The *Huoren Shu* states: Wind and rain invade the body's deficiency; steam and vapor from mountains and marshes cause people to contract dampness. When dampness flows into the joints, it causes bodily restlessness and pain; a deep and slow pulse indicates dampness contraction.
Generally, complications from dampness contraction are myriad. Those accompanied by wind present as irritability, heat, wandering pain, and stiffness; those combined with cold present as pain and edema; when combined with both wind and cold, they form Bi syndrome. All arise from initial dampness contraction followed by the addition of other pathogenic factors. The treatment for dampness should not involve heavy sweating, nor should fire therapy be used; rather, one should promote urination to drain dampness.
