(This formula is used to) ward off epidemic qi so that one remains uninfected, and to ward off warm diseases (Wenbing) and cold damage (Shanghan).
Rhubarb Root (Dahuang), Platycodon Root (Jiegeng), Sichuan Pepper (Chuanjiao), Atractylodes Rhizome (Baizhu), Cinnamon Twig (Guixin) (each 1 liang 8 fen), Smilax Glabra Rhizome (Baqia) (1 liang 2 qian), Aconite Root (Wutou) (processed, skin and tip removed, 6 qian).
The above ingredients are crushed into a coarse powder. Place in a sewn cloth bag, suspend in the middle of the day on the last day of the twelfth lunar month deep in a well until it reaches the mud. On the morning of the first day of the first lunar month, take out the medicine, place it in wine, boil for several boils, and drink it in an east-facing room. Start with a small amount; the quantity can be adjusted according to one's condition. Another version includes Saposhnikovia Root (Fangfeng) 1 liang.
Ward off warm qi.
Realgar (Xionghuang), Sheep Horn (Yangjiao) (burned), Orpiment (Cihuang) (each 2 liang), Alum (Fan Shi) (calcined), Ghost Feather Arrow (Guiyujian) (each 0.5 liang).
The above ingredients are ground into a fine powder. Take 1 liang, place in a sewn cloth bag, wear it at the heart area, and hang it on the door. If encountering a major epidemic year, on the first day of each month, use a green cloth bag to hold one dao gui of powder, burn it in the central courtyard; for patients with warm diseases, fumigate them with the smoke as well.
Treats cold damage (Shanghan), warm epidemics (Wenyi), wind-dampness, headache with dizziness and blurred vision, pain in the four limbs, aversion to cold with high fever, stiffness of the neck, eye pain, common wind-induced vertigo and spasms, and wind-phlegm. It is suitable for all these conditions.
Notopterygium Root (Qianghuo), Angelica Pubescens Root (Duhuo), Ginseng Radix (Renshen), Licorice Root (Gancao) (honey-fried), Bupleurum Root (Chaihu), Peucedanum Root (Qianhu), Poria (Fuling), Aurantium Fructus (Zhike) (bran-fried), Szechwan Lovage Rhizome (Chuanxiong), Platycodon Root (Jiegeng) (equal parts).
The above ingredients are crushed into a coarse powder. For each dose, take 4 qian bi, add one zhan of water, three slices of ginger, and five leaves of mint. Decoct until reduced to seven-tenths, strain, and take hot. If cold pathogen predominates, take it very hot; if heat pathogen predominates, take it warm. For injury by dampness, add Atractylodes Rhizome (Baizhu); for foot pain, add Gastrodia Tuber (Tianma). This formula, if made into a fine powder, can also be taken as a paste or mixed with liquid. Chu Yushi investigated the origin of this formula and found it in the Daoist Canon (Daozang). The preface states: "Unless one is an extraordinary person whose will and spirit converge, no one would dare to create it. This is truly worthy of admiration." In miasmic regions, or during the prevalence of warm epidemics, or where there are many people with wind, phlegm, or qi disorders, or those living in low-lying damp areas suffering from weak legs, this medicine is indispensable. People of the world do not follow ancient methods, thus seeking novelty, and are blinded by vulgar learning; therefore, I elaborate on it here. This medicine treats Hong Kong foot (a term for severe tinea pedis or gouty arthritis presenting with swelling and redness) with downward flow, heat, redness, and swelling. Add Rhubarb Root (Dahuang) the size of a chess piece, decoct, and take two doses together for immediate effect.
