The Treatise on Baihe Disease states: Baihe disease (Lily Disease) refers to a condition where there is no specific meridian pathology, but since all vessels converge to the heart (the heart governs the blood vessels), dysfunction of heart qi leads to symptoms affecting the entire body. The patient often remains silent, desires to eat but cannot, desires to sleep but cannot, and desires to walk but cannot. At times, they smell food odors; at other times, they feel cold when not actually cold, or feel hot when not actually hot. There is bitterness in the mouth, dark urine, and various medications fail to cure it. After taking medicine, the condition worsens with vomiting and diarrhea, as if possessed by spirits. Although the physical appearance seems normal, the pulse is fine and rapid. If headache occurs during urination, recovery takes sixty days; if there is no headache during urination but rather a shivering sensation, recovery takes forty days; if urination feels comfortable but accompanied by dizziness, recovery takes twenty days. Symptoms may appear before the onset of illness, four or five days after onset, twenty days after onset, or even a month later with mild manifestations. Treatment should follow the specific syndrome (Huoren Shu states: This disease is named "Baihe Shanghan" (Lily Cold Damage), often occurring after Shanghan, consumptive fever, or major illnesses where the body has not fully recovered, transforming into a peculiar disease).
After sweating therapy for Baihe disease, Baihe Zhi Mu Tang (Lily and Anemarrhena Decoction) is indicated.
Formula of Baihe Zhi Mu Tang:
Baihe (Lilii Bulbus, 7 bulbs, split) Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma, 3 liang, sliced) First, wash the Lilii Bulbus and soak it overnight in water until white foam disappears. Discard this water. Then add two cups of well water, decoct to one cup, strain, and discard the dregs. Separately, decoct the Anemarrhenae Rhizoma in two cups of well water to obtain one cup, strain, and discard the dregs. Mix one cup of the Lilii Bulbus juice with one cup of the Anemarrhenae Rhizoma juice, decoct together to obtain one and a half cups, and take warm in two doses.
For Baihe disease following purgation, Huashi Daizhe Tang (Talcum and Hematite Decoction) is indicated.
Formula of Huashi Daizhe Tang:
Baihe (Lilii Bulbus, 10 bulbs, split) Huashi (Talcum, 3 liang, crushed and wrapped in cotton) Daizheshi (Hematitum, size of a bullet, crushed and wrapped in cotton) First, wash the Lilii Bulbus and soak it overnight in water until white foam disappears. Discard this water. Then add two sheng of well water, decoct to obtain one sheng, strain, and discard the dregs. Separately, use two sheng of water to decoct the Talcum and Hematium to obtain one sheng, strain, and discard the dregs. Mix the liquids, decoct together to obtain one and a half sheng, and take warm in two doses.
For Baihe disease following emesis, Baihe Jizi Tang (Lily and Egg Yolk Decoction) is indicated.
Formula of Baihe Jizi Tang:
Baihe (Lilii Bulbus, 7 bulbs, split) Jizi Huang (Yolki Galli Galli, 1 yolk) Wash the Lilii Bulbus and soak it as described previously. Decoct to obtain one sheng, strain, and discard the dregs. Add the Yolki Galli Galli, stir evenly, and decoct again to reduce to five fen. Take orally.
For Baihe disease that has not undergone emesis, purgation, or sweating, and the condition remains unchanged, Baihe Dihuang Tang (Lily and Rehmannia Decoction) is indicated.
Formula of Baihe Dihuang Tang:
Baihe (Lilii Bulbus, 7 bulbs, split) Sheng Dihuangzhi (Jus Radicis Rehmanniae Recens, 1 sheng) Wash the Lilii Bulbus and soak it as described previously. Decoct to obtain one sheng, strain, and discard the dregs. Add the Jus Radicis Rehmanniae Recens, decoct together to obtain one and a half sheng, and take warm in two doses. Stop administration once the medication acts effectively; otherwise, the stool will be black like lacquer.
If Baihe disease persists for a month without resolution and transforms into thirst, Baixie Fang (External Washing Formula with Lily) is the primary treatment.
Usage: Use one sheng of Lilii Bulbus, steep in one dou of water overnight, and use this water to wash the body. After washing, eat boiled noodles without adding Douchi (Fermented Soybeans).
If the thirst from Baihe disease does not resolve, Gualou Muli San (Trichosanthes Root and Oyster Shell Powder) is indicated.
Formula of Gualou Muli San:
Gualougen (Radix Trichosanthis) Muli (Concha Ostreae) (Equal parts) Grind into powder. Take one fangcun bi (a square-inch measure) mixed with rice water, three times daily.
Baihe San (Lily Powder): Treats Baihe Shanghan persisting for a month, transforming into a disease resembling thirst.
Baihe (Lilii Bulbus) Gualougen (Radix Trichosanthis) (Each 1 liang) Muli (Concha Ostreae) (Powdered) Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix) (Heart removed, roasted) Zhizi Ren (Semen Gardeniae) (Stir-fried, each 7 qian half) Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (Honey-fried, 0.5 liang) Cut the herbs finely. Take 5 qian per dose, add one cup of water, 1.2 qian of Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens), and 27 pieces of Zhuye (Phyllostachidis Folium). Decoct to six fen. Take warm at any time.
To treat abdominal fullness and pain in Baihe Shanghan, take the above formula: Stir-fry 1 liang of Lilii Bulbus until yellow, grind into fine powder. Take 2 qian per dose with rice water, at any time.
If Baihe disease transforms into fever (or chills and fever alternating), Baihe Huashi San (Lily and Talcum Powder) is indicated.
Formula of Baihe Huashi San:
Baihe (Lilii Bulbus, 1 liang) Huashi (Talcum, 3 liang) Grind into powder. Take one fangcun bi with drink, three times daily. Stop administration once slight diarrhea occurs; the heat will then be eliminated.
When Baihe disease manifests with Yin characteristics, rescue it using Yang methods; when it manifests with Yang characteristics, rescue it using Yin methods. Attacking Yin when Yang signs are present, followed by inducing sweating, is a reversal error. Attacking Yang when Yin signs are present, followed by purgation, is also a reversal error.
