The disease of nausea and vomiting during pregnancy (Ezu, 恶阻), referred to as "Zibing" (Sub-disease) in *Chanbao* and "Ezu" in Chao Yuanfang's *Zhubing Yuanhou Lun*, refers to the nausea experienced by women during pregnancy, which obstructs normal dietary intake. This condition arises from weak Stomach Qi and the retention of phlegm-fluids in the Middle Jiao (Middle Burner). The pulse is harmonious and smooth, presenting mainly with heavy limbs, dizziness, picky eating habits, and a strong craving for sour and salty flavors. In severe cases, it manifests as alternating chills and fever, vomiting, and irritability or fullness in the chest and diaphragm. Generally, obese individuals tend to have excessive phlegm, while thin individuals tend to have internal fire; treatment should primarily utilize Erchen Tang (Two-Cured Decoction).
Baosheng Tang (Preserve Life Decoction)
Indicated for women whose menstruation has ceased, who appear healthy but feel unwell. The pulse is slippery and large, with all six positions uniform, indicating a pregnancy pulse. Mental spirit remains unchanged, yet there is aversion to food odors, or a desire to eat only specific foods, or profuse vomiting of clear fluid. This is named Ezu. Do not mistakenly treat this as a Cold syndrome.
Ingredients: Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Gancao (Licorice Root and Rhizome) (each 2.5 qian); Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Xiangfu (Cyperi Rhizoma), Wuyao (Linderae Radix) (each 5 qian).
If nausea and vomiting are felt, add Dingxiang (Caryophylli Flos).
Prepare as two doses, decoct with three slices of Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) and take orally.
Fuyuan Tang (Restore Primordial Decoction)
Indicated for pregnant women with incessant vomiting, or headache with complete loss of appetite, a weak left pulse, and ineffectiveness of other medications. This formula is used to regulate blood and return it to its origin.
Ingredients: Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma) (each 5 qian); Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Fuling (Poria), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) (each 1.5 liang); Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix), Zhike (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus) (each 2.5 qian); Dingxiang (Caryophylli Flos) (3 qian); Gancao (Licorice Root and Rhizome) (5 qian); Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) (soaked in Jiangtang [Ginger Juice], 1 liang).
Prepare as ten doses, decoct with Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) and Dazao (Jujubae Fructus) and take orally.
For nausea and vomiting occurring within the first three months of pregnancy, where rice food is not tolerated, use Siwu Tang (Four-Substance Decoction) added with Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Huoxiang (Agastaches Herba), Sharen (Amomi Fructus), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Shenqu (Massa Medicata Fermentata), Maiya (Hordei Fructus Germinatus), Chen Cangmi (Rizum Oryzae Sativae Condita), and Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens), decocted and taken orally.
Zhenzi Fan (Pregnancy-related Subtle Irritability) refers to a state of irritability and mental confusion. It is generally believed that at four months of gestation, the Shaoyin Junfire (Ministerial Fire of Shaoyin) nourishes the essence, and at six months, the Shaoyang Xiangfire (Assistantial Fire of Shaoyang) nourishes the qi. If the mother experiences fright, fear, or coldness, this symptom often occurs. *Chanbao* states: this is due to deficiency-heat in the Heart and Lungs, or phlegm accumulation in the chest. If irritability occurs at three months, it is merely due to heat. If irritability is caused by phlegm-fluids, there will be spitting of saliva and aversion to food. Generally, when phlegm and fluids stagnate, and cold and heat struggle against each other, severe vomiting may lead to unstable fetus. Treat with Zhuye Tang (Bamboo Leaf Decoction).
Zhuye Tang (Bamboo Leaf Decoction)
Ingredients: Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) (remove rhizome head), Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix) (soak, remove heart), Fuling (Poria), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) (equal parts).
Prepare one dose, use ten leaves of Zhuye (Phyllostachys Nigra Folium), decoct with water, and take warm after meals.
