For example: Zhang XX, female, 12 years old. Involuntary movements of the hands and feet, unsteady gait, grimacing for over 5 months. Diagnosed with chorea at a certain hospital. Treatment with Chinese medicine to calm the liver and extinguish wind (Ping Gan Xi Feng), nourish blood and resolve phlegm (Yang Xue Hua Tan), as well as Western medicine and acupuncture, was ineffective. At the time of consultation, besides continuous involuntary movements, consciousness was basically normal, sighing was frequent, tongue coating was white, and pulse was wiry and fine (Xian Xi). Synthesizing the pulse and symptoms, it was diagnosed as a disease caused by pathogenic factors invading the Shaoyang channel (Shao Yang Jing), internal stagnation of phlegm-heat (Tan Re Nei Yu), and wind pathogen stirring internally. Therefore, Chai Hu Jia Long Gu Mu Li Tang (Bupleurum Decoction with Dragon Bone and Oyster Shell) was prescribed with modifications: Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix) 3g, Gui Zhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus) 6g, Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) 6g, Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix) 6g, Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) 6g, Dang Shen (Codonopsis Radix) 6g, Fu Ling (Poria) 6g, Sheng Long Gu (Fossilia Ossis Mastodi) 6g, Sheng Mu Li (Concha Ostreae) 6g, Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) 6g, Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) 2 slices, Da Zao (Jujubae Fructus) 2 pieces. After 3 doses, symptoms decreased; after 30 doses, complete recovery was achieved.
Another case: Suo XX, female, 55 years old. Over two months ago, sudden stiffness and discomfort in the left half of the body appeared, followed by involuntary movements and grimacing the next day. Diagnosed with chorea caused by cerebral arteriosclerosis at a certain hospital. Initial treatment with Western medicine was ineffective, and subsequent treatment with formulas to calm the liver, extinguish wind, tonify qi, and invigorate blood also yielded no results. Upon consultation, the patient was conscious, with continuous involuntary movements of the left upper and lower limbs, grimacing, difficulty in movement, headache, dizziness, irritability, insomnia, palpitations, tinnitus, deafness, bitter taste in the mouth, dry mouth, yellowish-white tongue coating, and wiry pulse. Therefore, Chai Hu Jia Long Gu Mu Li Tang (Bupleurum Decoction with Dragon Bone and Oyster Shell) was prescribed: Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix) 9g, Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) 9g, Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix) 9g, Dang Shen (Codonopsis Radix) 9g, Gui Zhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus) 9g, Fu Ling (Poria) 9g, Jiu Jun (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma processed with wine) 4g, Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) 6g, Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) 3 slices, Sheng Long Gu (Fossilia Ossis Mastodi) 15g, Sheng Mu Li (Concha Ostreae) 15g, Da Zao (Jujubae Fructus) 5 pieces. After 7 consecutive doses, all symptoms decreased; after 14 doses, involuntary movements disappeared; after 30 doses, all activities returned to normal.
In the development of traditional Chinese medicine, there have been instances where the Jing Fang (Classical Formula) school denied the Shi Fang (Contemporary Formula) school, and vice versa, with the latter being more common. Their argument is that later generations are more advanced than earlier ones. I believe that scientific development cannot be defined merely by rigid frameworks but must be tested through repeated practice. Both Jing Fang and Shi Fang represent different aspects of development; it is simplistic to label one as correct and the other as incorrect.
Distension Abdomen (Gu Zhang)
Liver cirrhosis with ascites corresponds to Distension Abdomen (Gu Zhang) in traditional Chinese medicine. Traditional Chinese medical literature has early records of Gu Zhang. *Ling Shu: Shui Zhang Pian* states: "Gu Zhang... abdominal distension with general body enlargement, equal in size to the abdominal distension, sallow complexion, and prominent abdominal veins are its signs." *Qian Jin Fang* states: "Gu Zhang involves only abdominal fullness without swelling." *Jing Yue Quan Shu* states: "Single abdominal distension is named Gu Zhang; although the exterior appears firm and full, it is hollow inside, resembling a drum, hence also called Drum Distension... Moreover, the limbs are unaffected, and the issue lies solely in the abdomen, so it is also called Single Abdominal Distension." The use of Chinese herbs to treat liver cirrhosis with ascites is generally considered effective, with the best results occurring when ascites appears for the first time and feels neither tight nor hard upon pressure. For instance, if there is abdominal distension and ascites, thin white tongue coating, and string-taut slow pulse, Wu Pi Wu Ling He Fang (Combined Five Barks and Five Ling Decoction) or Fu Ling Dao Shui Tang (Poria Decoction to Guide Out Water) can be used; if the tongue coating is slightly yellow, with dry mouth and slippery pulse, Da Ju Pi Tang (Large Citrus Peel Decoction) can be used; if fingers and toes are cold, tongue coating is thin white, and pulse is deep and fine, Shi Pi Yin (Solidify the Spleen Decoction) can be used; if the abdominal skin is tense and hard upon pressure, Shi Zao Wan (Ten Date Pill) can be used; if there is jaundice, five-palm heat, red tongue with yellow coating, and slippery rapid pulse, a toad (without entrails) with 9g of Sha Ren (Amomi Fructus Rotundus) placed inside, dried and powdered for oral administration, can be used, all showing certain effects. However, second or third occurrences of ascites are much more difficult to treat. In second or third episodes, one type presents with non-red tongue body, thin white coating, string-taut slow pulse, and often normal liver function; another type presents with severe liver damage, jaundice, dark bluish-black complexion, occasional epistaxis and macules, red tongue with thin yellow coating, and deficient-large slippery rapid pulse. The former type often responds well to strengthening the spleen, warming the kidney, and promoting urination; the latter type is very difficult to treat effectively because it involves both deficiency and excess, and intertwined cold and heat. Nourishing yin aids dampness, drying dampness injures yin, warming yang generates heat, clearing heat injures yang, tonifying obstructs pathogenic factors, and eliminating pathogenic factors injures healthy qi. Therefore, during treatment, either the ascites cannot be resolved, or hepatic coma may occur after resolution.
In 1976, I studied under Professor Fang Yaozhong of the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences. I happened to observe his highly effective use of Cang Niu Fang Ji Tang (Atractylodes, Cyathula, and Stephania Decoction) to treat a patient with liver cirrhosis and ascites. This formula contains Cang Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) and Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) to strengthen the spleen, dry dampness, and promote urination; Fang Ji (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix) to clear heat, unblock collaterals, and promote urination; Chuan Niu Xi (Cyathulae Radix) and Huai Niu Xi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix) to tonify liver and kidney, invigorate blood, unblock collaterals, and move water. This method invigorates blood and promotes urination while slightly assisting tonification, draining damp-heat without injuring yin fluids. I subsequently verified this clinically, finding it often effective for cases of simultaneous liver-kidney deficiency with damp-heat and blood stasis. However, since this formula still leans more towards draining than tonifying, and invigorating blood more than tonifying the liver, it is difficult to consolidate therapeutic effects in cases of yin deficiency with fine-rapid pulse or qi-blood deficiency with deficient-large pulse. Therefore, tonifying agents must be added during treatment.
For example: Chen XX, male, 50 years old. Two years ago, liver cirrhosis with ascites was cured, but liver function remained abnormal. Recently, due to overwork, a second episode of ascites occurred, characterized by hard abdominal distension, lower limb edema, dark bluish-black complexion, scleral icterus, fatigue, yellow-red urine, red tongue body, thin white coating, and large-slippery-rapid wiry pulse. Initial Western medicine treatment was ineffective, and subsequent combination with Chinese medicine to strengthen the spleen, promote urination, and attack water retention also failed. Upon consultation, it was diagnosed as liver-kidney deficiency with internal stagnation of damp-heat and blood stasis with qi stagnation. Cang Niu Fang Ji Tang was prescribed: Cang Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) 30g, Fang Ji (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix) 60g, Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) 30g, Chuan Niu Xi (Cyathulae Radix) 30g, Huai Niu Xi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix) 30g. Combined with small amounts of Hydrochlorothiazide (Dihydrochlorothiazide) and Potassium Chloride. After 1 dose, several diarrheal episodes occurred, and urine volume increased. After 4 doses, ascites significantly decreased, appetite improved, and complexion became brighter. However, continued use did not further reduce ascites. Therefore, He Shou Wu (Polygoni Multiflori Radix) 30g, Huang Jing (Polygonati Rhizoma) 30g, Yin Yang Huo (Epimedii Folium) 30g, Qin Jiao (Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix) 4g, and Yin Chen (Artemisiae Scopariae Herba) 15g were added, alternating with the original formula. Ascites subsided after one month.
Another case: Geng XX, female, 30 years old. Cardiac cirrhosis with ascites for two years, characterized by large and hard abdominal distension, coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, cyanotic and dark lips, cheeks, and fingers, cold fingers, white tongue coating, purple-dark tongue body, and deficient-large rapid hurried pulse. Initial Western medicine treatment showed some improvement, but ascites and abdominal distension did not improve. Subsequent combination with Shi Pi Yin (Solidify the Spleen Decoction), Zhen Wu Tang (True Warrior Decoction), and Wu Pi Wu Ling He Fang (Combined Five Barks and Five Ling Decoction) was ineffective. An additional dose yielded no effect. Considering this as root deficiency with branch excess, tonifying healthy qi and eliminating pathogenic factors should be combined: Dang Shen (Codonopsis Radix) 10g, Huang Qi (Astragali Radix) 30g, Dan Shen (Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix) 30g, Ji Xue Teng (Spatholobi Caulis) 30g, Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) 10g, Huang Jing (Polygonati Rhizoma) 10g, Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix) 10g, Qing Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride) 10g, Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) 10g, Cang Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) 15g, Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) 15g, San Leng (Sparganii Rhizoma) 10g, E Zhu (Curcumae Rhizoma) 10g, Bo He (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba) 3g, Lai Fu Zi (Radish Seed) 10g, Sha Ren (Amomi Fructus Rotundus) 10g. After 1 dose, abdominal distension decreased; after 4 doses, urine volume increased; after 20 doses, ascites completely disappeared. The above formula was taken twice a week for one year continuously, resulting in精神和 appetite approximating normal levels.
Black Nevus
I once treated a patient, Zhang XX, female, adult. One year ago, a mung-bean-sized black nevus was found near the left temple, painless and itchless. Half a year later, it rapidly grew to the size of a red date. Urgent diagnosis at a certain hospital suggested melanoma. Due to the patient's refusal of biopsy, confirmation was not obtained. Another check-up at a Beijing hospital also suspected melanoma, but again, confirmation was impossible due to refusal of biopsy. Seeking my treatment, careful observation of complexion and pulse revealed mental fatigue, depressed complexion, frequent sighing, chest and hypochondriac fullness and distress, irritability, thin white tongue coating, and deep-slow pulse with slightly larger chi position. Synthesizing pulse and symptoms, it was diagnosed as liver-kidney insufficiency as the root, and qi stagnation with blood stasis as the branch. A formula modified from He Shou Wu (Polygoni Multiflori Radix), Hu Ma Ren (Semen Sesami Nigrum), Bai Ji Li (Tribuli Fructus), Si Gua Luo (Luffae Fructus Retinervus), Chi Shao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), Ju Ye (Citri Reticulatae Folium), and Dan Shen (Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix) was prescribed. After more than half a year, the nevus suddenly fell off completely, leading to cure. She urgently informed me, saying: If my husband had not undergone surgery and used Chinese medicine treatment, he might have been saved. (Note: Her husband died due to metastatic melanoma.)
Ulcerous Malignant Sores
Ming Fan (Alumen) is also known as Bai Fan. *Ben Jing* states: "Treats malignant sores." *Gang Mu* states: "Resolves toxicity... erodes bad flesh, generates good flesh, treats carbuncles, furuncles, and malignant sores." *Feng Yuan* states: "Sores all over the body like snake heads heal upon taking this." Feng Fang (Vespa Nidus) is also known as Feng Wo. It is good at "resolving toxicity and healing sores," treating "carbuncles, malignant sores, back abscesses, and scrofula." *Bie Lu* states: "Treats malignant ulcers and osteomyelitis." *Feng Yuan* states: "Sores and toothaches... all utilize its ability to use toxicity to combat toxicity." *Qiu Zhen* states: "It is an essential herb for clearing heat, softening hardness, and dissipating nodules; thus, convulsions, epilepsy, gu poison, carbuncles, scrofula... and wind toxins are eliminated by it." Honey is brewed by bees from nectar of non-toxic flowers. *Qiu Zhen* states: "It is the essence of trees and flowers... raw form is cool and clears heat, cooked form is warm and tonifies the middle; it is a pure and refined taste... For muscle sores... withered appearance, none fails to benefit from its moisturizing properties." *Gang Mu* states: "Sweet and peaceful, thus it resolves toxicity; soft and moistening, thus it moistens dryness; gentle action relieves urgency, thus it stops pain from heart, abdomen, and muscle sores." When my father was alive, he passed down a prescription: 1 Vespa Nidus, fill holes appropriately with Alumen powder, bake dry in an iron pot, grind into powder, mix with appropriate amount of honey to make a paste for topical application on malignant sores, which is very effective. On March 10, 1978, I treated a patient, Xing XX, male, 77 years old. Eight sub-nuclear sized ulcers under the right eyelid for over 8 months, edges slightly swollen, skin color unchanged, numb and painless. Long-term treatment with Chinese and Western medicines was ineffective. Pathological examination at Shanxi Tumor Hospital diagnosed squamous cell carcinoma. Due to the patient's refusal of surgery, the above formula was used for over 3 months. Ulcers significantly shrank and shallowed but became stiff and uncomfortable. Then, honey and Yunnan Baiyao mixed for topical application were used for 3 months, leading to cure. Follow-up after 10 years showed he was still healthy.
Running Piglet Syndrome (Ben Tun)
Ben Tun syndrome is recorded in detail in early Chinese medical works. *Nan Jing* states: "The accumulation in the kidney is named Ben Tun. It arises in the lower abdomen, rises to below the heart resembling a pig, moving up and down at any time. If prolonged, it causes panting, shortness of breath, and bone weakness." Zhang Zhongjing states: "Ben Tun disease starts from the lower abdomen, rushes up to the throat, attacks causing a desire to die, then returns and stops; all arise from fright and fear." *Zhu Bing Yuan Hou Lun* states: "Arises from fright, worry, and thought," "Its qi assaults the person, feeling like jumping in the heart, startled by a cart, afraid like a person, unstable storage, vomiting after eating, fullness in the chest, madness and dementia, delusions... heart stuffiness and confusion, dislike hearing voices, intermittent attacks, sometimes better sometimes urgent, shortness of breath, cold hands and feet, internal vexation and knotted pain, nausea... Pulse comes touching and vibrating." You Zaijing, while explaining Ben Tun disease, not only emphasized the disease's location in the kidney but also specifically stated "Ben Tun panic and terror all originate from liver disease," "Since liver and kidney are both in the lower jiao, their qi tends to rebel upwards." Additionally, Zhang Zhongjing proposed corresponding formulas. He said: "Ben Tun qi rushes to the chest, abdominal pain, alternating chills and fever, Ben Tun Tang governs it." "After sweating, burning needles induced sweat, needle site exposed to cold, nodules rise and turn red, must develop Ben Tun; qi rushes from lower abdomen to heart, moxa each nodule once, give Gui Zhi Jia Gui Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction plus Cinnamon)." "After sweating, if palpitations below the umbilicus occur, intending to develop Ben Tun, Fu Ling Gui Zhi Gan Cao Da Zao Tang (Poria, Cinnamon Twig, Licorice, and Jujube Decoction) governs it." "Cold damage, after vomiting or purging, fullness below the heart, qi rushes to chest, dizziness upon standing, deep-tight pulse, sweating moves meridians, body trembles, Fu Ling Gui Zhi Bai Zhu Gan Cao Tang (Poria, Cinnamon Twig, Atractylodes Macrocephala, and Licorice Decoction) governs it." "Taiyang disease sweating, sweat does not resolve, person still has fever, palpitations below heart, dizziness, body trembling, desire to fall to ground, Zhen Wu Tang (True Warrior Decoction) governs it." I adopted his intent and applied it to certain circulatory, nervous, and endocrine system diseases, often achieving effectiveness.
For example: Zhao XX, male, adult. Paroxysmal tachycardia for 15 years. Initial Western medicine and Chinese medicine to nourish heart and calm spirit, invigorate blood and unblock yang were ineffective. Careful examination revealed palpitations, paroxysmal attacks, sore waist and back, thin white pale tongue coating, deep-fine-wiry pulse with large and choppy chi position. Synthesizing pulse and symptoms, it was diagnosed as Ben Tun syndrome due to kidney qi insufficiency, heart yang deficiency, and water qi rushing upward. A modified Shi Wei Di Huang Tang (Ten-Ingredient Rehmannia Decoction) to tonify kidney, warm yang, and promote urination was prescribed: Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix) 9g, Shan Yao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma) 9g, Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus) 9g, Fu Ling (Poria) 9g, Ze Xie (Alismatis Rhizoma) 9g, Dan Pi (Moutan Cortex) 9g, Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Radix) 9g, Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) 9g, Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) 9g, Rou Gui (Cinnamomi Cortex) 9g. After 4 consecutive doses, attacks occurred only once within 4 days; after another 30 doses, palpitations disappeared.
Wei XX, male, 50 years old. Coronary heart disease, frequent premature ventricular contractions for 2 years. Previous doctors used Zhi Gan Cao Tang (Honey-Fried Licorice Decoction), Sheng Mai San (Generate the Pulse Powder), Yang Xin Tang (Nourish Heart Decoction), Bu Xin Dan (Tonify Heart Pill), and Xue Fu Zhu Yu Tang (Drive Out Stasis in the Mansion of Blood Decoction) without effect. Examination revealed palpitations in the epigastric region, paroxysmal attacks, rebellious qi rushing upward, chest fullness and shortness of breath when reaching the chest, palpitations and fear, even syncope. Several times, sudden attacks while riding a bicycle led to falls, requiring rescue to regain consciousness. Frequent dizziness, insomnia, chest fullness, irritability, bitter taste, dry throat, thin white tongue coating, and wiry-slippery pulse. Synthesizing pulse and symptoms, it was diagnosed as liver qi stagnation and knotting, heart yang depression, and failure to transform phlegm-dampness. Modified Chai Hu Jia Long Gu Mu Li Tang (Bupleurum Decoction with Dragon Bone and Oyster Shell) combined with Ling Gui Zhu Gan Tang (Poria, Cinnamon Twig, Atractylodes Macrocephala, and Licorice Decoction) was prescribed: Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix) 6g, Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix) 9g, Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) 9g, Dang Shen (Codonopsis Radix) 9g, Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) 9g, Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) 9g, Fu Ling (Poria) 15g, Gui Zhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus) 15g, Long Gu (Fossilia Ossis Mastodi) 15g, Mu Li (Concha Ostreae) 15g, Chuan Jun (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) 3g, Da Zao (Jujubae Fructus) 5 pieces. After 10 doses, paroxysmal rebellious qi rushing upward and palpitations did not recur, so the formula was continued. At 50 doses, a sudden attack occurred but was very mild. Continuing medication for 30 doses, treatment was stopped. Follow-up for over a year showed no recurrence.
Zhu XX, female, adult. Uterine functional bleeding, Meniere's disease, rheumatic heart disease, mitral stenosis and insufficiency, complete left bundle branch block for over 20 years, chronic gastritis for over 30 years, iron deficiency anemia for 5 years, splenomegaly awaiting diagnosis for 8 years. Long-term frequent dizziness, headache, insomnia, forgetfulness, epigastric pain, body and waist pain, palpitations, shortness of breath, fatigue, edema, oliguria, poor appetite, difficulty walking. Slight mental stimulation or fatigue causes abdominal palpitations, rebellious qi rushing upward, reaching the chest causing palpitations, sweating, pale complexion, cold limbs, faint pulse, blood pressure drop, and sudden syncope. Especially severe in the past six months, each attack required rescue. Long-term hospitalization in Beijing, Taiyuan, etc., was ineffective. Seeking my treatment, complexion was bright white without luster, emaciated and fatigued, difficulty turning over, hot palms but cold limbs, pale tongue with thin white coating, deep-fine-wiry pulse occasionally showing knotted image. Synthesizing pulse and symptoms, it was diagnosed as Ben Tun syndrome due to deficiency of yin, yang, qi, and blood, decline of middle qi, and kidney water flooding upward. Fourteen-Ingredient Jian Zhong Tang (Fourteen-Ingredient Build the Middle Decoction) was prescribed to warm spleen and kidney, descend rebellious qi, tonify qi and blood, and double-tonify spleen and kidney: Huang Qi (Astragali Radix) 15g, Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) 9g, Chuan Xiong (Chuanxiong Rhizoma) 9g, Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix) 9g, Zhi Gan Cao (Honey-Fried Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) 9g, Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) 10g, Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Radix) 10g, Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) 10g, Rou Gui (Cinnamomi Cortex) 10g, Yan Rou Cong Rong (Cynomorii Herba) 15g, Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) 3 slices, Da Zao (Jujubae Fructus) 5 pieces. After 7 consecutive doses, symptoms slightly decreased; after another 30 doses, rebellious qi rushing upward disappeared, epigastric pain improved, and bed mobility resumed. Subsequently, the above formula combined with Ding Kun Dan (Settling Female Pill) was used for one year. Except for irregular menstruation, all other symptoms disappeared.
Zhang XX, female, adult. Paroxysmal palpitations for over half a year, accompanied by sensation of rebellious qi rushing upward, fever, dizziness, and sweating upon onset. Diagnosed with autonomic dysfunction and pending pheochromocytoma at a certain hospital. Chinese and Western medicine treatments were ineffective. Upon consultation, onset featured palpitations, irritability, dizziness, sweating, blood pressure 190/120 mmHg, paroxysmal chills and fever, back heaviness, white tongue coating, and wiry-slippery-rapid pulse. It was diagnosed as Ben Tun syndrome due to liver qi stagnation and phlegm-heat disturbing the heart. Treatment should soothe liver, regulate qi, resolve phlegm, and drain fire. Modified Ben Tun Tang (Running Piglet Decoction): Chuan Xiong (Chuanxiong Rhizoma) 10g, Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) 10g, Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix) 10g, Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) 10g, Ge Gen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix) 15g, Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) 10g, Sang Bai Pi (Mori Cortex) 15g, Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) 6g. After 2 doses, symptoms improved; after over 80 doses, symptoms disappeared.
Ben Tun syndrome is a very common disease, involving both cold and heat, deficiency and excess. Therefore, careful differentiation is necessary during treatment.
Macules (Ban)
Nodular erythema is very similar to Damp-Toxin Flowing Accumulation (Shi Du Liu Zhu) in traditional Chinese medicine. Recently, I often achieve success using methods to clear heat, promote urination, resolve stasis, and dissipate nodules. For example: Zhang XX, female, adult. Nodular erythema near knees and ankles of both lower limbs for 4 years. Doctors treated with hormones for half a year, leading to resolution, but recurrence occurred upon stopping medication. Recently, erythema increased, with pain, fever, and edema. Seeking my treatment, tongue was red with yellow-white greasy coating, pulse was wiry-slippery-rapid. Diagnosed as damp-heat obstructing collaterals. Shang Zhong Xia Tong Feng Fang (Upper, Middle, Lower Gout Decoction) was prescribed: Huang Bo (Phellodendri Cortex) 10g, Cang Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) 10g, Nan Xing (Arisaematis Cum Bile) 10g, Gui Zhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus) 10g, Fang Ji (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix) 15g, Wei Ling Xian (Syneilesidis Rhizoma) 10g, Tao Ren (Persicae Semen) 10g, Hong Hua (Carthami Flos) 10g, Long Dan Cao (Gentianae Radix) 10g, Qiang Huo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix) 6g, Bai Zhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix) 10g, Chuan Xiong (Chuanxiong Rhizoma) 10g, Shen Qu (Massa Medicata Fermentata) 10g. After 4 doses, pain improved, erythema subsided; after continuing for 20 doses, erythema disappeared.
