Water Qi (Edema)
After a major illness has resolved, if there is water qi (edema) below the waist, Muli Zexie San (Oyster Shell and Alisma Powder) should be used. (Cheng Wuji notes: After a major illness resolves, the Spleen-Stomach Qi is deficient and cannot control Kidney Water, causing it to overflow into the Lower Jiao, resulting in edema below the waist. The *Jin Gui Yao Lue* states: "For edema below the waist, promote urination." Muli Zexie San promotes urination to dissipate water qi.)
Formula for Muli Zexie San (Oyster Shell and Alisma Powder)
Muli (Oyster Shell, calcined) Zexie (Alisma Rhizome) Gualougen (Trichosanthes Root) Shuqi (Patrinia Herb, washed to remove sediment) Tinglizi (Descurainia Seed, calcined) Shanglugen (Phytolacca Root, calcined) Haizao (Sargassum Thallus, washed to remove saltiness; all ingredients in equal parts)
The above seven herbs are separately pounded and sifted into a powder, then further ground in a mortar. Take one cubic inch (fangcun bi) of the powder mixed with white rice decoction. Stop subsequent doses once urination becomes smooth and edema subsides. Take three times daily. (Note: Salty flavors induce vomiting and purging. The salty nature of Muli, Zexie, and Haizao drains water qi. The *Nei Jing* states: "When dampness abounds internally, treat with neutral flavors, assist with sour and pungent flavors, and drain dampness with bitter flavors." The sour, pungent, and bitter properties of Shuqi, Tinglizi, Gualougen, and Shanglugen guide out swelling and dampness.)
Excessive Saliva
After a major illness resolves, if there is excessive salivation that persists for a long time without resolving, it indicates Cold in the Stomach. Pill medicine should be used to warm it; Lizhong Wan (Regulate the Middle Pill) is suitable. (Cheng Wuji notes: After sweating, Yang Qi is insufficient, leading to deficiency-Cold in the Stomach which fails to transform fluids, causing persistent salivation. Lizhong Warms the Stomach; adding Yizhiren is even better.)
The *Qianjin Fang* records: For post-illness dry mouth, excessive salivation, or sore throat, use ten large dates and three dark plums, pound finely, mix with refined honey, and form pills the size of a date pit. Hold in the mouth and swallow slowly. If the sore throat persists, soak Dougen (Toosendan Fruit) in cool water, hold in the mouth, and swallow the bitter juice; this is also effective.
Desire to Vomit
After Shaoyang disease resolves, if the patient is emaciated, short of breath, and experiences rebellious Qi with a desire to vomit, Zhuye Shigao Tang (Bamboo Leaf and Gypsum Decoction) should be used. (Cheng Wuji notes: After Shaoyang disease resolves, fluid deficiency leads to emaciation, and residual heat remains. Heat injures Qi, causing shortness of breath; rebellious Qi causes the desire to vomit. Zhuye Shigao Tang regulates the Stomach and clears heat.)
Formula for Zhuye Shigao Tang (Bamboo Leaf and Gypsum Decoction)
Zhuye (Bamboo Leaves, two handfuls) Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum, one jin) Banxia (Pinellia Tuber, half a jin, washed) Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, three liang) Gancao (Licorice Root, two liang) Jingsmi (Rice, half sheng) Maimendong (Ophiopogon Tuber, one sheng, heart removed)
The above seven herbs are boiled in ten dou of water until six sheng remain. Strain, add Jingsmi, and boil until the rice is cooked and the soup is ready. Remove the rice. Take one sheng warm each time, three times daily. (Note: Pungent and sweet flavors disperse and clear heat. The sweet and pungent nature of Zhuye, Shigao, and Gancao disperses residual heat; sweet flavors soothe the Spleen and tonify Qi. The sweet nature of Maimendong, Renshen, and Jingsmi supplements deficiencies. Pungent flavors disperse; Banxia's pungency disperses rebellious Qi.)
Slight Irritation at Dusk
If the patient's pulse has normalized but they feel slight irritation at dusk, it is because the illness has just resolved, and forced eating overwhelms the still-weak Spleen-Stomach Qi, which cannot digest the food, causing slight irritation. Reducing food intake will lead to recovery. (The Yangming channel governs the Shen, You, and Xu hours. Food stagnation in the Stomach causes slight irritation at dusk. Mild purgation should be used to reduce stagnant food, but here only Zhizi Chi Tang (Gardenia and Fermented Soybean Decoction) is used; if epigastric fullness and hardness occur, add Zhishi.) The above are all from Zhang Zhongjing's works; the following are additions.

Residual Toxins
If Shaoyang sweating is incomplete, and pathogenic heat accumulates one cun two fen three li behind the ear or causes swelling and hardness under the ear, it is called Fayi (Parotitis). This is caused by residual heat becoming toxic. It should be dissipated quickly; if delayed, it will suppurate and cause further harm.

Qianghuo (Notopterygium Root) Duhuo (Angelica Pubescens Root) [medium grade] Lianqiao (Forsythia Fruit, upper grade) Jingjie (Schizonepeta Spike) Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root) Chaihu (Bupleurum Root) [medium grade] Shengma (Cimicifuga Rhizome, lower grade) Jiegeng (Platycodon Root) [medium grade] Gancao (Licorice Root, lower grade) Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Rhizome) [medium grade] Niubangzi (Arctium Seed, fried on new tile and crushed) Dangguiwei (Angelica Sinensis Root Tail, wine-washed, medium grade) Honghua (Carthamus Flower, wine-washed, lower grade) Sumu (Sappan Wood, lower grade) Tianhuafen (Trichosanthes Root) [medium grade]

Add one zhong of water and one zhong of good wine, decoct until one zhong remains, strain, and take warm slowly. For ruptured sores, apply Yuanwu Gao (Black Tortoise Ointment). If surrounding redness and swelling persist, apply the previous medicine externally and simultaneously take Lafan Wan (Beeswax and Alum Pill), which is best.
Dizziness and Confusion
After Shaoyang sweating resolves, if the patient gradually feels dizzy and unconscious, as if possessed, or speaks incorrectly and groans, this is due to incomplete sweating and pathogenic heat lurking in the Xinbao (Pericardium). The *Liuren Shu* uses Zhima Tang (Anemarrhena and Ephedra Decoction) to induce sweating, but considering the post-illness deficiency of Blood and Qi, sweating is contraindicated. If the pulse is weak and the person is deficient, only Shiwei Wendan Tang (Ten-Ingredient Warm the Gallbladder Decoction) added with Huanglian is appropriate. If there is alternating chills and fever, or afternoon tidal fever, Xiao Chaihu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) modified according to symptoms is appropriate.
