Treats body heat and headache caused by Shanghan (Cold Damage), as well as phlegm cough and hemoptysis due to wind obstruction.
Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Gange (Puerariae Lobatae Radix), Qingpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix, stir-fried), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) (each 3 fen); Gancao (Licorice Root, honey-fried, 0.5 liang); Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma, processed, 1 qian 3 zhu).
Grind the above into fine powder. Take 2 qian per dose, add one zhan of water, three slices of fresh ginger, and two jujubes. Decoct until reduced to 70% volume, take orally in one go. For Shanghan cases, add several grains of Chidou (Sojae Preparata Semen) and decoct together; take hot for significant effect, at any time. In the Guiwei year of Chongning era, Mi Fu served as Taichang Boshi (Director of Ceremonial). When he began attending morning court waiting duties, he contracted illness from exposure to cold. He suffered from severe phlegm cough resembling glue and hemoptysis. Three physicians failed to resolve it. One day, he visited Taiwei Cai Yuandu, obtained a packet of Renshen San (Ginseng Powder) along with jujubes as an adjuvant. Upon returning home, his guest, Chengyilang Xue Dao, stayed for a meal. After the medicine was prepared, he took one dose. After a while, the phlegm cough stopped immediately. The guest remarked in surprise: "Your complexion has instantly improved. What medicine is this?" Mi Fu explained the circumstances. Seeking the prescription from Lord Cai, another packet was sent. Three days later, the illness was completely cured, and he went to see Lord Cai. Lord Cai said: "This is the prescription of Sengjia." During the Yuanfeng era, Liu Shiyan, Prefect of Sizhou, suffered from an illness for eight days without sweating. His daughter earnestly sought the Sengjia prescription. She dreamed that night that Sengjia told her: "Take the medicine from the pagoda tomorrow." Thus, she obtained this medicine from the Great Sage's alms bowl. The seal read: "Taipingzhou Yang Family Renshen San." Currently, the Imperial Medical Bureau also sells it, but it lacks Gancao and Gange, and does not specify dosages; I suspect it is not the authentic prescription.
Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, soaked in rice washing water), Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba, nodes removed), Jingjie (Schizonepetae Herba) (each 2 liang); Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum, 3 liang); Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, 0.5 liang); Gualougen (Trichosanthis Radix), Gange (Puerariae Lobatae Radix), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Gancao (Licorice Root) (each 1 liang).
Grind the above into fine powder. Take 2 qian per dose, add one and a half zhan of water, three slices of fresh ginger, and three cun of scallion white. Decoct until reduced to 70% volume, take before meals.
Xionghuang (Realgar).
Grind into fine powder, mix with water to form a paste. Dip a brush thickly and apply inside the nasal cavities. Sleep in the same bed as the patient without contracting the disease. Apply after washing the face in the morning and before going to bed at night. Epidemic patients' homes naturally generate foul qi; inhaling it causes invasion into the Shangyuan Palace (upper origin/head region), dispersing the hundred vessels and causing this illness. It is best to use a paper twist to stimulate sneezing in the nose; if Xionghuang is applied to the nose, the foul odor will not be perceived. This also effectively wards off various nightmares.
