(Note: Yellow Edema, Yellow Sweat)
Jaundice is a condition caused by damp-heat. When dampness cannot be diffused and discharged, it stagnates and steams to generate heat; when heat cannot be ventilated and circulated, it consolidates to generate dampness. Dampness becomes deeper with the assistance of heat, and heat becomes more intense due to the presence of dampness. The two mutually assist and complete each other, becoming more severe the longer they persist. However, investigating the origin of this damp-heat, it invariably arises from excessive drinking and overeating, followed by sleeping or lying down for long periods, or strenuous sexual intercourse. It may also result from bathing in water after drinking and eating excessively; the cold air constricts and binds, closing the couli (skin pores), preventing sweat from exiting, thereby causing damp-heat to interact and form this disease. Unable to release externally through sweat or internally through bowel movements, the damp-heat steams and permeates into the skin, reaching upwards to the face and eyes, downwards to the dorsum of the feet, and centrally affecting the arms, anterior abdomen, and posterior back. The entire body appears yellow like gold. The urine is red and dark like turmeric. Just as salting or pickling changes the color of food, the body changes color due to damp-heat. The general treatment principle is: if jaundice is more severe in the upper body, sweating methods should be used; if it is more severe in the lower body, diuretic methods should be employed to separate and eliminate dampness while simultaneously using heat-clearing agents. Furthermore, one must observe the specific food that caused the injury and digest it, rather than merely treating the damp-heat. Jaundice is divided into five types: Wine Jaundice, Grain Jaundice, Yellow Sweat, Grain Jaundice (Gu Dan), and Labor-induced Jaundice (Nu Lao Dan); their causes must be distinguished. The disease originates from damp-heat. To know which cases are incurable and how to identify them: death occurs if the jaundice turns black like smoke or dust; if the urine resembles paste; if abdominal distension occurs; or if food intake is extremely low. If the eyes gradually turn white and urination becomes prolonged and free, the disease will recede.
In cases of the Five Jaundices with excess-heat, the pulse must be surging and rapid. If the pulse is faint and choppy, the symptoms belong to deficiency and weakness.
