263. The pattern of Shaoyang disease (Shaoyang stage disease) is characterized by bitter taste in the mouth, dry throat, and dizziness.
264. In Shaoyang wind-stroke (wind pathogen attacking the Shaoyang channel), if there is deafness in both ears, red eyes, fullness in the chest, and vexation, vomiting or purgation methods must not be used. If vomiting or purgation is mistakenly applied, it will lead to palpitations and fright.
265. In cold damage (Shanghan), if the pulse is wiry and thin, accompanied by headache and fever, it belongs to Shaoyang disease. Sweating method must not be used for Shaoyang disease; if sweating is mistakenly induced, it will cause delirium. This condition pertains to the Stomach; if the Stomach qi is harmonized, the patient will recover; if the Stomach qi is not harmonized, there will be vexation and palpitations. (Another version states "agitation".)
266. If the original Taiyang disease (Taiyang stage disease) is not resolved and transfers into Shaoyang, presenting with hardness and fullness below the ribs, dry retching with inability to eat, alternating chills and fever, and if vomiting or purgation has not yet been administered, and the pulse is deep and tight, administer Xiao Chai Hu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction).
Formula 1:
Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix, 8 liang), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, 3 liang), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix, 3 liang), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, prepared, 3 liang), Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, washed, 0.5 sheng), Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, sliced, 3 liang), Da Zao (Jujubae Fructus, broken, 12 pieces).
Decoct the above seven ingredients in 1 dou 2 sheng of water to obtain 6 sheng of liquid. Remove the dregs and decoct again to reduce to 3 sheng. Take 1 sheng warm, three times a day.
267. If vomiting, purgation, sweating, or warm needle therapy has already been administered, resulting in delirium, and the patterns indicating Xiao Chai Hu Tang have disappeared, this is a deteriorated disease (Huai Bing, disease worsened by mistreatment). Determine the specific error committed and treat according to the appropriate method.
268. In combined disease of the three Yang channels (Taiyang, Yangming, and Shaoyang), the pulse is floating and large, extending above the Guan position. The patient desires only to sleep and sweats when closing the eyes.
269. In cold damage, after six or seven days, if there is no high fever but the patient is agitated and vexed, this is because the Yang qi has departed and the pathogen has entered the Yin.
270. In cold damage, after three days, the pathogens in the three Yang channels are exhausted, and the three Yin channels should receive the pathogen. If the patient can instead eat without vomiting, this indicates that the three Yin channels have not received the pathogen.
271. In cold damage, after three days, if the Shaoyang pulse becomes small, the disease is about to resolve.
272. The time when Shaoyang disease tends to resolve is from Yin hour to Chen hour (3:00 AM to 9:00 AM).
273. The pattern of Taiyin disease (Taiyin stage disease) is characterized by abdominal distension and vomiting, inability to ingest food, spontaneous diarrhea that worsens, and occasional spontaneous abdominal pain. If purgation is used, it will inevitably cause binding and hardness below the chest.
274. In Taiyin wind-stroke, if there is vexing pain in the four limbs, and the pulse is faint in the Yang position, choppy in the Yin position, and long, it indicates impending recovery.
275. The time when Taiyin disease tends to resolve is from Hai hour to Chou hour (9:00 PM to 3:00 AM).
276. In Taiyin disease, if the pulse is floating, the sweating method may be used; Gui Zhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction) is appropriate.
Formula 1:
Gui Zhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus, peeled, 3 liang), Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, 3 liang), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, prepared, 2 liang), Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, sliced, 3 liang), Da Zao (Jujubae Fructus, broken, 12 pieces).
Decoct the above five ingredients in 7 sheng of water to obtain 3 sheng of liquid. Remove the dregs and take 1 sheng warm. Shortly after, consume 1 sheng of hot thin porridge to assist the medicinal effect, and cover with warm clothing to induce sweating.
277. Spontaneous diarrhea without thirst belongs to Taiyin disease, because there is cold in the Zang organs; it should be warmed. Si Ni Tang class formulas (Frigid Extremities Decoction category) are appropriate.
Formula 2.
278. In cold damage, if the pulse is floating and moderate, and the hands and feet are naturally warm, the disease is located in Taiyin. Taiyin disease should manifest as body yellowing (jaundice); if urination is free and profuse, yellowing will not occur. By the seventh or eighth day, although there may be sudden vexation and severe diarrhea, more than ten times a day, it will inevitably stop on its own. This is because the Spleen qi has become substantial (Pi Jia Shi), and the rotten turbidity should be expelled.
279. In original Taiyang disease, if the physician mistakenly uses purgation, resulting in abdominal distension and occasional pain, it belongs to Taiyin disease; Gui Zhi Jia Shao Yao Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction plus Peony Root) governs it. If there is severe excess pain, Gui Zhi Jia Da Huang Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction plus Rhubarb) governs it.
Formula 3.
Gui Zhi Jia Shao Yao Tang Formula:
Gui Zhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus, peeled, 3 liang), Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, 6 liang), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, prepared, 2 liang), Da Zao (Jujubae Fructus, broken, 12 pieces), Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, sliced, 3 liang).
Decoct the above five ingredients in 7 sheng of water to obtain 3 sheng of liquid. Remove the dregs and divide into three warm doses. The original text refers to Gui Zhi Tang, now adding Shao Yao.
Gui Zhi Jia Da Huang Tang Formula:
Gui Zhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus, peeled, 3 liang), Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, 2 liang), Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, 6 liang), Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, sliced, 3 liang), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, prepared, 2 liang), Da Zao (Jujubae Fructus, broken, 12 pieces).
Decoct the above six ingredients in 7 sheng of water to obtain 3 sheng of liquid. Remove the dregs and take 1 sheng warm, three times a day.
280. In Taiyin disease, if the pulse is weak and the patient continues to have free spontaneous diarrhea, if Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) and Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) are indicated, their dosages should be reduced, because the patient's Stomach qi is weak and easily disturbed. (If there is diarrhea, decoct Shao Yao first until it boils three times.)
