Trichosanthis Radix (San liang in weight) [Trichosanthis Radix]
Curcumae Longae Rhizoma (Yi liang in weight) [Curcuma Longa Rhizome]
Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (Yi liang in weight) [Dahurian Angelica Root]
Paeoniae Rubra Radix (Er liang in weight) [Red Peony Root]
The above are ground into fine powder. Use tea, wine, or decoction for administration or external application. Based on the syndrome, apply the hot medicine externally to treat various heat syndromes, toxicity of carbuncles and swellings, and injuries caused by metal weapons (Jin Chuang).
This single medicine is merely cool in nature. It can transform blood into fluid, dissipate blood stasis and accumulation, cool the skin and promote flesh regeneration, remove necrotic muscle and rotting flesh, break blood stasis and reduce swelling, stagnate qi to make it float, relieve pain and alleviate pain, close pus and expel pus, with opposing yet complementary effects. The medicinal property of this formula has no other mystery: when encountering cool conditions, the efficacy is less; when encountering heat conditions, the efficacy is greater. Therefore, unless it is a very obvious Yang syndrome (syndromes characterized by heat, redness, swelling, and pain), it should not be used lightly, lest it cause cold coagulation and make treatment laborious. If it is bleeding from injury by metal weapons, this medicine is indispensable; it is the primary medicine. In other cases, it can only serve as an assistant and guide to the previous two medicines. One must examine carefully. Generally speaking, these three medicines can cooperate with joint efforts, hold exclusive authority alone, divide responsibilities, surround and attack together, seek reinforcements, support each other bravely, act as the vanguard of orthodox troops to win through unconventional tactics, or act as the vanguard of unconventional troops to win through orthodox tactics. Divine, sacred, skillful, and clever medical arts are indeed no different from military strategy. However, troops move according to the seal, and generals follow orders. Thus, establishing merit and winning victory depend on the person. If one is not a scholar who understands principles and adapts to changes, what is there to talk about? The methods of use are as follows:
1. If the disease condition is severely hot, mix with hot tea for external application. If the condition is slightly warm, mix with wine. If used to express pus, use three parts ginger juice and seven parts tea for mixing. Why? This medicine is the coolest and can make blood recede; ginger juice is hot in nature and can attract blood flow. Thus, receding blood is attracted, and surging blood is driven away. Through the standoff of advancing and retreating, pus forms and ruptures, forcing the pus to drain completely.
2. For any broken sore where the flesh remains hard and does not resolve, it is because the sore has been attacked by wind pathogen. Add Angelica Pubescens Root (Du Huo) to this formula to dispel wind, and mix with hot wine for application. If it still does not resolve, the wind-toxin has penetrated deeply and the muscles are firm; add Bark of Cudrania Tricuspidata (Zi Jing Pi), which will surely lead to resolution.
3. This formula is excellent for treating injuries by metal weapons and various heat syndromes causing redness and swelling, cutting off the root of all bleeding, preventing the area from becoming inflamed and red. However, for carbuncles and sores (Yong Ju), do not use it lightly. Fear that after application, the toxin will not disperse but enter inward. If in the bone, it becomes bone abscess; if in the throat and neck, toxic gas gathers in the throat; if in the chest and back, it causes internal organs to rot yinward; if in the abdomen, it becomes internal abscess. It kills without cure. Can one not be cautious? It is best to use Chong He Gao (Harmonizing Paste) and Yu Long Gao (Jade Dragon Paste), applying them according to rules and detailed syndrome differentiation.
4. For young people with robust blood and qi, or elderly people with depleted blood and qi, if there is spurting bleeding with no medicine to stop it, leading to death when blood is exhausted. If on the limbs, mix with tea and apply far above and below the injury (more than chi); if on the chest, back, waist, and abdomen, apply over the whole body to block the blood pathway, then stop the bleeding. Subsequently use hemostatic medicines. (Powder of Chinese Gall [Wu Bei Zi], see later formula.) Or Shen Xiao Jun Zhong Fang (Divine Effect Military Formula), then peace and recovery can be achieved.
5. For severe injuries by metal weapons, with severed tendons and cut vessels, leading to blood exhaustion and death. To stop bleeding, bind the arm with rope and silk bag, then apply this formula mixed with tea over the blood pathway on the arm, then use hemostatic medicine to seal the wound. Do not use internal tonics or Si Wu Tang (Four Substance Decoction), otherwise it may cause vomiting, and even deviation of mouth and eyes. Soon irritability and fever will occur, developing into tetanus (Po Shang Feng, an acute specific infection caused by Clostridium tetani infection of the wound). Only take Dui Jin Yin (Metal-Resolving Drink) added with Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome (Chuan Xiong), Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (Bai Zhi), ginger, and jujube, decocted and taken orally for self-stabilization, then slowly tonify blood. If tetanus symptoms already exist, use tetanus medicine, such as Puerariae Lobatae Radix Decoction (Ge Gen Tang). (Formula see later.) For the wound, use Jun Zhong Fang (Military Seal Formula) added with nine-rib softshell turtle shell (Jiu Lei Bie Jia) roasted in butter and crushed.
6. For injuries by metal weapons on the head and face, where bleeding does not stop. Urgently use this formula, mix with tea, and apply around the neck to intercept the blood flow. Apply around the wound edge as well, and seal with Jun Zhong Fang. Severe cases show effect in ten days, mild cases in three days.
7. For injuries by metal weapons exposed to water, with everted flesh (flesh turning outward like flowers), use juice of Allium Macrostemon (Xie) to mix this formula and apply to both sides of the wound, then moxa mildly with fire. Or smoke with early rice straw ash. If water exudes from the wound, it heals. If no water exudes, it is wind invasion; apply Arisaema Cum Bile (Nan Xing) mixed with tea, and it will heal. Then seal with Jun Zhong Fang for best results.
8. For postpartum women in women, or those whose menstruation has ceased with blood flowing upward inversely, heart unable to govern, or hematemesis (vomiting blood), epistaxis (nosebleed), or lingual hemorrhage (tongue bleeding), use this formula mixed with well water (Jing Hua Shui) applied to the neck. Mixing with fresh mugwort juice is also excellent; the bleeding stops immediately. Then take medicine to eliminate the source. If lingual hemorrhage, there must be blood blisters; if broken, they swell again. Tie a thread around the base of the tongue and neck, do not remove it, to intercept blood at the neck. Internally take Scutellariae Radix (Huang Qin) and Schizonepetae Spica (Jing Jie) to cool the heart and gather the original state. On the tongue, use honey-mixed astringent medicine to treat it; after breaking the blister and removing the thread, the blood will not swell. Take Si Wu Tang (Four Substance Decoction) with cooling heart properties added with Schizonepetae Spica (Jing Jie), Menthae Haplocalycis Herba (Bo He), and Cinnabar (Zhu Sha).
9. When using this formula to mix and apply for heat-toxin, fear that it dries quickly causing pain, and redness/swelling does not recede. When using egg white (Ji Zi Qing) to mix and apply, it is excellent for difficult-to-dry heat-toxins. Same for scalds and burns.
10. For blunt trauma injuries on the chest and diaphragm, where medicine cannot pass down through the blood, mix Trichosanthis Kirilowii Seed powder with mung bean water and swallow. Vomiting occurs and relief follows. Also, for falls from height, if blood-invigorating medicines fail to work, and the patient nearly dies after several days. This is likely due to cold weather, taking Rhubarb (Da Huang) and other medicines that freeze the blood, causing blood clots to stagnate. Mix with hot wine and drink Jiang Jiang Mo (Ginger Powder), and blood circulation resumes in a moment, saving life. Essentially, borrowing heat nature to activate dead blood allows the previous medicines to work.
