Fuyuan Dan (Restoring the Original Pill)
Indicated for edema. The true fire of the Heart and Kidney generates the true earth of the Spleen and Stomach. Now, due to deficiency of the true fire's qi, it fails to nourish the true earth; thus, earth fails to control water, leading to erratic movement of fluid metabolism. The Sanjiao (Triple Burner) fails to drain, qi and vessels become obstructed, and the pivot mechanism is blocked. Symptoms include panting and urgency, overflowing water qi leaking into meridians, fullness and swelling of the limbs and skin, particularly severe in the lower legs and shins, swelling under both eyes, coldness between the thighs, bitter taste in the mouth and dry tongue, hardness and distension of the heart and abdomen, inability to lie flat on the back (lying flat induces coughing), urinary obstruction, false fright in dreams, and inability to rest peacefully.
Preparation: Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Lateral Root, 2 liang), Nanmuxiang (Southern Costus Root, baked), Huixiang (Fennel Fruit, stir-fried), Chuanjiao (Sichuan Pepper, stir-fried until oil exudes), Duhuo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix), Houpo (Magnolia Bark, peeled, sliced, processed with ginger juice), Doukou (Cardamom Seed, baked), Binglang (Areca Seed).

Subsequently, add the following herbs according to the patient's deficiency or excess. (Treatments for water qi often employ purgatives; however, this formula does not contain harsh drugs such as Daji, Gansui, or Yuanhua, making it safe for anyone to take.)
