In the exterior syndrome of the Taiyang meridian in Shanghan (Cold Damage) disease, all six pulses are tight.

After sweating therapy for Shanghan, pain persists because Qi and Blood have not yet harmonized; the pulse is wiry and slow.
When injured by Dampness, Dampness flows into the joints, causing pain throughout the entire body. Wind-Dampness combats each other, resulting in heaviness and pain in the limbs, making it impossible to turn or shift position; the pulse is moderate.
Pain in individuals with Xu Lao (Deficiency Consumption) arises from deficiency and scarcity of Qi and Blood; the pulse is wiry and small.
All pains originate from Qi dysfunction.

Colloquially known as "Chuan Shi" (Passing Corpse/Consumption), although symptoms vary, the pathology resembles previous descriptions. Generally, it causes alternating chills and fever, night sweats, dreams of sexual intercourse with spirits, seminal emission, white turbidity, sudden starts upon onset, abdominal masses, or several small nodules on both sides of the back of the head, which may aggregate or disperse. The patient feels depressed and silent, coughs up blood and phlegm, suffers from lower abdominal dysentery, emaciation, and exhaustion beyond endurance. Although symptoms differ, the root cause is often attributed to insects eroding the Heart and Lungs. This is generally due to Yin deficiency or pathological Phlegm and Blood.
