The Suwen states: The three months of winter are called "closing and storing." Water freezes and earth cracks; do not disturb the Yang Qi. Sleep early and rise late, waiting for sunlight. This implies avoiding cold and seeking warmth. If one fails to regulate life properly and is exposed to pathogens, sudden dizziness, locked jaw with loss of voice, stiff limbs, or aversion to cold with shivering, or slight fever, red face with excessive sweating may occur. Generally, pulse in Zhonghan (Cold Strike) must be slow and tight; if accompanied by wind, the pulse is floating with dizziness and numbness; if combined with dampness, the pulse is soggy with swelling and pain. The treatment method...
Furthermore, it is discussed: Humans live between heaven and earth, relying on Qi and Blood for vitality. Thus, heaven does not have a year without cold and heat changes, nor does a human have a day without worry and suffering. Hence, there are diseases such as Shanghan (Cold Damage) and Tianxing Wenyi (Epidemic Febrile Diseases). Winter is the qi of killing and harshness. Gentlepeople who are good at preserving health should protect their bodies meticulously during severe cold, whether walking, standing, sitting, or lying down, so as not to be invaded by cold toxins. Those who run hard carrying heavy loads or engage in excessive sexual activity are merely laborers. When Yang Qi should be stored but is instead disturbed, it stagnates and disperses in the Couli (pores/skin interstices), fluids force their way out, and are pressed by cold. The skin and Couli become dense, and cold toxin mixes with Ying and Wei (Nutritive and Defensive Qi). At this time, the strong recover as Qi moves, while the weak develop disease. Those who do not fall ill immediately harbor cold qi between muscles and bones; in spring, they develop Wenbing (Warm Diseases); in summer, they develop Rebing (Heat Diseases). All are caused by the same qi mechanism.
Ancient treatment methods: First, if pathogen is in the skin, apply ointment and moxa; second, if in the flesh, needle according to method, release muscle and disperse, cure with sweating; third, if in muscle, induce sweat again to cure; fourth, if in chest, induce vomiting; fifth, if in abdomen; sixth, if in stomach, purge downwards. These are Hua Tuo's treatment methods. Regarding transmission via Three Yin and Three Yang, nothing exceeds Zhang Zhongjing's writings. Treating Shanghan has its laws; treating miscellaneous diseases has its formulas. Formulas for miscellaneous diseases can vary with transmission, but regulating Shanghan must follow fixed laws. This will not be repeated here. Now, summarizing the four seasons, the general medication is as follows.
Spring: Wind-cold causes headache, fever, and body stiffness/pain. Xiangsu San (Fragrant Perilla Powder) or Shishen Tang (Ten Divine Decoction) are suitable. To induce sweating, add Congbai (Allii Fistulosi Bulbus), Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens), and Chi (Fermented Soybean) and decoct.
Summer: Wind-heat causes headache, fever, body ache, restlessness, and thirst. Wuling San (Five-Ingredient Powder with Poria) is suitable, or decoct Congbai (Allii Fistulosi Bulbus) tea for administration.
Autumn: Wind-cold causes fever, headache, nasal congestion, and cough. Jinfeicao San (Boiling Herb Powder) is suitable.
Winter: Exposure to wind-cold causes fever, headache, absence of sweat, and aversion to cold. Wuji San (Five Accumulations Powder) is suitable.
The above formulas are recorded in the Heji Jufang (Formulary of the Bureau of Medical Relief).
