Regulate Ying and Wei (Nutritive and Defensive Qi), unblock the blood vessels, facilitate the Sanjiao (Triple Burner), and harmonize the Five Zang Organs. It treats various conditions of Qi stagnation and obstruction, distension in the chest and diaphragm, vomiting, poor appetite, and stabbing pain radiating to the shoulders and back. It also addresses rapid breathing with phlegm cough, puffy face and eyes, swelling of the four limbs, constipation, and dark urine. It is indicated for excessive worry, palpitations, depression and accumulation, rheumatic gout, clustered swelling and pain, and restless distension and urgency in breathing.
Chenpi (Tangerine Peel, peeled of white pith, 1 jin) Qingpi (Green Tangerine Peel, peeled of white pith) Zisu (Perilla Leaf, skin and stem removed) Gancao (Licorice Root) Houpo (Magnolia Bark, coarse bark removed, processed with ginger juice) Xiangfu (Cyperus Rhizome, coarse bark removed, not exposed to fire) Dongguazhi (Winter Melon Seed, heart removed) Renshen (Ginseng Root, radix removed) Baishao (White Peony Root) Chuanbaizhi (Angelica Dahurica Root) (each 2 liang) Banxia (Pinellia Tuber, 1 liang, washed with water decoction). All are cut into pieces. Take 4 qian per dose, add 1.5 cups of water, 3 slices of fresh ginger, and 2 red dates. Decoct until reduced to 0.7 cup, strain, and take hot. For headache due to Shanghan (Cold Damage), [add] Renxue (Human Blood?).
It treats men and women with heat above and deficiency below, caused by overeating damaging the Spleen and Stomach, or excessive alcohol and sexual activity depleting Kidney Yuan (Original Qi). The failure of Water and Fire to interact leads to blockage, causing Qi to fail in ascending and descending. Heat above causes dizziness and vertigo of the head and eyes, vomiting due to phlegm-fullness, discomfort in the chest and diaphragm, dry throat, and loss of taste. Deficiency below results in weakness of the waist and legs, constipation, tenesmus, and cold pain in the umbilical and abdominal region. If treated with cooling herbs, the Spleen Qi becomes weak, leading to borborygmus and diarrhea; if treated with warming herbs, it causes congestion-heat in the Upper Jiao, sores on the mouth and tongue, upward attack of gout, and chronic dysentery that does not heal. One should first take this medicine, then treat with the specific indicated formula. It is also effective for generalized heat and sore throat.
