The various deficiencies and damages mentioned in medical classics, and the five damages mentioned in Nan Jing, are essentially damage caused by deficiency. Su Wen states: "When the mind is tranquil and empty, true qi follows; when spirit is kept within, how can disease arise?" If one can emulate the purity of Dao and keep the spirit within, disease will not arise, thus understanding the way of consolidating health. Neglecting self-care, or engaging in sexual intercourse before recovery from major illness, or exhausting muscles and sinews, irregular eating habits, overusing mental energy, or shouting causing qi dispersion, leading to deficiency and damage of Ying and Wei, resulting in myriad diseases; or hematemesis, epistaxis, hematochezia, melena, spermatorrhea, leukorrhea, cold sliding, projectile diarrhea, night sweats, spontaneous sweating, tidal fever, fever, vomiting, coughing up phlegm and saliva, etc., these accumulate from minor factors to become damage, and accumulated damage leads to decline. Moreover, women after childbirth, especially after major illness, suffer severe deficiency and damage. The treatment method requires detailed examination of pulse patterns, tracing the origin, and treating according to syndrome differentiation. However, syndromes vary, so a few examples are listed as key points for comprehensive treatment.
Furthermore: Humans are born with balanced qi, and if they can preserve their Yuan Qi, why worry about disease? Those who do not know how to care for themselves allow thoughts to exhaust their wisdom and desires to disturb their truth. Once Ying and Wei are deficient, minor accumulations become damage, and accumulated damage leads to decline. When ill, they cannot control qi to protect the body, nor can they take medicine to prolong life. The Sages said: "Treat disease before it arises, not after; govern chaos before it occurs, not after." If disease has already formed and then medication is used, or chaos has already occurred and then governance is applied, is it not too late? For anyone suffering from deficiency and damage, is it not necessary to tonify early, offering hope for longevity? The formulas below contain herbs with mild tonifying properties, gentle without being excessive, specific without being mixed. Occasionally, herbs are combined in groups, ensuring balance between rigid and gentle, with appropriate assistants and guides, to achieve efficacy. Ancients warned against using Fuzi alone, fearing kidney dryness. Since a rigid formula is desired for quick effect, a gentle formula should be used to moderate its rigidity, achieving balance, ensuring rapid efficacy without later complications. Formulas like Shenfu, Chenfu, Rongfu, and Fufang are examples. For syndromes of extreme yang deficiency and yin excess, formulas like Jiangfu Sanjian Dan may be used, with ascending or descending assistants, aiming for more rigid than gentle, avoiding excessive upward flare-up, emphasizing steady medication.
