When the Kidney organ is excess and injured by Yang toxins, it presents with cutting pain in the waist and hypochondrium, inability to turn or move, constipation of stool and difficulty in urination, lower abdominal distension, diarrhea after eating cold food, and a dark, smoky complexion.
Evodia Fruit (Wuzhuyu), Black Morning Glory Seed (Heiqianniu) [stir-fried], Peach Kernel (Taoren) [skin and tip removed], Dioscorea Hypoglauca Rhizome (Bixie), Rhubarb (Dahuang), Eucommia Bark (Duzhong) [skin removed, cut, stir-fried with ginger juice until fibers break].

Before the Spring Equinox and after the Autumn Equinox, when the weather should be clear and cold, if suddenly warm qi invades, the people will suffer from Warm Epidemic; after the Spring Equinox and before the Autumn Equinox, when the weather should be damp-heat, if suddenly cold and clear qi invades, the people will suffer from Cold Epidemic. Treatment methods differ for each, and one must not rigidly adhere to days to decide on sweating or purging therapies. Here, based on formula theory, we distinguish them as one category split into types. Since there are Cold and Warm epidemics, Wind-Dampness should also be discussed. For example, in the Jiwei year, a major epidemic occurred in the capital; those treated with sweating died, those treated with purging died, but those who took Wuling San recovered. There was no other reason; this was a Damp Epidemic. Use this as a method: every year when encountering abnormal qi, record and apply it accordingly. Suppose winter should be cold but has occasional warm qi; then spring will surely see Warm Epidemic. Suppose spring should be warm but has cool qi; then summer will surely see Dry Epidemic. Suppose summer should be hot but has cold qi invading; then autumn will surely see Cold Epidemic. Suppose autumn should be clear but has excessive rain; then winter will surely see Damp Epidemic. This is deduced along the same path, but one must still weigh the season carefully and not be biased. Moreover, the rise of epidemics may be due to unclogged ditches where filth and foul air steam and accumulate; or due to dead qi in the land accumulating and erupting; or due to officials' injustice and oppression causing resentment to condense. What the world calls Prison Warmth, Injury Warmth, Tomb Warmth, Temple Warmth, Earth God Warmth, Mountain Warmth, Sea Warmth, Home Warmth, Stove Warmth, Year Warmth, Heaven Warmth, Earth Warmth, etc., must not be ignored. Ancient methods to ward off these include Tusu Wine, Wuchengzi Yinghuo Pill, Li Zijian Shagui Decoction, and Laojun Shenming Powder, all of which are apotropaic methods. Only Liu Gen's separate transmission records that at the Tai Sui Liuhe position of the prefectural government, one should dig a pit three chi deep and wide, fill it with three hu of clean sand, pour three sheng of pure wine over it, and have an envoy pray and chant; this is also an excellent technique to eliminate epidemic qi. The so-called Tai Sui Liuhe refers to the location where the annual qi leaks, hence used for suppression and exorcism.
