Leakage of fluids is like knowing a salt vessel is leaking; hoarseness is like knowing a lute string is breaking; falling leaves are like knowing a dead tree is collapsing. By comparing these subtle signs of decay to Yue, we know it is a sign of deep-seated disease. There are also cases of Yue accompanied by hardness and stuffiness below the heart, dizziness, and palpitations, caused by phlegm-fluid retention between the diaphragm; other diseases have their respective treatments.
