However, the use of medicines is also a mixture of cold and hot. The meridians are not distinguished. For example, the Shengsanzi Decoction (Holy Dispelling Substances Formula) passed down by Su Zhan (Su Shi). It is included indiscriminately. This is truly shocking to behold.
According to Zhou Bida's postscript on Huang Tingjian's writing regarding Su Dongpo's "Shengsanzi Preface": Huang Tingjian wrote in the postface to Pang Anchang's *Treatise on Cold Damage* that the previous preface was written by the Daoist monk Nuo from Haishang. Therefore, he left space above for it. The "Daoist" refers to Su Dongpo.

Ye Mengde wrote in his postscript: Wang Zhonggong possessed noble character. Although he was a young nobleman, he remained detached from worldly affairs. He served in office several times but resigned himself. He was erudite and well-informed, and skilled in medicine. When associating with figures from past dynasties such as Lou Changyan, Chang Yingshi, Lai Dao, Fang, and others, he once said: Regarding the disease of Cold Damage, no place escapes its affliction year after year. However, treatment methods have specific indications. Transmission through meridians and efficacy based on days cannot be off by even a hair's breadth. Zhang Zhongjing's book exists in the world. Like the penal codes used by legalists, if applied correctly, it could ensure that there are no unjustly condemned people under heaven. Yet, mediocre doctors often do not understand it. Their observation of signs and symptoms is also not thorough enough. Thus, they neither know how to apply the methods nor discern the condition's nature. Consequently, they kill people, though we do not know how many. Therefore, deducing from Zhongjing's book, I composed *Diagnosis and Treatment of Cold Damage*. I elucidated obscure points, mixed citations from previous scholars' discussions, and sought a compromise among them. Fearing that common people might not fully understand, I selected those that were simple and clear, which readers could comprehend, and published them as *Essentials for Treating Cold Damage*. I said: If one can trace the origin of the disease and verify it through signs and symptoms, and apply it according to my book, even without consulting a doctor, eight or nine out of ten cases could be successful. This is the intention of a benevolent person. I once criticized doctors in the southeast for failing to master Zhongjing's techniques in nine out of ten cases. Thus, I had this woodblock printed to share with the public, enabling every household to keep this book and understand its techniques. Would it not be more than just preventing unjust deaths? Proper care would not miss appropriateness; administration of medication would not miss moderation. Even if it leads to no punishments being necessary, that would be ideal. Wise men should not neglect this. (*Jiankang Ji* by Linshi Jushi)
[Wang Shi (Shi) *Diagnosis and Treatment of Cold Damage*] Song Records, two volumes (Record of Reading suggests three volumes). Lost.
Zhao Xibian said: *Diagnosis and Treatment of Cold Damage*, three volumes. Compiled in the late Song Dynasty by Wang Shi. Wang stated that among all diseases, none is more urgent than Cold Damage. Therefore, he briefly listed disease names and methods, along with words from famous doctors of the time, forming thirteen chapters. In total, there are 146 formulas. Some say he was from Yingchuan and held the official title of Wailang. He was a senior disciple of Pang Anchang.
Liu said: *Diagnosis and Treatment of Cold Damage*. Compiled by Wang Shi, Prefect of Xinyang. (*Youyou Xinshu*)

[Lu Shi (Chang) *Piece of Jade Collection for Cold Damage*] Three volumes. Lost.
Yuan Haowen wrote in the Tomb Inscription for Imperial Physician Lu: Imperial Physician Lu, named Chang, came from a family in Wen'an, Bazhou, now residing in Daming. He became famous in Hebei for his medical skills. In the second year of Zhenghe, he was appointed as Ta Yi Fengyu. He was ordered to correct the *Heji Ju Fang* (Bureau Formulas) and supplement the treatment methods. He successively rose to become Head of the Shangyao Bureau. From childhood, he inherited family learning, studying diligently and reading tirelessly until old age. From Qi Bo, Huang Di, Lei Gong, Bian Que downwards, there were hundreds of books and millions of words of theories. His knowledge was vast and profound, covering even the most minute details without exception. He devoted particular effort to Sun Simiao's *Qianjin Fang* (Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold). Thus, his medical efficacy was quite similar to Sun's. Although advanced in years, his spirit and vision were sharp; looking at him, one knew he was a man of the Way. He lived to be eighty-seven. He predicted his own death date, left a poem, sat and slept, and wrote fifty chapters of *Medical Mirror* and three volumes of *Piece of Jade Collection for Cold Damage*. These books still exist today. Beyond medical arts, he also understood the subtleties of cultivating the mind and nurturing nature. He said: Humans live between heaven and earth. Every movement and breath conforms to the natural numbers of Yin and Yang. They are not indifferent or unrelated. Good and evil deeds should be observed by spirits and deities. He also said: When humans perform overt good deeds, people reward them. When humans perform hidden good deeds, spirits and deities know them. When humans commit overt evil, people punish them. When humans commit hidden evil, spirits and deities punish them. He also said: To nourish Qi, nothing is better than calming the mind. To nourish the body, nothing is better than caution. He also said: With a focused mind, both victory and defeat are discarded. Although these ideas were already expressed by former sages, bringing them to light, first governing oneself and then extending to others—is this not the heart of a benevolent person? His health, peace, longevity, and the five blessings were complete, not by chance. Chang and I had familial ties. Because his descendants returned him for burial, I wrote this to present to them, hoping his fellow townspeople would know that this family came from my lineage. Over time, I also came to know him deeply. (*Yishan Ji*)
Chen Ziming said: During the Zhenghe era, Zhu Gongyi Gong wrote the *Huoren Shu* (Book Reviving People). Later, Qian and Li Shi plagiarized it into songs, calling it *Lei Zheng Huoren Shu* (Classified Symptoms Book Reviving People). Lu Shi collected several chapters, naming it *Shanghan Lun Pianyu* (Piece of Jade of the Treatise on Cold Damage). All these works use vulgar language and fail to fully express their meaning. Ultimately, they cannot serve as models. Therefore, knowledgeable people do not read them. (*Guanjian Liangfang*)
